Indiana: 1899 & 1921 Apr 28, 2022

Show notes

For people who died over 100 years ago, there’s no one alive today who remembers them. So if I can read their names out loud, then maybe somewhere in the universe, their lights will shine again, if only for a moment. Because when there’s no one left who remembers, it’s hard to imagine that these people ever existed at all. But they did.

Murray Korman - Photographer of The Vintage Babes of Broadway Mar 31, 2022

Show notes

From 1926 through the 1940s, there was a very successful photographer in New York City. He photographed stars of Broadway, not to mention some of the most well-known and beloved celebrities of the time like Bob Hope, Josephine Baker, Betty Grable, and Jackie Gleason. Not only that, He was also the photographer of the famous and rich of New York society. Anyone who was anyone wanted this man to take their picture. Over the course of his career he took nearly 475,000 photographs.

One would assume that this man is well known and fondly remembered today, but he’s not. In fact, by the time he died in 1961 he had already slipped into oblivion. And in the time since his death, the man and his stunning work are almost completely forgotten.
A big THANK YOU to co-authors Clyde Adams and Maureen McCabe for bringing the story of Murray Korman to my attention, and for sharing their new book Vintage Babes of Broadway: Through the 20th Century Lens of Murray Korman.

The Indictment of The Body Snatchers Mar 17, 2022

Show notes

By the 19th century, as the structure of the human body became an area of serious scientific study, cadavers were used for research, and perhaps more importantly, for the training of new physicians. There was only one problem…there weren’t enough bodies to go around.

(not so) Happy Valentine's Day Feb 13, 2022

Show notes

Grief is something that never leaves you, especially when the loss happens on a special day like, say, Valentine’s Day. Everyone experiences the loss of a loved one at some point in their lives. For people who died over 80 years ago, there will be few, if any, alive today who remember them.

So if I can read their names out loud, then maybe somewhere in the universe, their lights will shine again, if only for a moment. Because, when there is no one left who remembers them, it’s hard to imagine they ever existed at all. But they did.
