    The Protectors® with Jason Piccolo

The original The Protectors® podcast, established in 2019, is about great conversations with interesting people, from veterans and leaders to athletes, entrepreneurs, and authors.

Hosted by retired federal agent, U.S. Army veteran (OIF 2006), and author Dr. Jason Piccolo, the show explores the paths that shaped each guest and what they’ve learned along the way. Many episodes also go behind the scenes with writers, from debut novelists to New York Times bestsellers, on the stories behind their books.

Honest, curious, and unscripted, these are the kinds of conversations you’ll want to hear all the way through.

    #241 | Knocko Nolan | LAPD | NYPD Aug 08, 2021
    Show notes

Everyday Protector. Knocko Nolan. A snapshot of Knocko’s life on the street with NYPD & LAPD. A look into his everyday gear and the importance of protecting his brain containment module (i.e. his noggin). The goal of the ‘Everyday Protector’ series is to provide a view of those working the streets, protecting their house, responding to emergencies….the everyday protectors amongst us.
This series is a partnership with Hard Head Veterans.
From the HHV Site: Tactical Helmets Are What We Do! Here's the deal, Hard Head Veterans is a veteran-owned and operated small business selling tactical ballistic helmets like MICH helmets to the men and women who need them the most. We are veterans of the United States’ most current conflicts, and many of us continue to serve our country today through a reserve or contracting roles. Every single member of our team is connected to the military or law enforcement, making us uniquely qualified to better understand and serve the needs of our customers.
Our company was founded on the experience that, too often, cost and administrative bureaucracy result in necessary gear not getting into the right hands until it’s too late. As a result, many individuals end up spending thousands of dollars on supplying themselves with equipment that should have been given to them in the first place. We knew that there had to be a better way.

    Show notes

McKenna Geer stopped by The Protectors to talk about her journey to the Paralympic games not only this summer, but Rio 2016. We also talk about what the day in the life of an athlete is like, shooting sports, the incredible accuracy needed to hit the target (like splitting hairs!!), and a ton more.

In 2014, she moved to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

    #237 | Paul Letersky | Author | Former Special Agent Jul 20, 2021
    Show notes

Paul Letersky joined The Protectors to talk about his book THE DIRECTOR: My Years Assisting J. Edgar Hoover. We also go into what a day in the life of J. Edgar Hoover was like.

The Book: Since Hoover’s death half a century ago, millions of words have been written about the man and hundreds of hours of TV dramas. But until now, there has been virtually no account from someone who, for a period of years, spent hours with the Director on a daily basis.

Paul Letersky began working for Director Hoover in 1965 and had a front-row seat to the comings-and-goings of Hoover’s personal office at the height of one of the most turbulent decades since the Civil War. The Director showcases the dedication of history’s longest serving FBI director, including:

    - The animosity felt by Hoover towards Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the comments made by Hoover on first hearing of Dr. King’s shooting from Letersky.

    - A deeply personal look at Hoover’s longtime assistant Helen Gandy, the highest paid woman at the DOJ in the 1970’s and considered to be Hoover’s most trusted confidant.

    - The effectiveness of the FBI’s "COINTELPRO" programs—black bag projects from 1956-1971 aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, sowing discord and discrediting American organizations.

    - How "COINTELPRO" targeted groups as disparate as the Ku Klux Klan and the Black Panther Party, as well as civil rights leaders like Dr. King and influential public anti-war figures like John Lennon.

#235 | Weekly Live | Discussing Simulation Theory | With Special Guests Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Simulation Theory? What the heck is that. Listening to Joe Rogan and Elon Musk talk about it sounds like the theory that we are living in a simulation, has been around a while. We had a fun chat about it. Listen to me, Carla, Austin, and Rob talk about it.

Do you believe in SIMULATION THEORY?

“If you assume any rate of improvement at all, games will eventually be indistinguishable from reality,” Musk said before concluding, “We’re most likely in a simulation.”

    #234 | Marc Cameron | NYT Best-Selling Author | Former U.S. Marshal Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Marc Cameron joined The Protectors to talk about his new book BONE RATTLE, his time as a U.S. Marshal, his time in Alaska, character development, and a ton of other topics.

MARC: A retired Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal, Marc Cameron spent nearly thirty years in law enforcement. His assignments have taken him from Alaska to Manhattan, Canada to Mexico and dozens of points in between. He holds a second degree black belt in Jujitsu and is a certified scuba diver and man-tracker.

BONE RATTLE: In the icy heart of Alaska, a series of gruesome murders leads Deputy US Marshal Arliss Cutter into a firestorm of searing corruption, clashing cultures, and bone-chilling fear…

In Juneau, a young Native archeologist is sent to protect the ancient burial sites uncovered by an Alaskan gold mining company. He never returns. In Anchorage, a female torso—minus head, hands, and feet—is washed ashore near a jogging trail by the airport. It is not the first. At Alaska’s Fugitive Task Force, Arliss Cutter and deputy Lola Teariki are pulled from their duties and sent to a federal court in Juneau. Instead of tracking dangerous fugitives, Cutter and Lola will be keeping track of sequestered jurors in a high-profile trial. The case involves a massive drug conspiracy with ties to a mining company, a lobbyist, and two state senators. When a prosecuting attorney is murdered—and a reporter viciously attacked—Cutter realizes they’re dealing with something much bigger, and darker, than a simple drug trial. The truth lies deep within the ancient sites and precious mines of this isolated land—and inside the cold hearts of those would kill to hide its secrets…

What’s buried in Alaska stays in Alaska.

#232 | Scott Huesing | Discussion of ECHO IN RAMADI | Guest Host Pete Turner Jul 13, 2021
    Show notes

Scott Huesing was live with the Protectors Book Club on July 12th. We discussed Scott's critically acclaimed book ECHO IN RAMADI.

About Scott: Scott A. Huesing is a retired USMC Infantry Major with over 24 years of service, both enlisted and as a commissioned officer. His career spanned 10 deployments and he conducted operations in over 60 countries worldwide. During his numerous deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa he planned, led, and conducted hundreds of combat missions under some of the most austere and challenging conditions.

The Book: From the winter of 2006 through the spring of 2007, two-hundred-fifty Marines from Echo Company, Second Battalion, Fourth Marine Regiment fought daily in the dangerous, dense city streets of Ramadi, Iraq during the Multi-National Forces Surge ordered by President George W. Bush. The Marines' mission: to kill or capture anti-Iraqi forces. Their experience: like being in Hell.

Now Major Scott A. Huesing, the commander who led Echo Company through Ramadi, takes readers back to the streets of Ramadi in a visceral, gripping portrayal of modern urban combat. Bound together by brotherhood, honor, and the horror they faced, Echo's Marines battled day-to-day on the frontline of a totally different kind of war, without rules, built on chaos. In Echo in Ramadi, Huesing brings these resilient, resolute young men to life and shows how the savagery of urban combat left indelible scars on their bodies, psyches, and souls. Like war classics We Were Soldiers, The Yellow Birds, and Generation Kill, Echo in Ramadi is an unforgettable capsule of one company's experience of war that will leave readers stunned.
