The Pre-Game with Jubilee

The pre-game is usually the chillest part of the night. You listen to music, kick back with some drinks, and take a moment to catch up with friends before the loud music at the club makes that impossible. Miami-born, New York-based DJ and producer Jubilee is turning her pre-game into a biweekly podcast, where she plays her favorite new music, hangs out with friends, and asks them to share what they’ve been working on and listening to. Tune in every two weeks for an intimate chat with some of the DJs, producers, music writers, vocalists, rappers, and other club world personalities whose disparate perspectives, cultural backgrounds, and sounds comprise the unique melting pot that is New York’s club scene. The city has a deep history of dance music—these are the people who keep it alive.

On Episode 11 of The Pregame Podcast, Jubilee and her very special guest decided to shake things up. First off, her guest this week isn't a "DJ" in the classic sense, but instead, the beloved UK songwriter Katy B, who was recently living in New York City for a couple of months. In addition to the getting introduced to what was currently popping off in the Big Apple's nightlife scene, Katy B was introduced to another of the city's late-night staples: rats. The rest is history. Following the brief rodent talk, in place of the show's usual guest mix Katy B and Jess go over some of Katy's favorite jams, as well as Jubilee's favorite tracks that Katy B has written over the years. From there the pair talk UK garage, R&B, and how the radio station RinseFM turned the vocalist into one of the UK's most treasured artists. If you haven't ever spent some time with Katy's music, you better do so because she has a new album in the works.

It's pretty much impossible to talk about the Jersey Club scene without mentioning Nadus. The young, yet prolific DJ and producer has been tearing up clubs since he had to sneak into them to get inside. While half of America was fist-pumping to brostep, Nadus was was lighting up Jersey's youth with chopped-up club edits and the dances to go with them. After being recognized by some people outside his hometown, he started traveling, and eventually put out his first proper record NXWXRK on DJ Slow's Pelican Fly imprint. The record's a hybrid of the club scene he came up in and what he took in playing around the world, and the rest is history.

On the next edition of The Pre-game, Jubilee and Nadus sit down and discuss his path towards fame thus far while touching up on some fun memories they share, living stints in Paris, and what's next for him. They also touch on his new label, Thread Imprint, and the artists that will soon be gracing their releases. The Pre-Game Episode Eight: Star Eyes Feb 24, 2017

It's no secret that Vivian Host, a.k.a Star Eyes, has been a huge influence to Jubilee for many years; they even used to be roommates. Star Eyes was once the editor of XLR8R Magazine (as well as former Editor-in-Chief of THUMP) and had originally co-founded NYC's iconic, now sadly defunct, label Trouble and Bass. She's often cited as among the the first to claim "bass music" in the US overall. Back during the time Jubilee started going out in NYC and honing her craft, Star Eyes was also part of a notable DJ duo called Syrup Girls. Eventually, the two became friends, started working, spinning, and eventually touring together.

These days Star Eyes is busy as ever running her own new label and party, Chaos Clan, hosting a show on RBMA Radio, The Vortex, and, as always, crafting bass-heavy club tracks. In addition to two DJ sets from Jubilee and Star Eyes, the longtime pals catch up about life, Star Eyes' new label, and much more.

Jubilee opens with some tracks from After Hours and others that inspired it, and at the end, FaltyDl plays a 30-minute mix consisting almost entirely of his own productions.
