Part three and the conclusion of a multi-part feature segment discussing emergency communications. This episode we talk about go-kits. Special “Thanks” to Paul, KD0GMD who shared with us this Google video titled The Many Hats of Incident Command. This video reminds us that everything we need to know in life, we learned in Kindergarten. We also discuss home preparedness kits. You can learn more about preparing your home preparedness kit and creating a plan from http://ready.gov/. Finally we conclude this segment with a discussion about emergency communications go-kits. Dan O’Connor, KE7HLR of Reno, Nevada created a document discussing his idea for a modular go-kit system. You can view his document here. Dan also has a well designed amateur radio website. Check it out.

Our featured website segment is Flash and Pass. The Flash and Pass system was created by Dick Fults, K6SX and exactly as the name implies, it’s a series of flash cards designed to help you prepare for the US amateur exams. I personally will be using the Flash and Pass system as I prepare to upgrade to the US Extra class license. For more information about the Flash and Pass system, please visit http://www.flashandpass.com/amateurradio/

Podcast Special NY Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club – Podcast ver. Special – December 18 2008 (5.14 MB, runtime 4:29)

    Press Release

    Dear Fellow Amateur,

The Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club- WB2JSM is putting out an SOS ( save our station) call for your help. The Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club has been demonstrating amateur radio to the visiting public for over 35 years as an independent exhibit at the New York Hall of Science Children’s Museum located in Queens, New York . The museum is undergoing a major renovation project and wants us out for good. We have started a petition which we want you to sign and circulate for us in order to help preserve a great ham radio asset by showing officials at the museum that you value what we do. Please visit http://tinyurl.com/6ljost to read more about our plight and sign our petition. We have logged over 10,000 contacts from the station and even if you’re not in our log your help will let us continue to talk up amateur radio and create the next generation of ham radio operators .

    Respectfully Submitted

    Tom Golero KC2CBA

    Club Liaison Officer

    Podcast Number 13 – Podcast ver. 13.1 – December 15 2008 (29.6 MB, runtime 25:55)
As we wrap up 2008, we discuss the QSL process. I provide a brief history on the first known instances of using a QSL card to confirm a contact. I cover from start to finish how one would send a paper QSL card and briefly touch on the electronic QSL process by introducing both www.eqsl.cc and www.arrl.org/lotw.

I introduce you to Randy Dorman, KB3IFH and his QSL card printing service. Randy assisted me in the design of my new QSL card. If you’re in the market for new cards or need to design your first card, please contact Randy. Randy’s website is www.kb3ifh.homestead.com.

It’s been a while since I featured an amateur’s website and I can’t think of no one better to share with you than Santa’s….huh, I mean Mickey Hicks wo6t. Mickey operates special event station w6s this time of year. I would encourage you to visit Santa’s website to research his on-air schedule and perhaps you can allow your child or grandchild the opportunity to talk to Santa on ham radio.

Finally, I’m branching out my podcasting hobby and have produced another two podcasts which are scheduled to be released on a monthly basis. They are The Practical Computer Podcast and The Practical Technology Podcast. You can download these through iTunes or from their internet home by visiting www.practicalpodcaster.com. Just follow the links on the left side.

As always, thank you for listening and thank you for telling your friends.
