Recounting the Anthrax Attacks: Terror, the Amerithrax Task Force, and the Evolution of Forensics in the FBI
It was September 18, 2001, just seven days after al-Qaeda hijackers destroyed the Twin Towers. In the early morning darkness, a lone figure dropped several letters into a mailbox. Seventeen days later a Florida journalist died of inhalational anthrax. The death from the rare disease made world news. These anthrax attacks marked the first time a sophisticated biological weapon was released in the United States. It killed five people, disfigured at least 18 more, and launched the largest investigation in the FBI’s history.
Recounting the Anthrax Attacks explores the origins of the innovative forensics used in this case, while also explaining their historical context. R. Scott Decker’s team pursued its first suspect with dogged determination before realizing that the evidence did not add up. With renewed energy, they turned to non-traditional forensics—scientific initiatives never before applied to an investigation—as they continued to hunt for clues. These advances formed the new science of microbial forensics, a novel discipline that produced critical leads when traditional methods failed. The new technologies helped identify a second suspect—one who possessed the knowledge and skills to unleash a living weapon of mass destruction.
Decker provides the first inside look at how the investigation was conducted, highlighting dramatic turning points as the case progressed until its final solution. Join FBI agents as they race against terror and the ultimate insider threat—a decorated government scientist releasing powders of deadly anthrax. Walk in the steps of these dedicated officers while they pursue numerous forensic leads before more letters can be sent until finally they confront a psychotic killer.

Graeme MacQueen :The 2001 Anthrax Deception: The Case for a Domestic Conspiracy Jul 27, 2023
    Show notes

The anthrax letter attacks occurred from September through November of 2001, killing five and wounding many. The attacks were widely held to be the work of Muslims and were used to support the invasion of Afghanistan and, later, the invasion of Iraq. They were used explicitly and repeatedly to justify the passing of the Patriot Act. They were also meant to support withdrawal from the Antiballistic Missile Treaty, a withdrawal eagerly sought by the neoconservatives associated with the Project for a New American Century who wished to pursue their global agenda without obstruction from small states with WMD. In the early days of the attacks there were several perpetrator hypotheses in play. One that gained prominence was the Double Perpetrator hypothesis according to which Iraq had supplied the sophisticated anthrax spores while al-Qaeda had supplied the foot soldiers responsible for preparing and sending the letters. This hypothesis was eagerly reported by the mainstream media. It came to grief quickly when scientists discovered that the anthrax spores had a domestic source and appeared to come from the heart of the US military and intelligence communities.
The FBI rapidly began a search for "the anthrax killer," promoting the idea that there was a lone wolf perpetrator within the military community--a renegade, an unbalanced person whose behavior revealed nothing of significance about structures and institutions of the deep state. In 2008 the Bureau named Dr. Bruce Ivins of the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases as the "anthrax killer." Ivins had conveniently died a week before being named and could not fight back in court. Ivins remains the FBI's choice to this day: the case was closed in 2010. This book support with a great deal of evidence the following four assertions: (a) the anthrax letter attacks were carried out by a group of perpetrators, not by a “lone wolf;” (b) the group that perpetrated this crime was composed, in whole or in part, of deep insiders within the U.S. state apparatus; (c) these insiders were connected to the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks; (d) the anthrax attacks were meant to play an important role in the strategy of redefinition through which the Cold War was replaced by a new global conflict framework, the Global War on Terror.

Randy B. Fowler - Kevin Spacey
Ed is joined by Randy Fowler, who talks of his own traumatic childhood and his knowledge of the background to the allegations surrounding his brother, Kevin Spacey.
For the last seven years or so, Kevin Spacey has faced a string of allegations, accusations and charges from various young men alleging everything from sexual assault to non-consensual sex. Spacey has denied and indeed been cleared in the subsequent legal cases.
So how did he get here? Randy tells the story of a harrowing childhood he and his brother endured; of the violence and the abuse they suffered, and how each man is, in their own way, trying to deal with their personal pain. Which one is most successful with that, is probably pretty obvious.

