Mystery, Millions & Murder in North Jersey: The Tragic Kidnapping of Exxon’s Sidney Reso Oct 02, 2023
    Show notes

Author John E. O'Rourke recounts the crime that rocked a sleepy community and brought the nation's eyes to North Jersey.
On a spring morning in Morristown in 1992, authorities discovered a car idling in a driveway with the door open and the driver missing. After they learned the driver was Sidney Reso, the president of Exxon International, the FBI joined the investigation. Over the next two months, law enforcement received cryptic communications that led to a cat-and-mouse chase for those responsible. Retired cop Arthur Seale and his wife, Irene, demanded one of the largest ransoms in U.S. history, and authorities struggled to solve the case.

Operation Jacknap: A True Story of Kidnapping, Extortion, Ransom, and Rescue Oct 02, 2023
    Show notes

The incredible true story of one of America’s largest ransom cases—and the massive FBI and police manhunt to bring the radical captors to justice.
The New York Times described what happened to New York businessman Jack Teich as a “front page horror.”
Two hundred FBI agents and Nassau County police officers combined forces to form a dragnet, hunt for his kidnappers, and rescue him.
Teich lay handcuffed and chained to the walls of a closet in the Bronx with a medical bandage wrapped around his head to cover his eyes. His captors demanded that his wife, Janet, drop a bag with $750,000 (the equivalent of four million dollars in today’s currency) in a locker at Penn Station, making the Jack Teich ransom one of the highest in U.S. history at the time.
FBI and Nassau County police detectives spent over a year before finally uncovering the meticulously planned kidnapping ploy hatched by radical mastermind Richard Warren Williams. The FBI internally dubbed the Jack Teich kidnapping operation “Jacknap.”
The real-life crime drama that followed proved stranger than fiction, involving a tense across-the-country manhunt, a trailer in California stuffed with tens of thousands of ransom dollars hidden inside, a contentious jury trial that dominated NYC headlines for months; a guilty verdict that was overturned twenty-one years later on a controversial technicality; a retrial stymied by a mysterious fire that incinerated court records; and a civil verdict ruling that the kidnapper pay Jack Teich back the ransom money, plus interest.
Operation Jacknap tells the incredible true crime story that continues even now. Indeed, as of this writing, no one knows where the majority of the ransom money is located.
Inside, Teich also details his offer of a reward to anyone helping track down the still missing money and kidnappers.

Anthony Sperl: Roy Radin hitman Bill Mentzer Oct 01, 2023
    Show notes

Anthony Sperl discusses convicted Roy Radin hitman Bill Mentzer
Anthony Sperl has done almost every job. Doorman, bodyguard, PI, researcher.
He joins Ed Opperman to discuss the seamier side of his career, from coke filled celebrity parties to undercover work to dealing with some of the most notorious drug cartels and suppliers of recent years.
He talks at length about alleged Son of Sam conspirator, Roy Radin. Radin was a wealthy producer and show business promoter of vaudeville shows and oldies music tours throughout the 70s and 80s. He was born in 1950 to parents Al and Renee—a show promoter and showgirl, respectively. After his parents divorced when Radin was a teen, he and his mother briefly moved to Long Island, NY, then later, Radin moved to Florida with his father. Radin dropped out of high school to venture into show business and was very successful. By the time he was in his 20s, he had become a millionaire.
He also discusses his association with Bill Mentzer, who was jailed for murder of impresario Roy Radin, who was suspected of being the head of the Son of Sam cult. Mentzer was an associate of Charles Manson and also implicated in the killing of Arliss Perry, a devout Christian slain in North Dakota.
    Recorded 2016 or thereabouts.
NOTE: I have made every attempt to clean up this audio, and though in places it is not as easy to understand as it should be, it's nothing to what is was before I got my hands on it.

He has shared in two of Newsday's Pulitzer Prizes for Local Reporting and has won numerous other journalism awards. Shirer and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich. He lives on eastern Long Island.
Steve Wick author Bad Company: Drugs, Hollywood and the Cotton Club Murder
In 1983, Roy Radin, would-be impresario, joined forces with fading movie producer Robert Evans and Elaine "Laney" Jacobs, a woman with the burning ambition to use the millions she had made by drug dealing to buy her way into the movie industry. Together they planned to finance the movie Cotton Club. When Radin's body was found miles away from Los Angeles, the police had few clues and eventually had to put the investigation on hold. At the request of Radin's mother, New York Newsday's Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Steve Wick, began looking into Radin's last weeks and soon unearthed the sordid connection between deal making and drug dealing that set all Hollywood on its ear. Bad Company is both a fascinating and strangely repellent look at the darker side of the entertainment industry, as well as a striking portrait of the people who control the drug culture in this country

