Kings of Columbus: Caleb Downs' magic and his potential place in Ohio State's Heisman history Jun 19, 2024

Show notes

If Caleb Downs does play offense for Ohio State in 2024, how much would that help his Heisman Trophy case? Would he have a real shot at becoming the Buckeyes' first Heisman winner inn 18 years?
On this Kings of Columbus, Doug Lesmerises and Bill Landis use the revelation that Ryan Day dropped on Tuesday -- that sophomore safety Downs could get a few snaps at running back -- to launch into a full OSU Heisman discussion.
• Why haven't the Buckeyes won a Heisman since Troy Smith in 2006 and how does their drought compare historically? The guys look at the 17 Heisman winners since Smith and how many Buckeyes finished in the Top 10 in the voting.
• Can a defensive player really win it? Bill investigates the seven defensive players to finish in the Top 5 of the voting since Charles Woodson won in 1997 and how Downs compares to them.
• What of the could-have-been OSU Heisman cases? Doug checks the preseason Heisman odds on Buckeyes from Beanie Wells to Terrelle Pryor to Braxton Miller to C.J. Stroud as the guys discuss what happened in their Heisman races.
• Finally, it's a list of the 10 best OSU Heisman candidates since 2006 -- from Justin Fields to Chase Young to Ezekiel Elliott -- as Doug and Bill decide how the ultimate Downs season would fit on that list.
This is a major OSU Heisman dive -- and a discussion of the possible Heisman magic around Downs -- so thanks as always for joining Kings of Columbus on The Podcast.
