Eden Foods: Turning Old World Grains Into Modern Pasta Nov 15, 2010
    Show notes

Ask the average person what they know about pasta. A typical response is it's spaghetti, ziti or some commercial Italian dish. In New York and other areas with large Italian communities, pasta is traditionally served on Sunday afternoons when friends gather with the family. Did you know that many fad diets discourage the consumption of pasta? This is because most pasta is made from highly processed flour and contains preservatives that are not very good for you. Many people are also finding that they have a low or zero tolerance of gluten. However, pasta that is made from whole grains IS very good for you! Spelt, Triticum spelta, is a non-hybridized ancient grain and a distant relative of modern wheat. Cultivated over 9,000 years ago in the Fertile Crescent, it was the staple bread wheat of Europe and the Middle East until replaced by modern wheat. The 12th century healer, St. Hildegard von Bingen, said “Spelt is the best of grains. It produces a strong body and healthy blood for those who eat it and it makes the spirit of man light and cheerful.” She believed that it was “the easiest to digest of all grain.” Recent research has found spelt’s highly water soluble gluten is easy to digest and can often be enjoyed by those intolerant to modern hybrid wheat. Eden Foods has turned making pasta into an art. They have not only created a whole line of certified organic and verified non-gmo pastas but have done so using whole grains. Their Kamut pasta is actually made from grain that is known as King Tut’s wheat! Even the boxes are fully compostable! In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, Michael J. Potter, President and Chairman of Eden Foods, Inc.,(http://www.edenfoods.com) will my guest. Is it possible that pasta made from other grains can taste really good? Will it make you fall asleep right after you eat it? Is whole grain better than white wheat pasta? Is there such a thing as low-carb pasta? Stay tuned!

Defenders.org: Resolving The Human Conflict With Wolves Nov 12, 2010
    Show notes

For much of human history wolves have been mythologized, demonized and idolized. Wolves were wiped out from the Western landscape in the early 20th century by settlers who saw them as a threat. Through dedicated conservation efforts, wolves have now been restored to the Northern Rockies and are making a strong comeback. Continued recovery depends on finding ways for wolves and humans to coexist, and a big part of that is working with ranchers to protect their livestock. Defenders has been working hard for nearly 20 years to prevent conflict between wolves and livestock by encouraging the use of nonlethal deterrents. Portable fencing, guard dogs, cowboys and better husbandry techniques have proven successful in reducing livestock losses and creating a better future for wolves. (For more background, please visit http://www.defenders.org/coexistence) In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, wolf advocate and educator, Suzanne Stone, from Defenders.org will discuss wolf compensation and proactive conservation. Suzanne works directly with ranchers and farmers to provide compensation for wolf-related livestock losses and helping livestock owners devise and implement strategies to reduce wolf depredation conflicts. Suzanne is the lead author of Defenders' recent publication Livestock and Wolves: A Guide to Nonlethal Tools and Methods to Reduce Conflict, and she authored a chapter titled Building Tolerance for Wolf Restoration in the Rockies: Compensation and Nonlethal Deterrent Programs in University of Calgary's new publication: The World of Wolves: New Perspectives on Ecology, Behavior and Policy. Suzanne also developed Defenders' Livestock Producers Advisory Council. She currently serves on the Western Wolf Coalition steering committee to help promote wolf conservation within the region. If you want to learn more about these amazing creatures, the crisis they face and how you can get involved, stay tuned!

Resolving Wildlife Conflicts With Joel Thomas Nov 10, 2010
    Show notes

Do you live in a remote area and are finding that there are new creatures in your back yard such as coyotes, bears, and skunks? Or do you live in the suburbs and are constantly chasing squirrels and rabbits out of your garden? Often people will jump and call an exterminator but then find that other critters will soon become a nuisance. Is there a better way? Can we actually co-exist with wildlife and maintain the same lifestyles we are accustomed to? Due to the rapidly decreasing amount of land for wildlife and the increase of land developments, we are forced to deal with more and more conflicts without any real solution. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, author and naturalist, Joel Thomas, will be my guest to talk about his experience dealing with wildlife conflicts and better solutions for co-habitation for a more peaceful planet. He will also discuss his new book, “Creature Comforts-Wildlife Stories and Solutions” which was just recently published and is now available on Amazon.com. If you are dealing with a conflict involving wildlife, tune in to hear Joel’s expert advice. Stay tuned!

    Don't Get Mad...Get Glad Rags! Nov 09, 2010
    Show notes

Women have used menstrual pads in various forms throughout history. Sometimes they were made from natural fibers such as grass, papyrus, sponges or some kind of natural fiber cloth such as cotton or wool. According to The Museum of Menstruation, in the early 19th century, there were two companies that emerged with commercial products. They were the Hartmann company from Germany and Johnson & Johnson, from the U.S.A. Both companies began addressing this important part of a woman’s life and so began this multi-million dollar industry. In the mid-1920’s, the German company Camelia began selling disposable pads. The evolution continued with the introduction of yet another disposable product in 1936 by Tampax. This product was the first tampon with an applicator. Although there were so many options, women began looking for alternatives to disposable products that were not only cost effective but were good for the environment. Sometimes the advancement of technology is not always what people want. At times, people do want to go back to basics without having to go back in time. Women wanted a product that was reusable and not chock-filled with chemicals to absorb their menstrual fluids. This was the vision of Brenda Mallory, Founder and President of Glad Rags, Inc. (http://www.gladrags.com) Glad Rags have become a recognized name in the line of feminine hygiene products all over the world. These washable menstrual cloths are made in the USA, not tested on animals and contain no plastics, perfumes or over-packaging. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, Brenda Mallory, will be my guest to talk about eco-friendly alternatives for women’s feminine hygiene products and how her company has worked hard to educate women about menstruation. Stay tuned!

