Today we’re reading Hebrews 11 from the New Living Translation.
As you listen (or read) today, check out how much of this chapter is focused on the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob! Maybe you missed a few chapters in Genesis - feel free to go back and listen for examples of how they lived by faith. One example - Jacob's prayer in today's reading of Genesis 32.

We’re starting a new book today and it’s one of my favorites! The writer is not identified, but many believe that it was written by the apostle Paul.
The book of Hebrews was written to a Jewish audience - and seeks to connect the dots between many Old Testament truths and the person of Jesus.
One of the themes is that “Jesus is greater,” and in Chapter 1 we see that:
Jesus is greater than the word of the prophets (vs 1-2).
Jesus is greater than our sin (vs 3).
Jesus is greater than the angels (vs 4).
This is an amazing book - full of warnings - and full of promises.
Today we’re reading Hebrews 1 from the New Living Translation.

Today we’re reading Genesis 22 from the New Living Translation.
Abraham and Isaac went up that mountain to worship the LORD through sacrifice.
Isaac sensed that something wasn’t right, but Abraham assured his son, “God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering….” And that is what he did. A ram took Isaac’s place.
Hebrews 11:19 gives us insight into this man of faith - “Abraham reasoned that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead.”
This sacrifice was a foreshadow...
Yahweh Yireh - “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.” Centuries later, all nations on earth would be blessed through another sacrifice on mount Calvary - the perfect Lamb of God, Jesus - that would be provided (in our place) take away the sin of the world.
"For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life." - John 3:16

“she is my sister…”
Sarah was in her 90’s. And King Abimelech of Gerar wanted her.
Abraham was hiding behind a half-truth.
Motivated by fear, he argued, “she really is my sister...” (vs 12).
Only he had left out the other part - that he had married her.
APPLY:
A half truth is always a lie. God knew that - and he loved Abraham and Sarah too much to let them get by with it.
Not only did God expose the lie - he also blew Abraham’s cover - telling Abimelech, “Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, FOR HE IS A PROPHET” (vs 7).
Abraham, despite being a prophet, was still a sinner.
And it’s important to note that Abraham’s lie didn’t absolve Abimelech of responsibility for his actions. He was still wrong.
In the end, Abraham prayed for Abimelech and God brought healing to that community. Whew. Close call. Abraham and Sarah are on the verge of finally seeing God’s promise to them fulfilled in the birth of Isaac & we’ll read about that in the next chapter.
But for now, when God exposes something in our lives, that’s his discipline - and he does it because he loves us.
MEDITATE:
Psalm 94:12 “Joyful are those you discipline, LORD, those you teach with your instructions.”
PRAY:
Jesus, teach us to love the truth.

Today we’re reading John 20 from the New Living Translation.
I’m reflecting on verse 31.
“But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.“
The word, “believe” in English is the Greek word “πιστεύω” (*pisteuō*). It means: “to think to be true, to be persuaded of, to credit, place confidence in.”
The stories of all the miraculous things that Jesus did - including his resurrection - were recorded so that you and I would “continue” to be persuaded of the truth of who Jesus is - and place our full confidence in Him as Savior.
Why "continue to believe?" The writer of Hebrews said it like this: "So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it" (Hebrews 2:1).
Drifting is a real thing - and I'm praying for you and I today that if there has been some drifting going on in our hearts, that we'll come back quickly to Jesus.

I'm gonna be real - this was a tough chapter to read.
Today, we’re reading Genesis 19 from the New Living Translation.
If you compare Abraham and Lot, you’ll see that Abraham lived apart from the culture - in a tent. Lot lived with the culture - sitting at the city entrance - and calling the men of the city his “brothers.” He was even willing to sacrifice his daughters to appease them. It appears that Sodom had a strong influence on their family. Lot was hesitant to leave, his wife looked back, and his daughters seem to have picked up a rather warped worldview.
Ezekiel 16:49 says this - “Sodom’s sins were pride, gluttony, and laziness…”
It is a terrible story of prideful men with no accountability, doing whatever they wanted with whomever they wanted.
The people we choose as our influencers matter. The people our kids choose as their influencers matter.
That said, here’s an interesting connection:
The child that Lot had with his oldest daughter was named Moab. While the Moabites became Israel’s enemies, there was one Moabite woman many years later named Ruth.
Ruth (who had been widowed) followed her mother-in-law back to the land of Judah, saying “your people will be my people, and your God will by my God.” She met a man named Boaz, whom she married. Boaz & Ruth had a child named Obed. Obed had a child named Jesse. And Jesse became the father of King David. Eventually from this family with a Moabite mother, the Messiah would come - Jesus.