My Disturbing Michael Jackson Experience - James Hudnall Sep 30, 2023
    Show notes

I met Michael Jackson just once back in 1993. It was only months before he was first accused of sexually molesting then 13-year-old Jordy Chandler. Like a lot of people before that scandal, I was an admirer of his music. I grew up listening to the Jackson Five and later Michael Jackson’s solo efforts. I wasn’t a huge fan, but I bought most of his CDs.Coincidentally, I was living in Encino, California in 1993. The Jackson family lived not far from me. I would see Joe Jackson at the supermarket or Randy at the car wash. But I never expected to meet Michael. About once a week I would go over the hill to Golden Apple Comics on Melrose. It was owned by a friend, the late Bill Liebowitz, and I also had a bunch of friends who worked there. They told me Michael was a big customer. He would go there with a group of kids and buy them whatever they wanted. He would often spend thousands on those days.I asked one of my friends if Michael bought any comics for himself. He said sure. So I said what kind of books does he read? He said “Anything with kids in them.” I remember thinking: “Brrr!” at the time.Sure, that could be innocent and all, but there were all those stories even then of Michael having kids with him all the time. Which is kind of odd for a grown man, but Michael Jackson was never known for being normal.Everyone I know who knew him said he was a very nice guy, kind of quiet and he did a lot with charity. No one had a bad thing to say about him. But I did detect a certain reluctant vibe when discussing Michael with my friends at the store. They didn’t say why, but they felt he was weird. And this is from people who worked at a store on Melrose in L.A.So one day I came in the store and one of my friends told me Jackson was in the store. And there he was, over by the comics rack. He had his arm around someone like he was on a date. That someone was Jordy Chandler.I walked over to the long racks and pretended not to notice them. Jackson had his people with him including his driver. That driver was later a witness against Jackson in his trial.Jackson was whispering in Jordy’s ear and they were acting totally like people on a date. It was not the kind of behavior a couple of straight guys do together. Then they went back in the store in the employee area and disappeared. They were gone for a half hour. I stuck around and talked to my friends, just shooting the breeze. I assumed Jackson left by the back door to avoid people. But Bill the owner asked me if I wanted to meet Michael Jackson, and I said, sure.Jackson reappeared, and left the store. I went out there with Bill and he introduced me. Jordy had detached from Michael and went to the black SUV. I didn’t shake hands with Jackson, I only got to exchange pleasantries. But I noticed something, when I tried to look him in the eyes, he had this very evasive…almost crazed look. Like someone who had just committed a crime and didn’t want anyone to see them. It was weird.I’ve met a lot of famous celebs and have never seen them as anything other than people. People who work in the entertainment industry, which I was doing at the time myself. So I’ve been very laid back in these encounters. So I know it was nothing I did that made him look at me like that. I thought, “Man, is he paranoid or what? Maybe he’s on something.”After they took off, I went back in the store to buy some comics and I asked one of my friends what they were doing in the back room for so long. He said Michael and Jordy were in the bathroom for a half hour.Yeah.I said, huh? He said that’s not unusual for him. Now, I don’t know what they did in there, but it was a small one-person bathroom. And I can only think of a couple reasons two people would go into a small bathroom together. One of the nice reasons is they were helping the other with their costumes. He wasn’t wearing anything that out of the ordinary. So that leaves the other two reasons, since we can assume Jordy is potty trained at 13. Sex or drugs. When the story about the molestation broke a few months later, that pretty much made up my mind which reason it was.A lot of people say Michael Jackson did not molest kids. Maybe not. But I have a hard time believing it.Everyone I know, who worked with Michael had great things to say about him, so I suppose he wasn’t a bad person. But if you have followed his story closely, he was no saint either. He actively worked to insure his brothers would never succeed. He reneged on deals constantly and didn’t pay people he owed their money. There will be a lot of stories coming out about him and his defenders will work hard to try to canonize him. But the truth is a lot more complex.

    Laila Mickelwait - PornHub
Pornhub is a modern phenomenon. Boasting over 130m visitors a day, the site caters for almost all legal tastes.
But beneath the surface lies another tale. A saga of abuse and manipulation, of assault and rape. Pornhub may indeed be the choice destination for frustrated people, but it is also a portal which seems to show if not actively promote material which is, at best, questionable.
Laila Mickelwait is a campaigner who has been trying to reel in the Pornhub beast and its owners for almost twenty years. She believes the site has become a marketplace for trafficking and sexual perversion, and as such it's owners should be brought to task.
She tells Ed Opperman of the obstruction and obfuscation she has encountered from the multi-millionaire website management, and how it's just fueled her determination to shut them down.
