The Cost of Suffering From PMDD: A Mother's Story of Her Daughter's Struggle Jun 11, 2024
    Show notes

Wondering what PMDD is after reading the title? You're likely in good company. Although Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) affects between 3 and 4 million women in the US, it is still a relatively unknown disorder that is often misdiagnosed.
To help us understand what PMDD is and how it impacts women and their families, Marybeth Bohn joins Robin for this important episode. Marybeth's daughter, Christina, battled PMDD for more than a decade before Marybeth helped lead doctors to her diagnosis. This episode gives listeners a front-row seat to a young woman's struggle and a mother's worst nightmare.
    Special Guest:
Marybeth Bohn has been advocating for PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) since she lost her daughter, Christina Elizabeth Bohn, to suicide in 2021 due to the disorder. The thought of others suffering as her daughter did for 10 to 15 years before receiving a correct diagnosis motivates Marybeth to keep speaking out. She speaks publicly about PMDD to increase awareness and to reduce the time in getting an accurate diagnosis. She has spoken at the University of Missouri, Postpartum Support International Climb Out of the Darkness Walk, Missouri House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Reform, Women’s Mental Health Conference at Yale, NIH Prevention in Focus Webinar, and many other venues. In 2023, she worked with the Missouri State Legislature to pass a bill for having an annual PMDD Awareness Day on October 2nd, which is Christina’s birthday. Missouri is the first state in the U.S. to officially have a PMDD Awareness Day.

Marybeth serves as vice president of the Board of Directors for the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD) and has actively served as a PMDD Champion. After Christina's death, Marybeth retired from the University of Missouri to focus on increasing awareness of PMDD.

Miscarriages: How To Help Families Navigate Loss Jun 04, 2024
    Show notes

The recent episodes of our podcast have explored challenging themes, and today's topic is no exception. Miscarriages touch the lives of many, whether it's a personal experience or through someone we know. Some mothers might not have been aware they were pregnant when it happened, while others felt an instant bond as soon as they saw the positive result on a pregnancy test. Losing a pregnancy is losing a child.

Discussions about miscarriages are often cloaked in silence and stigma. Offering support can be confusing for loved ones, with a fine line between what to say and what to avoid. In today's episode, we'll provide guidance on how to support mothers, fathers, and families who are going through this experience that is anything but perfect.

Kickoff To Wisdom: Analyzing Harrison Butker's Commencement Address Playbook May 28, 2024
    Show notes

A lot has been said about a certain commencement speech…like, a lot a lot. In fact, so much has been said about the content and controversy the speech invoked, we decided to take a more elementary approach and consider what makes a successful commencement address.

Using our backgrounds as former college instructors, we apply a robust framework of ten suggestions to evaluate his speech. Our analysis aims to provide a thoughtful perspective on how commencement addresses can resonate with graduates and leave a lasting impression.
Shifting gears, we tackle the broader challenges and implications of graduation speeches, especially when they touch on sensitive topics like COVID-19 and gender roles. We reflect on Butker's comments about womanhood and individual choice, as well as the societal ramifications of his speech. Wrapping up, we ponder the role of free speech and the courage to express one's convictions, even in the face of potential backlash.
Our approach is not intended to offend, mock, or minimize. Neither do we intend to dissect motive or message. After all, our podcast is founded on the premise that there is a problem with seeking perfection. Thus, we will stay in our lane and give grace to all. We invite our listeners to engage with us, share their thoughts, and help shape future discussions.
Special thanks to our editor, Jordan Overkamp, for his stellar work in making this podcast shine.

Navigating Grief and the Inevitability of Death Apr 23, 2024
    Show notes

In this week's installment of What To Know Before You Go, we explore the complexity of grief. Grief is a universal and intrinsic aspect of what it means to be human. Each experience of grief is deeply individual and intricately linked to the nature of the loss.
Some individuals struggle with Anticipatory Grief, a profound sadness that precedes the death of a loved one suffering from a terminal condition. Chronic Sorrow is another facet of grief, often described as 'a normal reaction to an abnormal situation,' the response to an ongoing loss when an illness or disability is permanent and life-altering. When loss strikes suddenly and intensely, such as in the case of an unforeseen accident or suicide, one may endure Complicated Grief, marked by its traumatic impact and challenging road to healing.

As we delve into the various phases and stages of grief, it is crucial to acknowledge the unique nature of each person’s grieving process. There is no singularly correct way to navigate through grief, provided that the responses are not harmful.
Join us in our exploration of the multifaceted nature of grief and share in the coping techniques we offer to manage this profound emotion.

Caring for Caregivers With Lauren Eisleben Apr 09, 2024
    Show notes

Of the many roles women undertake in their lifetime, the act of caregiving stands out as one of the most universal and demanding. The Institute on Aging reports that women make up roughly 75% of caregivers and typically dedicate up to 50% more time to caregiving duties compared to their male counterparts. It appears that being a woman—whether you're a daughter, daughter-in-law, distant relative, or simply a friend—often means taking on the responsibilities of caregiving with family and friends.
Caregiving comes with a host of challenging effects. Absorbing the financial costs associated with caregiving is often problematic. Time away from work for medical appointments, along with the expenses associated with medications, necessary medical equipment, and the hiring of supplementary private care to alleviate the primary caregiver's duties, can be financially overwhelming. Beyond the monetary impacts, caregiving can also lead to severe emotional and physical fatigue. And as the baby boomer population prefers to age in their own homes, the demand for more comprehensive aid and support from caregivers escalates.
Join us as we welcome Lauren Eisleben, Clinical Director at IMF Counseling. Lauren brings her extensive experience as a Licensed Professional Counselor to the “Family and Friends Groups” aimed at supporting caregivers. With her specialized knowledge in aiding those who care for individuals with chronic illnesses, mental health issues, substance use, and eating disorders, Lauren provides invaluable guidance. Her compassionate approach not only recognizes the challenges caregivers face, but she also offers empathetic, constructive advice to caregivers and those who support them.