Today, we’re reading John 19 from the New Living Translation.
This chapter is sacred ground. Jesus was falsely condemned to death. Twice in these verses, Pilate pronounced him “not guilty” (vs 4, 6). Pilate was afraid of what was happening (vs 8), and he tried to release Jesus (vs 12).
Yet the people demanded that he be crucified because he called himself the Son of God (vs 7).
And so - Jesus was whipped, made to wear a crown of thorns, and nailed to a cross.
Isaiah 53 was written around 700 years before the time of Jesus, yet it describes in great detail many of the things he experienced during the crucifixion. Isaiah 53 also pre-dates crucifixion by several hundred years.
Here is what Isaiah 53:10-11 says:
“But it was the LORD’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the LORD’s good plan will prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous.”
Another interesting connection - following the crucifixion, we see two men come to take the body of Jesus. Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders (see John 9:22 & 12:42-43). The other was Nicodemus who came to Jesus by night (John 3).
Both of these guys became followers of Jesus - and eventually came to the cross to show their love.

Today, we’re reading Genesis 18 from the New Living Translation.
In verse 19, God said this about Abraham: “I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just.”
The LORD separated Abraham out from all the others “so that”…
Abraham was set apart for a purpose - and that purpose was to lead his sons and their families to keep the way of the LORD.

Today, we’re reading John 18 from the New Living Translation.
I’m thinking about verse 37…. One of the greatest ways we can show love to others is by telling the truth.
Jesus came to share an awful truth —> you and I have sinned.
But Jesus also shared a wonderful truth —> you and I can be forgiven.
Sugar-coating a terrible reality is not love. Jesus did no such thing. He told people the truth because he loved them.
Despite believing that Jesus was innocent, Pilate asked “what is truth?” He then proceeded to lean into the popular opinion of people he wanted to keep happy.
We each have to decide for ourselves what we are going to do with the truth that Jesus shared.

Before Jesus was betrayed in the garden of Gethsemane, here are some of the things he prayed for:
He prayed for his disciples.
He prayed for their protection by the power of his name.
He prayed that by the power of his name, they would be unified.
He prayed that they would be holy through obedience to his Word.
He prayed for all believers everywhere who would believe their testimony - that they would be one together - united by the truth they’ve received.
He prayed that their unity would give proof to the world that Jesus is the Messiah.

READ: Here are some things that stood out to me.
It was a bad idea.
When Sarai was unable to have a child, she came up with the idea to give her husband another woman - well… because maybe she could have a child with him. 🤷♂️ God’s design for marriage from the beginning was 1 man & 1 woman. It was intended to be an exclusive relationship.
What makes things a little more complicated is that Sarai (in a round-about way) pins her reasoning on God. “The LORD has prevented me from having children. Go and sleep with my servant.”
Sometimes we make poor decisions and blame God.
Read the chapter and you’ll see the chaos and heartbreak that ensues.
What about Hagar? Well, she was kind of caught in the middle, right? She was a servant - and probably didn’t have a lot of say in the matter. Yet we read that “she began to treat her mistress, Sarai, with contempt.”
I’ll say it again - this was a bad idea.
But here’s something to consider: When Sarai retaliated and treated Hagar so harshly that she ran away, the angel of the LORD appeared to her and made a special promise. From that day on, Hagar referred to the LORD as “the God who sees me.”
If you or your family has experienced brokenness because of your own sin, or because of the sin of someone else - be encouraged that the same God who saw Hagar in the wilderness also sees YOU. He is extending grace, mercy, forgiveness, and a fresh start through Jesus Christ.

I see a beautiful connection in today’s readings - between Genesis 15 and John 15.
Jesus said:
“I no longer call you slaves because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn’t choose me, I chose you...” - John 15:15-16a
The night He was betrayed, Jesus shared some amazing promises with His friends. He confided in them. He told them about His coming death, and the home He would make for them in Heaven. He told them about the promise of the Holy Spirit, and He promised them that persecution would come because they followed Him.
These disciples of Jesus walked closely with Jesus during His ministry on earth - but only because He chose them first.
Similarly in Genesis 15, the LORD Himself spoke with Abram in a vision and shared some amazing promises with him too! He confided in Abram. The God of Heaven shared that Abram would have his own son, and that he would eventually possess the entire land surrounding him. He also promised Abram that persecution would come on his descendants.
Abram walked closely with God as he traveled on earth, lived in tents, and built altars - but only because God chose him first and called him from Ur of the Chaldeans.
Here are a couple takeaways:

Abram walked closely with God as he traveled on earth, lived in tents, and built altars - but only because God chose him first and called him from Ur of the Chaldeans.
Here are a couple takeaways:
In the previous chapter, Lot had moved his tents to a place near Sodom. Genesis 13:13 shares the truth of Sodom at that time - they were extremely wicked and were constantly sinning against God. Time has passed, and now Lot is living IN Sodom. Based on what the Bible says to be true about Sodom, and knowing how Lot’s story ends later in this book - he should have stayed far, far away from this city. As war broke out, Sodom was captured by a rival king and Lot was taken captive. Abram had a deep commitment to his nephew, Lot. He staged a daring rescue and was able to bring him back, along with the other captives.
After victory, Abram is met by the King of Sodom and a mysterious figure named Melchizedek. Melchizedek - The King of Salem, and priest of God - came to bless Abram. Abram gave him a tithe of what was recovered. Melchizedek appears later in the Bible - in Psalm 110, and in Hebrews 5, 6, & 7.
This is what Hebrews 7:3 says about him - “There is no record of his father or mother or any of his ancestors - no beginning or end to his life. He remains a priest forever, resembling the Son of God.”
Abram was called by God to travel by faith to a new land. God made amazing promises to him. Abram practiced habitual sacrifice and worship to God. Then he was visited & blessed by a king and priest who resembled the Son of God - JESUS.
Hebrews 7 continues in verses 24-25 “But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.”
This year, we're encouraging you to go a little deeper into your Bible with the acronym - R.A.M.P.

When Jesus met the woman at the well a few chapters ago, He said, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water (John 4:10)”
In today’s reading, Jesus says all who are thirsty can come and drink and experience rivers of living water flowing from their heart! John the Apostle (the writer of the Gospel of John) tells us that Jesus was talking about the Holy Spirit who would later be given to all who believe (see Acts 2). But at this point the Spirit had not been given because Jesus had not yet ascended to Heaven.
Notice how the crowds respond to Jesus in the verses that follow.
He will have a lot more to teach us about the Holy Spirit as we continue in John (specifically chapters 14-16)!
Today we’re reading John 7 from the New Living Translation.

Why did many disciples turn away from Jesus?
I think about communion. The grape juice and cracker - a picture of the broken body of Jesus and His blood that was poured out on the cross. He endured all that to save me from my sins, so that if I would believe on His sacrifice, I could be forgiven and experience an eternity with Him in Heaven.
The message of the cross is offensive because it assumes that I can’t save myself. The cross cares nothing for my self-esteem, because it knows that left to my self-esteem, I would suffer an eternity without Christ.
It’s humiliating to admit “I am not enough,” but it’s comforting to rest in the truth that “He is enough.”
Romans 8:3 - “The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins.”
To whom would I go? You have the words that give eternal life. I believe and I know You are the Holy One of God!

Why did God send a great flood?
There are many varying perspectives on the precise meaning of Genesis 6:1-4, but one thing that we can’t escape is that there was a growing evil on the earth.
The creation that He once said was “very good” (Genesis 1:31) had now broken His heart! The evil was so bad, and the darkness was so dark that He needed to intervene.
God takes sin very seriously. He is just and must punish sin.
God also takes righteousness very seriously. In fact, He is looking for people like Noah who live according to His Word.
A right heart is a heart God can use. When I obey Jesus and leave my sin, I am free to be used by Him.
2 Chronicles 16:9a says “For the eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.”
Jesus, please search my heart and show me the things that don’t glorify you.

Why did Jesus perform miracles? Jesus said that his miracles (and teachings) prove that He was sent by God as the Messiah.
Why does that matter? Consider the audience. As Jesus healed a paralyzed man, He was met with criticism by the religious leaders! Not only that - because He claimed to be the Son of God, those religious leaders wanted to kill Him! 😳
The miracles that He did, and the things He taught astounded everyone. They couldn't argue with His words, and they certainly couldn't argue with the miracles themselves. People responded differently - some chose to believe - and others chose to reject.

What was special about a guy named Enoch? He walked closely with God - what an amazing thing to be known for!
The book of Hebrews says this about him: "It was by faith that Enoch was taken up to heaven without dying - 'he disappeared, because God took him.' For before he was taken up, he was known as a person who pleased God." - Hebrews 11:5
For deeper reading, check out the book of Jude - Enoch is quoted in verses 14 & 15. This guy, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied about the future coming of the Lord to bring judgement on false teachers.

How did the woman at the well recognize that Jesus is the Messiah? He told her everything she ever did! Wow - just imagine what it must have been like to meet Jesus like that. He knew her past and all the things she had done (the stuff she wasn't proud of) - and he still offered her something called "living water."
John 7:37-39 explains a little more about "living water" & we can see the results of "living water" in Acts 2 & beyond! Exciting stuff.

Why did Adam and Eve have to leave the Garden of Eden? They sinned. They did exactly what God said NOT to do.
And... it began with a question from a snake, "did God really say..."
Jesus said "The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life." - John 10:10.
Adam and Eve got ripped off big time! That act of disobedience meant they lost the garden and their incredible fellowship with God. His first miracle was performed at a wedding celebration. While the intent of the miracle was so that His disciples would believe (verse 11) - I do think the fact that it happened at a wedding was significant. If you are married (or hope to be married someday), Jesus cares about that all-important relationship. He loves you and your spouse - and He loves your family!
So, what made Him angry? I'll let you figure that part out yourself. 😉
It may surprise you to see Jesus express anger - but it's an important part of His character. I need to be more like Jesus and get angry about the right things!
