Phillip Crawford Jr. - The Mafia and the Gays
Former NY Lawyer and true crime author Phillip J. Crawford joins Ed Opperman to discuss how the Mafia capitalised on the gay scene at a time when it was illegal and frowned upon.
The Mafia and the Gays meticulously documents how the mob controlled gay bars for decades in New York and Chicago due to their once illicit status, and relies upon an extensive collection of primary sources including FBI files many of which were not publicly available until acquired by author Phillip Crawford Jr. through substantive amounts of FOIs.

Author Walter Herbst brings four decades of intensive, comprehensive research to uncovering the truth behind the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, including an analysis of how the manipulations of misguided patriots in the military-industrial complex and intelligence community led inevitably to the events in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963.
Why did Lee Harvey Oswald ask for the only attorney in America who had represented someone who tried to take over the U.S. government?
And why did President Eisenhower warn the nation about a Military-Industrial Complex in his last televised address as President?
During the Cold War, the United States looked to curtail the spread of communism by the Soviet Union. “Massive Retaliation” defined U.S. foreign policy. A perpetual war machine was created, made up of major defense contractors and right-wing military generals, whose motivation was greed and to prepare the nation for war.
The threat of nuclear holocaust allowed the CIA to grow out of control. They engaged in drug experimentation on innocents, assassinations, and used Mafia drug money to secretly fund their most heinous operations.
Not everyone agreed with this. Generals resigned in protest, and there was concern of a possible military government takeover. With Kennedy in office, they would resort to assassination.
Despite his Marxist views, young Lee Harvey Oswald associated with Fascists and shared their right-wing ideology. There is physical evidence that Marine Oswald’s defection to the Soviet Union in 1959 was a CIA operation to make it seem he died in Russia. A Soviet “sleeper agent” returned to the U.S., who could blame for any crime.
Seventeen months later, JFK was assassinated. Coincidence or conspiracy?

On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather’s car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it. Starkweather and Fugate’s capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. The event would serve as the inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers and Springsteen’s iconic album Nebraska. Today, the story has dropped far from the national consciousness. With new material, new reporting, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Fugate, the tale is ripe for an updated and definitive retelling. In Starkweather, bestselling author Harry N. MacLean tells the story of this shocking event and its lasting impact, a crime spree that struck deep into the heart of the heartland.
Harry N. MacLean joins Ed Opperman to discuss this book and more.
