The Death of Roe Dec 07, 2021

Show notes

The court that Trump built seems poised to set women’s rights back a century with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. We talk about the history of a woman’s right to choose, the fundamental dishonesty of the pro-life movement, the myth that the religious right has always been anti-abortion, and the threat this decision will have, not only on women’s rights, but on the legitimacy of the Supreme Court itself.

Don’t Try to Out-Fascist the Fascists Nov 30, 2021

Show notes

It is a frustrating time. Most of us are losing our minds with the lack of accountability for Trump & Co. We’re mad at the Democrats for not moving faster and doing more. We’re mad at the DOJ for seemingly doing nothing. We’re mad that it feels like we’re the only ones calling for justice and we want results like, yesterday. But, as Teri Kanefield says, “It’s important we don’t fight autocracy with autocracy” because “if we fight like them, we will end up like them” and then our democracy will be well and truly gone. People need to channel their anxiety into productive action. At the end of the day, there is no magic bullet. The only way to save democracy is with more democracy. If we want to live in a democratic, rule of law society we must uphold the values of that society even when abandoning them would be so much more efficient.

The Republican Party You Knew Is Gone Nov 23, 2021

Show notes

Enough of the spin, the depressing headlines & the bad poll numbers. By almost every discernible metric, the Democrats are actually doing incredibly well.

We talk about the signed bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, the biggest investment in our country in over 50 years; the Build Back Better Act, that could be the greatest social spending bill in decades; and, we talk in depth about the party that voted AGAINST all of that because they’ve chosen Democratic failure over American success. We question who the Republican Party has become as they’re no longer attempting to govern, but setting up to rule, and based on which voices they’re abandoning and which they’re elevating, it appears the future under the GOP will look a lot more like Hungary than America. If we’re going to be ready to fight for our democracy, we must stop falling for the drama. See the parties through their actions and not the media’s words.

Introduction to Politics Girl: Why you should get in the fight Nov 16, 2021

Show notes

Leigh gives you some background on where she comes from, why she’s doing this, and why she thinks you should care.

We talk about the danger of General Michael Flynn’s public call for one religion in America, churches increasing involvement in politics, and the danger our democracy faces right now. We touch on the Kyle Rittenhouse case and the current lack of accountability for a certain subset of the population and we get really honest about how serious the problems we face are, so we can get ourselves into the right headspace to fight. Unfortunately, we don’t have the luxury of sitting on the sideline for one more day. 2022 will be a tipping point for America, and sometimes it just takes an outsider to come in and remind you what you should be fighting for. I’m glad you’re here. We need you.

The PoliticsGirl Podcast Trailer (Politics Girl) Nov 14, 2021

Show notes

American Democracy is not promised to us and, with all the forces working against it, saving it will take a level of work most people aren’t ready for. The PoliticsGirl Podcast is here to give people a reason to care and a reason to fight. Our goal is to inspire. To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become. You’ll leave more knowledgeable, more engaged, and more sure that you, personally, can make a difference to the future of American democracy. Everyone’s got a little time for that right? Subscribe for new episodes every Tuesday. We’re in a fight for our country. We sure as hell better know what we’re fighting for. xo
