    The Polyester Podcast

Is Blake Lively a bitch or being misconstrued? Will Elon ever stop cringing us out? And why is everyone using slurs again?

Every week Polyester’s head girlies Ione Gamble and Gina Tonic take you down a weekly rabbit hole of online discourse and pop culture – from trad wives and surrogacy to porn stars and unhinged press tours. Exploring the intersection of IRL and URL through a feminist lens, the Polyester Podcast is your weekly digest on absolutely everything everyone on the internet is talking about.

With guests like Tavi Gevinson and Sofia Coppola collaborator Stacey Battat, and special episodes beamed into your ears from cultural centres like London’s Tate Modern and Barbican Centre, every Monday we offer a down-to-earth take from the front lines of the internet, feminism, and the weird world of celebrity it has spawned.

Hosted by Editor in Chief Ione Gamble with Senior Editor Gina Tonic. Edited by Olivia Graham. Have faith in your own bad taste!

The Sleepover Club: Everything Gen Z Gets Wrong About Indie Sleaze Jan 17, 2022
    Show notes

Haven't you heard? Indie Sleaze is back! Dig out the coloured tights, find your old American Apparel hoodies and dust off your old copies of NME. This week we're joined by Polyester socials editor Eden Young, as her and Ione describe what Indie Sleaze was really like to someone who was never there: Halima, aka our resident Gen Z.

What is the difference between Twee, Indie Sleaze, Nu Rave, and the 2014 Tumblr Girl? And why is TikTok lumping them all together when discussing the current cultural resurgence? With guest statements from none other than the Indie Sleaze instagram account itself, Ione and Eden remember what made the era great; and try to convince Halima to embrace its newest incarnation.

The Sleepover Club: We Need To Stop Normalising Things Jan 10, 2022
    Show notes

Twitter is obsessed with normalising things. From the benign, such as normalising going to the cinema alone, to the vaguely political such as normalise body hair, right up to the extremes of social justice; if there's an issue, we want to normalise it. But does condensing our problems into this meme-esque format really do anything to push things forward? Or when we plea to the internet for a normalisation, are we really just trying to signal how tuned we are to the issues that matter?

This week Ione and Halima how the trend of normalising things is really just feeding into our obsession with individualism and actually breaking down any hopes we have of collective liberation.

The Sleepover Club: The Yassification Of The Internet Dec 13, 2021
    Show notes

Over the past few weeks, the internet has been overrun with yassified edits of our faves. Perhaps you've seen Toni Collette with smoothed out skin, Fiona from Shrek sporting a gorgeous smokey eye, or the 'oi mista, you me dad?' doll looking like she's about to head out for a night at Vodka Revs. But while we all become obsessed with yassifying our faves, Ione and Halima are going deep on what the meme really means, and how beauty standards have changed throughout the course of the internet.

Most of us feel like beauty standards are being broken down, if not obliterated altogether. But from Instagram face, to FaceTune Pro, we're still trapped searching for the best version of ourselves and buying into whichever editing app can get us there the quickest. Is the Yassification meme the only thing that can save us from airbrushed hell?

Obsessions: Shona McAndrew On Why She Loves TikTok Jun 07, 2021
    Show notes

For our last episode before the summer break, we sit down with one of our FAVOURITE artists, Shona McAndrew. Shona is sharing her love for TikTok; from dueting, to the political content on the app, the obscure trends it leads us too and why TikTok is arguably a more productive place than any other social media platform. But for all the joy the app brings; TikTok isn't without it problems — from censorship, to fatphobia and more. Ione, Gina, and Shona discuss how to navigate social media as an artist looking to find connection.

Every so often we'll be picking the brain of a different creative about something they admire that has nothing to do with how they generate their income.

Obsessions: Grace Miceli On The Unexpected Joy Of Going Grey May 23, 2021
    Show notes

Are you dreading the day you find your first grey hair? Or maybe you've already spent hours in front of the bathroom mirror, pulling single silver strands from your head? This week, we're joined by illustrator Grace Miceli. The long-time contributor to Polyester and author of How to Deal is telling us all about how she shifted her attitude towards growing older.

With the past twelve months meaning all of our beauty regimes have shifted, Grace decided it was time to stop living in denial about the fact her hair was silvering; and began to embrace all the great things entering your 30's throws at you. From reassessing her place in the art world, to feeling more comfortable in herself as a whole, Ione, Olivia and Grace discuss why growing up is no bad thing.

The Sleepover Club: Daniel Howell On The Changing Online World May 16, 2021
    Show notes

This week on The Sleepover Club, we sat down with Daniel Howell to discuss how the internet has changed, for better and for worse, throughout his career. The author, presenter, and YouTuber tells us how he developed boundaries when it comes to sharing online, why his inner cynic always wins out in the end, and how growing up in online spaces effected his sense of self. We'll also be chatting about Daniel's progression from Youtube to publishing, and why he's putting mental health at the front of centre of his work.

Are we getting better or worse at holding people accountable online? And do we tend to be too harsh on people that over-share on the internet? Ione, Olivia, and Daniel will be discussing all this and much more.
