Resolving The Human Conflict With Wolves Sep 28, 2012
    Show notes

For much of human history wolves have been mythologized, demonized and idolized. Wolves were wiped out from the Western landscape in the early 20th century by settlers who saw them as a threat. Through dedicated conservation efforts, wolves have now been restored to the Northern Rockies and are making a strong comeback. Continued recovery depends on finding ways for wolves and humans to coexist, and a big part of that is working with ranchers to protect their livestock. Defenders has been working hard for nearly 20 years to prevent conflict between wolves and livestock by encouraging the use of nonlethal deterrents. Portable fencing, guard dogs, cowboys and better husbandry techniques have proven successful in reducing livestock losses and creating a better future for wolves. (For more background, please visit defenders.org/coexistence In this segment of The Organic View Radio Show host, June Stoyer talks to wolf advocate and educator, Suzanne Stone, from Defenders.org to discuss wolf compensation and proactive conservation. Suzanne works directly with ranchers and farmers to provide compensation for wolf-related livestock losses and helping livestock owners devise and implement strategies to reduce wolf depredation conflicts. Suzanne is the lead author of Defenders' recent publication Livestock and Wolves: A Guide to Nonlethal Tools and Methods to Reduce Conflict, and she authored a chapter titled Building Tolerance for Wolf Restoration in the Rockies: Compensation and Nonlethal Deterrent Programs in University of Calgary's new publication: The World of Wolves: New Perspectives on Ecology, Behavior and Policy. Suzanne also developed Defenders' Livestock Producers Advisory Council. She currently serves on the Western Wolf Coalition steering committee to help promote wolf conservation within the region. If you want to learn more about these amazing creatures, the crisis they face and how you can get involved, stay tuned!

Clean Energy View: Biodiesel -The Passion, People & Politics Sep 27, 2012
    Show notes

The race is on to find alternative energy solutions which will eliminate our dependency upon fossil fuels. One possibility is biodiesel. Biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease. With the number of new technologies emerging, biodiesel power has become one of the fastest growing industries because it reduces emissions, improves air quality and can be made in your own home! In Lyle Estill’s Biodiesel Power: The Passion, the People, and the Politics of the Next Renewable Fuel, there is a chronicle of this emerging industry. Lightly touching on the technical aspects of the fuel, its qualities and specifications, the book is largely about the people and stories of the biodiesel movement. It explores the tensions between grassroots activists and their altruistic co-ops, the profit minded commercial producers and the voices of agribusiness, and the current administration - or "the coalition of the drilling." Far from a third party account, Biodiesel Power comes from one who has experienced it from the grease dumpster to the boardroom. Lyle Estill has made the journey from back yard brewing, to being part of a producer and distributor cooperative, to commercial production. In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to energy expert, Lyle Estill about biodiesel power. Stay tuned! Energy expert Lyle Estill is the president, co-founder and VP of Stuff at Piedmont Biofuels, and has won numerous awards for his commitment to sustainability, outreach, community development and leadership.

The Neonicotinoid View: Emergence Of Super Weeds & Insects Sep 26, 2012
    Show notes

Agro-chemicals are used to combat a problem with plants and insects that devastate crops. However, there is an emerging resistance of super weeds and now, super insects. More chemicals mean more destruction but what exactly are the alternatives? Could this also be a push for a new breed of agro-technology? In this special series called “The Neonicotinoid View”, hosts, June Stoyer and Tom Theobald will talk to Dr. Charles Benbrook, about the emerging resistance to agro-chemicals to plant and insect pests to agro-products containing the glyphosate and systemic pesticides. Dr. Charles Benbrook worked in Washington, D.C. on agricultural policy, science and regulatory issues from 1979 through 1997. He served for 1.5 years as the agricultural staff expert on the Council for Environmental Quality at the end of the Carter Administration. Following the election of Ronald Reagan, he moved to Capitol Hill in early 1981 and was the Executive Director of the Subcommittee of the House Committee on Agriculture with jurisdiction over pesticide regulation, research, trade and foreign agricultural issues. In 1984 Benbrook was recruited to the job of Executive Director, Board on Agriculture of the National Academy of Sciences, a position he held for seven years. Several influential NAS reports were done in this period on the need for and aspects of sustainable agriculture. In late 1990 he formed Benbrook Consulting Services. Chuck has written many reports, books, and peer reviewed articles on agricultural science, technology, public health, and environmental issues. Stay tuned!

Clean transportation enthusiast, Ben Nelson has developed a “Do It Yourself” series to teach people with minimal skills how to build their own electric car. Clean Energy View: F William Engdahl -Myths, Lies & Oil Wars Sep 20, 2012
    Show notes

The myth of oil scarcity is one of the foundations that have allowed four giant oil corporations along with a handful of Wall Street banks to control the worlds largest and most essential commodity: oil. The myth originated in the 1950s from a speech by a geologist at Shell and was revived in 2003 at the time of the US bombing of Iraq. The reality is quite different from the claims of Peak Oil. In reality, the world is running into oil and not running out of oil. Huge new oil and gas fields are being discovered from the eastern Mediterranean to the coast of Brazil, from East Africa to Iran and Iraq, from Norway to the Caribbean. In F. William Engdahl’s newest book, "Myths, Lies and Oil Wars” discusses the little-known details of wars and manipulations designed over the past half century or more up to the wars in Africa, the Arab Spring, Iraq, all to maintain a lock-grip control of the worlds known oilfields. The myth of scarcity has been a pillar of their power and as a result, propaganda for their self-serving agendas. Tune in to this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, as host, June Stoyer is joined by special guest F. William Engdahl.

Clean Energy View: "Wild Design" The Ethos of Sustainability Sep 18, 2012
    Show notes

In Wild Design, environmental designer and scientist Alan Marshall presents a manifesto on nature-inspired designs, including visionary concepts as well as exhibits of actual products, landscapes, and artwork from around the world. With elegant photographs and drawings, the book incorporates the ethos of sustainability by documenting many of the results of the Ecomimicry Project, an international experiment in eco-design that marries the skills of local artists and ecologists from Western Australia and the Carpathian mountains in Eastern Europe. All of the designs treat nature as an inspiration for eco-friendly innovations. Among the fascinating possibilities: a bike helmet based on the crustacean exoskeleton, a heliotropic house, and a car fueled by algae. Marshall argues that design should be the responsibility of all, not just a technological elite, and it is in this spirit that he offers this timely, important book. In this segment of The Clean Energy View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer talks to designer and scientist, Dr. Alan Marshall about his best-selling book. Stay tuned!
