Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall's exposé of America's political police force, the FBI, reveals the steel fist undergirding "compassionate conservatism's" velvet glove. Using original FBI memos, the authors provide extensive analysis of the agency's treatment of the left, from the Communist Party in the 1950s to the Central America solidarity movement in the 1980s. The authors' new introduction posits likely trajectories for domestic repression.

2024 Best Books Awards Finalist – Biography
In today’s sharply divided political culture, finding a deliberative leader with an enduring commitment to bipartisanship feels hopeless.
Half a century ago, in one of the United States’ most trying hours, a relatively unknown congressman from New Jersey rose to the occasion as chair of the House Judiciary Committee, which established the gold standard for presidential impeachment in holding President Richard M. Nixon accountable for his crimes.
Watergate’s Unexpected Hero: The Life of Peter W. Rodino Jr. is the long overdue biography of a man whom many pundits thought would shrivel as he entered the national spotlight. Instead, his calm presence during the televised proceedings helped to reassure an apprehensive nation, and he quickly became a household name.
Rodino remained a revered figure on Capitol Hill, lionized for his stewardship in a crisis until he retired fourteen years later. Author Lawrence Spinelli, who served as Rodino’s press secretary, goes beyond Watergate to offer a meticulously researched, balanced account of his mentor’s service.
On the fiftieth anniversary of Nixon’s resignation, Spinelli shares new insights into historic events. Relying on primary sources and Rodino’s personal recollections, Spinelli explores an extraordinary life that began in the rough streets of Newark’s Little Italy and culminated in a distinguished public career stretching from the New Deal to the presidency of Ronald Reagan.
Along the way, Rodino worked with iconic political leaders to help address a wide range of public policy issues that still resonate today, including race relations, immigration, voting rights, and economic equality.

Dawn Schiller - The Road Through Wonderland: Surviving John Holmes
Jun 1, 2023
In this archive show, Dawn Schiller joins Ed Opperman to talk about her book, The Road Through Wonderland: Surviving John Holmes. A story of abuse, drugs, porn, murder and survival. It would have been so easy to give up. But she did something harder. She took a bad situation and, over time, turned it around.
Painstakingly honest, this chilling memoir reveals how a teenager became immersed in the bizarre life of legendary porn star John Holmes. Starting with a childhood that moulded her perfectly to fall for the seduction of “the king of porn,” this autobiography recounts the perilous road that Dawn Schiller travelled—from drugs and addiction to beatings, arrests, forced prostitution, and being sold to the drug underworld. After living through the horrific Wonderland murders of 1981, she entered protective custody, ran from the FBI, and turned in John Holmes to the police. This is the true story of a young girl’s harrowing escape from one of the most infamous public figures, her struggle to survive, and her recovery from unthinkable abuse.
