Dr Lewis Ziska Discusses Pros and Cons of Invasives As Biofuel Mar 18, 2014
    Show notes

As we shift from petroleum-based energy to renewable energy, the production of biofuel, created from invasive species appears to be a viable option. However, certain plant species which have been proposed for biofuel production include invasive species and/or other plants which have the potential to escape cultivation. Is this a good solution for eliminating an environmental issue while satisfying an energy need or is this type of biofuel merely creating a disaster in the making? In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, hosts, June Stoyer and special guest host, Luis Mejia talk to Dr. Lewis Ziska about the pros and cons of using invasive species as biofuel. Dr. Ziska is a Plant Physiologist with the USDA's Agricultural Research Service in Beltsville, Maryland. Dr. Ziska has published numerous papers on carbon dioxide and climate change impacts on agriculture, weed biology and public health. At present he is investigating the role of rising carbon dioxide and changing climate on food security, invasive species and aerobiology. Dr. Ziska's research has appeared in: The Wall Street Journal, National Geographic, The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report and CNN Headline News. He has appeared on the ABC nightly news with Charles Gibson and the NBC nightly news with Brian Williams. He was also featured in the HBO documentary, “Too Hot Not to Handle”. Stay tuned!

LionAid.org: Where Have All The Lions Gone? Mar 06, 2014
    Show notes

Lions are a major trophy for hunters. Despite their well-documented decline, there is still a considerable trophy hunting effort. Since the last-published decline in lion numbers on the continent were made public in 2002-2004, over 4,400 lions have been exported as trophies. As such, trophies are largely male lions. The effect of this commercial activity has greatly impacted both overall lion numbers and the ability for remaining lions to reproduce. Trophy hunting must cease. LionAid.org is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation and preservation of lions. Their mission is to create awareness about the huge decline of the lion population and work with government officials and other organizations to cease the legal hunting of these animals. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will speak to the founder of LionAid.org, Dr. Pieter Kat and to Christine Macsween.
