    Show notes

In the final episode of the 2021 Tour (a.k.a. Season 1), we sit down with Brendan Scholz, the lead singer of Mercy Music, to talk about them playing shows again and in support of big name punk bands like Lagwagon and MxPx. We also talk about the Las Vegas music scene and how it has managed to survive without a true core to it. Brendan also talks about his journey from being signed to a major label early in his career, and having it all unravel before the album was ever released.

This is one of the most honest conversations from a long-time musician you may ever hear, and if you haven't checked out Mercy Music's songs yet, check them in the links below, because they are pretty damn awesome!

Ep. 13 - An Inspirational Rock Journey with Eric Howk of Portugal. The Man Dec 16, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, I have a great conversation with the lead guitarist of one of my favorite bands of all time, Eric Howk from Portugal. The Man. We talk about everything from his crazy journey to joining the band to how he had to leave his car in Vegas for 3 months to continue a tour with the band. We also talk about the upcoming tour with Alt-J in early 2022 and the new album that should be released in 2022 as well! This guy is a seriously hard working, incredibly talented guitarist with some great insights and stories. To hear how 3 guys from a small town in Alaska came to be one of the best rock bands in the world is an awesome tale, and Eric tells it well. If you are a fan of Portugal. Ep. 9 - Talking with The Punk Rock Veterans Behind The Best New Band of 2021 URETHANE Nov 11, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, I have the privilege of speaking with the band URETHANE about how the four punk rock veterans (Tim Fennelly, Steve Caballero, Chad Ruiz and Dylan Wade) came together bonded over coffee, ramen and Steve's own juice to create the best new band of 2021. We talk about their new album Chasing Horizons, their music, the videos, but also a lot of great conversation about punk music in general, and I had to come clean about my hesitancy to listen to their band as I thought Steve might be using the name to pump the band up without merit. Boy, what a shmuck I am. The music speaks for itself and rocks as hard as any punk album that has come out in the last decade. Ep. 8 - Rock Talk - The 90s Punk Genre and Playing in a Pop Punk Band with Justin Jahr of Five Star Nov 04, 2021
    Show notes

I bring on a former bandmate and long time friend, Justin Jahr, who happens to also be one of the biggest punk rock fans that I know to talk about the history of punk music from our perspectives growing up in podunk North Dakota, and how the music shaped our lives and musical direction of our band in high school, Five Star. Justin brings a fresh perspective that is purely from the perspective of a punk rock fan. So, just like you, he is along for the sheer enjoyment of talking punk music and reflecting on the nostalgia of the 90's punk explosion, the rise of Blink-182 and those awesome punk compilations albums that got us into bands we never heard of up to that point. Are you a fan of punk music? Then you will definitely want to listen to this episode. Ep. 6 - Talking Aussie Punk Rock and the Evolution of Their Music with Jake Laderman of Clowns Oct 20, 2021
    Show notes

In this episode, I get the chance to talk with drummer Jake Laderman (@catman.scoop on IG) of the fast rising Aussie punk band, Clowns. This is absolutely one of the most interesting, deep-deep dive music conversations I have probably ever had. We talk about everything from classic punk bands to The Yardbirds to some of the best drummers of past and present as well as what it's like to have a voice in a punk band and what it means to stand behind your music. This conversation will absolutely capture your attention, and it is definitely a must-listen episode! **Correction from the Podcast: I mention 2 members of the Foo Fighters having been from the band Sunny Day Real Estate. The only active member of the Foo Fighters from Sunny Day Real Estate is Nate Mendel (bass). However, drummer William Goldsmith DID have a brief stint with the Foo at the early outset of the band's formation. He is no longer part of the band though. Ep. 5 - In Depth on New EP Saintly Patients & Being an Indie Rocker Dad with Mitch Purvis of Commoneer Oct 14, 2021
    Show notes

In today's episode, I get to speak with a longtime friend and amazing guitarist, Mitch Purvis of Commoneer. He has a brand new EP coming out called Saintly Patients, and I highly recommend you check it out. Mitch and I talk about what home recording is like, what it's like to be a parent and active musician and how insane you can make yourself if you spend too much time trying to perfect everything in your music. We even talk about how the bass guitar is an important element in the overall music of ANY band, but specifically in the recordings of Commoneer and how Mitch came to love the bass with a newfound respect for the 4-stringed instrument. This is an episode you are truly going to enjoy if you are a musician or have done any recording or producing, for sure!
