Dr. Jason Keune is the executive director of St. Louis University’s Bander Center for Medical Business Ethics, established in 2007 to promote ethical business practices in medicine and healthcare. Dr. Keune is also an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He performs abdominal and gastrointestinal surgeries and conducts research on biomedical ethics, medical business ethics and social justice. He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from Washington University in St. Louis, where he also received a Graduate Certificate in Professional Ethics. Sanmay Das on Algorithms Making Societal Decisions May 18, 2022

Sanmay Das is a professor of Computer Science at George Mason University. From 2013-2020, he was on the faculty of the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis, where he also founded and served as the first chair of the steering committee of the Division of Computational and Data Sciences. Dr. Das received his Ph.D. from MIT and a Bachelor's degree from Harvard, both in Computer Science.
He is chair of the Association for Computing Machinery Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence, a member of the board of directors of the International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems, and serves as an associate editor for the ACM Transactions on Economics and Computation, the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research, and Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems. He has been recognized with awards for research and teaching, including an NSF CAREER Award and the Department Chair Award for Outstanding Teaching at Washington University.

WashU's William Yeoh on Fairness in Ride-Sharing Apps Mar 15, 2022

William Yeoh is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and a co-director of the Division of Computational and Data Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. His research interests are in optimization, heuristic search, and planning under uncertainty, especially in the context of multi-agent systems. He is an NSF CAREER recipient and was named in IEEE's AI's 10-to-Watch list in 2015. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Artificial Intelligence Journal, on the International Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems Board of Directors, and on the Symposium on Combinatorial Search Council. He has served on the committees of numerous AI-related conferences including AAAI, AAMAS, ICAPS, and IJCAI. He was also a conference co-chair of the 2019 Symposium of Combinatorial Search (SoCS 2019) and is a program co-chair of the 2022 International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS 2022).

Geneoscopy's Erica Barnell on AI in Gastrointestinal Health Diagnostics Sep 08, 2021

Erica Barnell is the co-founder and Chief Science Officer at Geneoscopy Inc., a clinical-stage diagnostic company working on early detection of colorectal cancer. Its technology analyzes RNA in stool samples to look for early warning signs of cancer, providing a non-invasive alternative to colonoscopies. Geneoscopy raised a $6.9m Series A in 2019; in 2020, its diagnostic device was awarded Breakthrough Device Designation from the FDA and Erica was listed in Forbes 30 Under 30, and in 2021 a peer-reviewed article with results of company’s mutlifactor RNA-FIT test was published in the journal Clinical and Translational Gastroenterology.

Erica is also an MD/PhD candidate at the Washington University School of Medicine with a PhD in Molecular Genetics and Genomics, where her thesis work was completed in the Griffith Lab at the McDonnell Genome Institute to advance bioinformatic tools in the precision oncology space. WashU's Chief Data Scientist Philip Payne on Covid One Year Later May 25, 2021

Fully and Dave talk national synthetic data repositories and what we've learned after collecting and analyzing a year's worth of Covid-19 data.
Dr. Payne is the Janet and Bernard Becker Professor and Founding Director of the Institute for Informatics at Washington University in St. Louis. He is also the Associate Dean for the Office of Health Information and Data Science and the Chief Data Scientist for Washington University. He holds appointments as a Professor of General Medical Sciences and Computer Science and Engineering in the Schools of Medicine and Engineering and Applied Sciences, respectively. In this capacity, he is responsible for the creation and oversight of comprehensive biomedical informatics and data science research, training, and support programs aligned with the health and life science enterprise spanning Washington University, BJC Healthcare, and a variety of regional partners. Further, he serves as the director of the Biomedical Informatics components/programs that exist under the auspices of both the CTSA-funded Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) and the NCI-funded Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University. He earned both masters and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Informatics at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI), the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and he also holds leadership appointments on numerous national steering, editorial, and advisory committees, including efforts associated with AMIA, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Library of Medicine (NLM), and the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS). Strange Loop Founder Alex Miller on Distributed Systems & Community May 12, 2021

Danforth Plant Science Center Keith Duncan on Standing Inside a Virtual Bell Pepper May 04, 2021

Keith Duncan is a research scientist in Dr. Chris Topp's lab at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, MO. He is also the Director of their X-ray imaging facility, one of only a handful in the world dedicated exclusively to studying plant biology. This facility has two X-ray computed tomography instruments that together can image intact plant structures both above and below the soil line over a wide range of sample sizes, from tiny root nodules up to complete plants one meter tall, visualizing plant cells, organs, tissues, and whole plants. Prior to joining the Danforth Center in 2016, Keith was a research scientist in a microscopy and imaging facility at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE for 25 years, using light, laser, electron, and X-ray microscopes to study agricultural biology.

Together, Jennifer and Jon cofounded SentiAR, a 3D augmented reality platform featuring real-time holographic visualization of the patient’s actual anatomy “floating” over the patient. The visualization is fully controllable “hands-free” by the clinician, providing an ergonomic breakthrough for the treatment and analysis of cardiac arrhythmias within an interventional catheter lab environment.
