We live in a world of constant transition. Our modes and models change incessantly. Nowhere is that so true as in the entertainment industry. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able, at once, to reach back into the good ol’ days while still keeping pace with the new entertainers? The Atlas of those conjoined entertainment worlds, without a doubt, would be Joe Franklin. The first man to bring the talk show format to television, Mr. Franklin pioneered facets of television that are wholly taken for granted these days. With an incredible list of classic stars and new names fresh from the marquise lights, to his talk show credit , we don’t want you to miss a moment of this astounding, fast paced interview. Don’t change that dial…or URL! Introduction by Daniel Buckner

This interview with the late Joe Franklin was originally broadcast on the radio and is now presented right here on The Paul Leslie Hour podcast.

    220 - Lookla

Watching television late at night I kept seeing this Jaguar car commercial. Every time I saw it, I found myself fascinated by the mysterious, beautiful song included in it. I was entranced. I used Siri to ask "What song is this?" It turns out the song was called "The King is Dead." I was intrigued.

The song was written, performed and recorded by the independent musical duo Lookla, based in London. Consisting of Nikonn and Chloe Ann who are originally from Greece, their music is enchanting and unique. They agreed to give an interview, the very first in their career! They kindly offered to debut their third single "Now or Never" for the listeners of The Paul Leslie Hour podcast version. Don't turn that dial, Lookla is up next!

    216 - Gap Mangione

Gap Mangione is a jazz pianist, composer, arranger & big band leader Gap Mangione. This telephone interview goes back to the radio days. At that time I was playing the Gap Mangione album called Stolen Moments, a pretty diverse collection of tunes, composed by everyone from Paul Simon to Henry Mancini and of course a couple written by Gap Mangione himself. Gap Mangione, born Gaspare Mangione, comes from an Italian-American family in Rochester, New York. He started playing piano from a very young age. With his brother, the flugelhorn and trumpeter Chuck Mangione, they led the musical group called “The Jazz Brothers.” Gap Mangione has recorded a number of acclaimed recordings starting with his first release Diana in the Autumn Wind in 1968 and most recently, Live in Toronto which features the Gap Mangione Quintet. His music has been sampled by several prominent rappers.

Gap Mangione is right here, on The Paul Leslie Hour. Enjoy!

You want to talk about a versatile songwriter! He's written songs recorded by an incredibly diverse number of artists. Probably one of the most popular songs he wrote was "Living in America" recorded by James Brown. Other artists who've recorded his songs include Cher, Britney Spears, Joe Cocker, Paul Stanley of Kiss, Dan Hartman, Chaka Khan, Katy Perry, Seal, the Doobie Brothers, Hilary Duff, Natalie Imbruglia, Jamey Johnson, Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli, and artists like Billy Joel and Joni Mitchell who rarely record material other than their own. It was a great pleasure to conduct a rare interview with one of music's most legendary songwriters, right here on The Paul Leslie Hour.

    214 - Roger Guth

Good things come to those who wait. That adage could definitely be applied to getting the opportunity to interview the brilliant composer, songwriter and drummer Roger Guth. Well known for drumming with Jimmy Buffett and Peter Mayer for 30 years, Roger Guth is also a solo singer-songwriter and recording artist having released the albums Scotch and Cowboy Ballet. In 2016, he took a different path with his music and composed and recorded Tin Roof, an album of jazz instrumental songs.

Persistence paid off and after many attempts, this interview was recorded at a hotel in Atlanta in the summer of 2016. Thanks is due to Mike Davis and Terry Lederer for endless help. Peter Mayer and Roger Guth were very generous sharing their thoughts and opinions. Roger Guth is up next, right here on The Paul Leslie Hour.
