Genesis 7-What did God see in Noah? Jan 09, 2024
    Show notes R.A.M.P. (READ-APPLY-MEDITATE-PRAY)
    Here is what I READ:
    • From the last verse of chapter 6, into chapter 7, Noah did everything as the LORD commanded him (vs 5).
    • God saw that Noah alone was righteous (vs 1).
    • There were more than just two of some animals - specifically 7 pairs of those approved for eating and sacrifice, and 7 pairs of every kind of bird (vs 2-3).
    • God was specific in sharing His plans. He told Noah exactly when the rain would start, and how many days it would rain (vs 4a). He was also clear about the purpose of the flood (vs 4b)
    • The LORD was the one who closed the door to the boat (vs 16).
    • God wiped out everything. The only ones who survived were those in the boat with Noah (vs 23).

When God looked at Noah, He saw someone who alone was righteous. Let that sink in. There wasn’t anyone else in God’s eyes who fit that description.
He saw someone who stood in stark contrast to the surrounding culture. Noah didn’t conform to the morals and standards of the day. If he had, God would not have called him to this task.
God saw a man who did everything as he was commanded. There was no partial obedience.
    APPLY:
If I want to be used by God, I must worship Him in the details. Am I living righteously? Am I obedient to what He has commanded? Noah’s obedience had a far reaching impact on those closest to him - his family. I can’t help but think that if we exercise radical obedience, we might see God do some things around us that we never thought possible!
    MEDITATE:
“It was by faith that Noah built a large boat to save his family from the flood. He obeyed God, who warned him about things that had never happened before. By his faith, Noah condemned the rest of the world, and he received the righteousness that comes by faith.” Hebrews 11:7
    PRAY:
Jesus, teach me to SHOW you my love in the way I obey.

John 6– Why did many disciples turn away from Jesus? Jan 08, 2024
    Show notes

Why did many disciples turn away from Jesus?
I think about communion. The grape juice and cracker - a picture of the broken body of Jesus and His blood that was poured out on the cross. He endured all that to save me from my sins, so that if I would believe on His sacrifice, I could be forgiven and experience an eternity with Him in Heaven.
The message of the cross is offensive because it assumes that I can’t save myself. The cross cares nothing for my self-esteem, because it knows that left to my self-esteem, I would suffer an eternity without Christ.
It’s humiliating to admit “I am not enough,” but it’s comforting to rest in the truth that “He is enough.”
Romans 8:3 - “The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.”
To whom would I go? You have the words that give eternal life. I believe and I know You are the Holy One of God!
Today we’re reading John 6 from the New Living Translation.

Genesis 6- Why did God send a great flood? Jan 08, 2024
    Show notes

Why did God send a great flood?
There are many varying perspectives on the precise meaning of Genesis 6:1-4, but one thing that we can’t escape is that there was a growing evil on the earth.
The creation that He once said was “very good” (Genesis 1:31) had now broken His heart! The evil was so bad, and the darkness was so dark that He needed to intervene.
God takes sin very seriously. He is just and must punish sin.
God also takes righteousness very seriously. In fact, He is looking for people like Noah who live according to His Word.
A right heart is a heart God can use. When I obey Jesus and leave my sin, I am free to be used by Him.
2 Chronicles 16:9a says “For the eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.”
Jesus, please search my heart and show me the things that don’t glorify you.
Today we’re reading Genesis 6 from the New Living Translation.

Genesis 5 - In a long list of names, what was special about a guy named Enoch? (New Living Translation) Jan 05, 2024
    Show notes

You might be tempted to skip the chapter with all the funny names, but don't!
What was special about a guy named Enoch? He walked closely with God - what an amazing thing to be known for!
The book of Hebrews says this about him: "It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying - 'he disappeared, because God took him.' For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God." - Hebrews 11:5
For deeper reading, check out the book of Jude - Enoch is quoted in verses 14 & 15. This guy, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied about the future coming of the Lord to bring judgement on false teachers.
Please don't skip the chapter with the funny names!
Today we’re reading Genesis 5 from the New Living Translation.

John 5 - Why did Jesus perform miracles? (New Living Translation) Jan 05, 2024
    Show notes

Why did Jesus perform miracles? Jesus said that his miracles (and teachings) prove that He was sent by God as the Messiah.
Why does that matter? Consider the audience. As Jesus healed a paralyzed man, He was met with criticism by the religious leaders! Not only that - because He claimed to be the Son of God, those religious leaders wanted to kill Him! 😳
The miracles that He did, and the things He taught astounded everyone. They couldn't argue with His words, and they certainly couldn't argue with the miracles themselves. People responded differently - some chose to believe - and others chose to reject.
Today we’re reading John 5 from the New Living Translation.

John 4 - How did the woman at the well recognize that Jesus is the Messiah? Jan 04, 2024
    Show notes

How did the woman at the well recognize that Jesus is the Messiah? He told her everything she ever did! Wow - just imagine what it must have been like to meet Jesus like that. He knew her past and all the things she had done (the stuff she wasn't proud of) - and he still offered her something called "living water."
John 7:37-39 explains a little more about "living water" & we can see the results of "living water" in Acts 2 & beyond! Exciting stuff.
This woman at the well became sort of an evangelist because she ran back to the village and told the people about this man she had met. Many people in the village believed in Jesus because of what she had said. Never underestimate the power of YOUR testimony!

Genesis 4 - What was God's warning to Cain? (New Living Translation) Jan 04, 2024
    Show notes

What was God's warning to Cain? "Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master."
I'm reminded of a similar warning in the Bible. We see it in Psalm 95 and in Hebrews 3 & 4.
"Today when you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts."
Cain had a choice to make in his day... and you and I have choices to make today. I pray we'll follow Jesus.

Genesis 3 - Why did Adam and Eve have to leave the Garden of Eden? (New Living Translation) Jan 03, 2024
    Show notes

Why did Adam and Eve have to leave the Garden of Eden? They sinned. They did exactly what God said NOT to do.
And... it began with a question from a snake, "did God really say..."
Jesus said "The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life." - John 10:10.
Adam and Eve got ripped off big time! That act of disobedience meant they lost the garden and their incredible fellowship with God. Maybe you're like me and you've experienced the awful consequences of sin and selfishness. How do you move on? Start fresh and do the next right thing today. The consequences may still remain, but His mercy is brand new.
Today we’re reading Genesis 3 from the New Living Translation.

John 3 - How can someone have eternal life? (New Living Translation) Jan 03, 2024
    Show notes

How can someone have eternal life? If you've seen someone holding up a sign that says "John 3:16" this is where it comes from!
A man named Nicodemus, a religous leader and Pharisee, came to Jesus with some questions under cover of night. Jesus told him exactly how to gain eternal life - and you'll find it too in "John 3:16."
Did Nicodemus ultimately become a follower of Jesus? Check this out - we meet him again in John 7:50 where he defends Jesus, and in John 19:39 where he assists with the burial of Jesus following the crucifixion.
He's an amazing character in the New Testament!