Revolution's End - The Patty Hearst Kidnapping, Mind Control, and the Secret History of Donald DeFreeze and the SLA Jul 25, 2023

Brad Schreiber - Revolution's End - The Patty Hearst Kidnapping, Mind Control, and the Secret History of Donald DeFreeze and the SLA
Ed was joined by Brad Shrieber to talk about Mind Control and the intricacies of the Patty Hearst saga.
    From Goodreads.
Revolution’s End fully explains the most famous kidnapping in US history, detailing Patty Hearst’s relationship with Donald DeFreeze, known as Cinque, head of the Symbionese Liberation Army. Not only did the heiress have a sexual relationship with DeFreeze while he was imprisoned; she didn’t know he was an informant and a victim of prison behavior modification.
Neither Hearst nor the white radicals who followed DeFreeze realized that he was molded by a CIA officer and allowed to escape, thanks to collusion with the California Department of Corrections. DeFreeze’s secret mission: infiltrate and discredit Bay Area anti-war radicals and the Black Panther Party, the nexus of seventies activism. When the murder of the first black Oakland schools superintendent failed to create an insurrection, DeFreeze was alienated from his controllers and decided to become a revolutionary, since his life was in jeopardy.
Revolution’s End finally elucidates the complex relationship of Hearst and DeFreeze and proves that one of the largest shootouts in US history, which killed six members of the SLA in South Central Los Angeles, ended when the LAPD set fire to the house and incinerated those six radicals on live television, nationwide, as a warning to American leftists.

Rod Harrel - John Lennon Assassination Jul 24, 2023
    Show notes

Rod Harrel - John Lennon Assassination
On the night of December 8th, 1980, the world rocked to a death which was cruel and remains unbelievable. Mark David Chapman walked up to arguably one of the most influential figures in the world, alone, and shot John Lennon. Chapman then, having emptied his gun, stood reading 'Catcher in the Rye' until the Police arrived.
At least that is what has been documented as 'fact'. But closer examination of Chapman, the circumstances of the killing both leading up to and immediately following have grown ever more murky; the passing of time has allowed the furore to calm down and a measured look at the story has allowed a certain amount of cynicism to the alleged facts of the case.
How did Chapman have so much money? How was there too many bullet holes for the gun he possessed (considering he never reloaded) and who benefited from Lennon's death?
So has Rod Harrel hit upon something? He tells Ed Opperman about his research, which he backs up. Why will people not talk? Who else was at the crime scene? Who the Doctor who treated Lennon in the emergency room? And why did Ono have Lennon alter his will and suspend his bodyguards prior to the killing?
His documentary and social media accounts appear at time of writing to be suspended and/or deleted.

The Alter Boys Jul 24, 2023

Suzanne Smith - The Alter Boys
Suzanne Smith joins Ed Opperman to discuss her disturbing non-fiction work The Alter Boys
Glen Walsh and Steven Alward were childhood friends in their tight-knit working-class community in Newcastle, NSW. Both proud altar boys at the local Catholic church, they went on to attend the city's Catholic boys' high schools: Glen to Marist Brothers, Hamilton, and Steven to St Pius X. Both did well: Steven became a journalist; Glen a priest.
But their lives came to be burdened by secrets kept and exposed. Glen discovered that another priest was sexually abusing boys and reported the offender to police, breaking his vows to the Catholic 'brotherhood' in the process. His decision to give evidence regarding the cover-up of clerical abuse at a landmark trial ended in tragedy. Meanwhile, Steven was fighting his own battle to overcome a traumatic past, a battle that also ended in tragedy.
Ensuing investigations revealed that at least 60 men in the region had taken their own lives. What had happened, and why were so many of those men from the three Catholic high schools in the area?
By six-time Walkley Award-winning investigative reporter Suzanne Smith and shortlisted for the 2020 Walkley Book Award, The Altar Boys is the explosive expose of widespread and organised clerical abuse of children in one Australian city, and how the cover-up in the Catholic Church in Australia extended from parish priests to every echelon of the organisation. Focusing on two childhood friends, their families and community, this gripping story is backed by secret documents, diary notes and witness accounts, and details a deliberate church strategy of using psychological warfare against witnesses in key trials involving paedophile priests.