Most people do not pay much attention to their food labels much less their pet’s food labels. A Bird’s Eye View of Dr Joel Murphy Nov 03, 2010
    Show notes

According to the 2009-2010 National Pet Owners Survey, approximately 62% of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to 71.4 million homes. Of those homes, 15 million of those pets are birds. This year, it has been estimated that $47.7 billion will be spent on our pets in the U.S. That is a lot of money not to mention a lot of animals that need proper care. If you have ever had a bird as a pet there is much to consider before introducing these creatures into your home environment. Birds are intelligent creatures, sensitive to light and finicky eaters. Most of the typical mixes you find in the average pet food section are actually inadequate for their dietary needs. If you are going to purchase a bird from a store, keep in mind that they are extremely stressed in a pet shop environment and really need time to be “themselves”. In this segment of The Organic View, Dr. Joel Murphy will be my guest to talk about his work with birds. Dr. Murphy has written four books on pet care. His latest book,”How To Care For Your Pet Bird: Practical Advice From Dr. Joel Murphy” is one of the best references every person who has a bird companion should have. Dr. Murphy is one of the first veterinarians in the world to become diplomat, American Board of Veterinary Practitioners Certified in Avian Practice. This is the only advanced certification for exotic bird medicine and this level of expertise requires an extremely high level of training and testing. Dr. Joel Murphy has never been satisfied with the status quo and has spent his professional life pushing the envelope in both traditional medicine and surgery and holistic veterinary medicine. He has been pushing the boundary in such diverse subjects such as parrot/pet bird medicine, herbal medicine/ nutraceuticals, homeopathy, flower essences, energy therapy, rainforest research, meditation and nature photography. If you would like to learn more about proper care for your birds, stay tuned!

Milk From China? Coming Soon To A Fridge Near You Nov 02, 2010
    Show notes

Today is election day in the USA. Candidates from all over the country have been duking it out to convince voters that they are worthy of being elected. The general focus of the political rhetoric is consistent nationwide. Promises to cut taxes and create jobs with no explanation much less how to save the existing jobs are left to the voter’s imagination. As for the American Dairy farmer, there is little or no comfort with this election when it comes to their jobs. Big Ag is taking over and wiping out the little farms. It is one big monopoly game and unfortunately, if nothing is done by our elected officials, we will land on Income Tax, no longer have Free Parking, probably take a Chance and then wind up on the Short Line Rail Road only to find out that the luxury tax we are to pay is going to be for imported milk, directly from China! In this segment of The Organic View, John Bunting, American Dairy Farmer, activist and writer for The Milkweed (http://www.themilkweed.com), which is a publication written by and for dairy farmers, will be my guest to talk about the impact this election is going to make on dairy farmers in the USA. Stay tuned!

Hey Wisconsin: You're Not Going To Milk Their Vote! Nov 01, 2010
    Show notes

The gubernatorial election for the state of Wisconsin is one that will significantly impact our food. How? If the newly elected governor does not fight for the American Dairy Farmer, once they are wiped out, the other sectors in agriculture will tumble. Joel Greeno, the President of the American Raw Milk Producers Pricing Association otherwise referred to as ARMPPA and the Vice-President of Family Farm Defenders will be my guest to talk about the key politicians that will impact this industry. With the fiasco that hit the dairy farmers when the current Wisconsin governor vetoed Senate Bill 434 this past May, which would have allowed for direct farmer-to-consumer sales of raw milk, it sent a message that the dairy farmers have very few allies. This election is clearly one that needs to support the dairy farmers but yet neither candidate has reached out to either Joel Greeno or John Kinsman, President of Family Farm Defenders who also blew the whistle on the Bovine Growth Hormone. (rBGH). In fact, very few politicians across the board have mentioned anything about agriculture much less the environment. Just why are dairy farmers being ignored? What exactly is going on in the state of Wisconsin? Why isn’t the environment a concern? Are they pushing for all of our food to be imported? Tune in to hear Joel talk about the crisis with American Dairy Farmers. Stay Tuned!

John Kinsman Talks About The 2010 Election And The Impact on Dairy Farmers Oct 29, 2010
    Show notes

Regardless of what state you live in, each and every race matters. It is of special importance that people pay attention especially when it comes to agriculture. With the fiasco that hit the dairy farmers when the current Wisconsin governor vetoed Senate Bill 434 this past May, which would have allowed for direct farmer-to-consumer sales of raw milk, it sent a message that the dairy farmers have very few allies. In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show, John Kinsman, will be my guest to talk about this critical race and the impact on the American dairy farmer. John Kinsman is President of the Family Farm Defenders (FFD). John is also a life-long dairy farmer from Lime Ridge, Wisconsin. On his farm he raises 36 cows on his 150-acre farm. 80 of those acres are devoted to hay and pasture. The other 70 acres are devoted to woodland management. John is clearly a man who leads by example. Through the FFD, John works to forge new consumer-farmer direct marketing strategies for dairy products. His organization is now marketing Cedar Grove cheese, which carries a label that clearly identifies that the cheese is produced by family farmers and is free of genetically engineered products. John also advocated for efforts to ban use of recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) and educated farmers and consumers about its negative effects. As a result of his efforts, the Food and Drug Administration forestalled the rBGH approval for seven years and bovine growth hormone is now struggling in the marketplace. He has traveled around the world to talk with farmers about the potential dangers of genetic engineering in agriculture and the need to change US dairy policy. Once the big chemical companies destroy the American dairy farmers, it is a matter of time before the rest of our agricultural industries tumble. We are going to be forced to import ALL of our food. This needs to stop. If you want to enjoy locally grown organic good food, stay tuned!
