The book moves through the labour wars, company towns, Ivy Lee and the birth of modern public relations, the rise of corporate legal defence, the insurance system, Watergate, tobacco’s manufacture of doubt, internal investigations, NDAs, victim-management systems, private intelligence, digital reputation management, bankruptcy innovation, platform moderation, and the anti-union and security industries that still form the coercive bedrock beneath the polished surface. Along the way it takes in major case studies including BCCI, the 2008 financial crisis, Boeing, Purdue and the Sacklers, Flint, Deepwater Horizon, Catholic Church abuse scandals, Cambridge Analytica, and more.
What emerges is not a string of isolated scandals but a single historical structure. The Fixers argues that modern capitalism does not simply produce harm and then apologise badly. It has built an enormous professional apparatus to contain fallout, delay accountability, disperse blame, price catastrophe, and preserve ownership. Law firms, PR agencies, consultants, investigators, lobbyists, insurers, crisis managers and digital operatives do not sit at the edge of the system. They are part of how it functions.
