Episode 187: Kellian Adams Pletcher and Brian Pletcher of Green Door Labs Mar 03, 2019
    Show notes

NYC Curator and NoPro Managing Editor Kathryn Yu tracks down the always busy Kellian Adams Pletcher and Brian Pletcher of Green Door Labs for a wide-ranging conversation about the collision of immersive theatre and game design. They discuss Kellian and Brian's work on shows like Club Drosselmeyer and Save the Munbax and how their approach to audience agency and interactive storytelling has changed over the years, as well as touching on topics such as designing diegetic puzzles, allowing the audience to choose their level of engagement, incorporating different types of game mechanics, designing experiences for both the general public and "super-puzzlers," writing bad endings on purpose, and much, much more.

Episode 186: Saying Goodbye to the Old Tank, Hello To The New Feb 15, 2019
    Show notes

Seasons change, time passes, friends move away... or up the street.

Think Tank Gallery is moving from its home at 939 Maple, the site of many a memory for immersive LA, to a new space at the edge of the Arts District and Little Tokyo. We get together with Jacob Patterson of Think Tank in the podcast studio at the Old Tank one last time to reminisce, talk about ongoing relations with the city of LA, and what's next for Think Tank.

Content Advisory: we curse. As we often do.

Episode 185: Tom Pearson, Third Rail Projects Feb 09, 2019
    Show notes

Managing Editor and NYC Curator Kathryn Yu catches up with Tom Pearson, one of the Artistic Directors of Third Rail Projects (Then She Fell, The Grand Paradise, Ghost Light, Behind the City) in New York City as the company prepares to launch a new show in DC, Confection.

They discuss the creation of Then She Fell, its influence on immersive creators, as well as Tom’s work as an immersive educator, as a poet with The Sandpiper’s Spell, as a documentary film producer on Between Yourself and Me, and also with TRP’s Global Performance Studio in Russia and China.

(Tom also hints at an upcoming Third Rail Projects’ show that is currently in development and planned to premiere in late 2019.)

Episode 184: Jay Rinsky of Little Cinema Feb 01, 2019
    Show notes

Little Cinema is a fixture in New York City's art scene, bringing films to life at the House of Yes and the Brooklyn Museum. They've also spread their wings to Bonnaroo, and have crafted a number of immersive premieres for television series from TNT. The latest of these for the series I Am The Night, which debuted this week on the network.

We talk with founder Jay Rinsky about the company's arc, the striking work at the heart of the I Am The Night premiere, and forging a path between art and commerce.

Also: creators should take note of the industry survey the Immersive Design Summit is conducting for an industry report to be released -- for free -- during the summit to the public.

Episode 183: Checking in with Room Escape Artist on the Poland fire and more Jan 26, 2019
    Show notes

A somber lead topic this week, as we talk about the escape room fire in Poland that left five teenage girls dead earlier this month with our collegues from Room Escape Artist: David & Lisa Spira.

That plus notes on their upcoming tours, the immersive Industry Survey we're compiling for an upcoming Industry Report to be released for free during the Immersive Design Summit, and a bit about a special moment at a recent event in LA.

    Episode 182 - NYC After Dark Jan 19, 2019
    Show notes

Kathryn gathers up part of the New York City team -- Leah Ableson, Edward Mylechreest, and Michaela Holland -- for one of our patented After Dark episodes. Come along as we meet the team!

Then, in LA, Noah finally gets down to an old fashioned rant about price/value.

    Welcome back!

Episode 181: NoPro Live - The Fifth Anniversary Show Jan 11, 2019
    Show notes

For our fifth anniversary, we wanted to do something special, and we maybe went a little over the top.

We hit up Two Bit Circus, where Josh Randall (Blackout) co-ordinates immersive experiences and got ahold of Club 01... and kicked the tires on a "late night" format.

Brent Bushnell and Eric Gradman - the founders of Two Bit Circus are our first guests. Followed by Lauren Ludwig and Monica Miklas of Capital W, birthday boy Josh Randall (no, really, it was his BIRTHDAY and he did this for us), Stashhouse LA's Tommy Honton, and Steve Boyle of Epic Immersive who came down from SF.

Anthony Robinson announces. Chris Porter does the music live. Ian Momii jumped in to run the soundboard at the last minute, and Noah Nelson is your host.

Recorded live (so expect bumps) and listener discretion is advised.

Episode 180: Carl Choi of The Great Company Jan 04, 2019
    Show notes

Carl Choi is the founder and CEO of The Great Company, an experiential studio which in the past few years has emerged as a leader in producing and creating space for immersive work in LA. GreatCo teamed up with Jon Braver to produce Delusion and recently played host to Chained: A Victorian Nightmare. Like us, GreatCo is all in on immersive -- keeping the engines running by whatever means necessary while getting great projects out the door.

We've been meaning to get Carl on the show for a while now, and sat down for a good long chat before the holidays.

This episode is brought to you by listeners like you and Thymele Arts in LA, which provides office facilities for NoPro.

    Episode 179 - 2018 After Dark Dec 29, 2018
    Show notes

Hosts Noah Nelson (LA) and Kathryn Yu (NYC) are joined by NoPro's Anthony Robinson (new title: Features Editor) to close out 2018 on this hella long After Dark episode.

    What? It's a WHOLE YEAR.

Warning: Noah curses. We digress. A lot. There's talk of Star Wars land and video games. By EVERYBODY.
