Chief Billy Goldfeder from The Secret List May 10, 2016
    Show notes

Major thanks to Chief Goldfeder for not only talking to us but doing it after an 11 hour car ride. I think it is safe to say that the Chief is the first guest we've had to accomplish such a feat before our interview. For those of you very few whom haven't heard of Chief Goldfeder and the Secret list, first what's wrong with you. Go to firefighterclosecalls.com to see Chief's website and to subscribe to his newsletter, The Secret List. Chief Goldfeder started "The Secret List" about 20 years ago. It's updated continuously and includes news from all over the web on firefighter incidents and accidents— how they happened, what went wrong, what firefighters can learn from it so as not to repeat.

Jesse talks with the Chief about everything under the sun, from how he started the Secret list and what makes it so successful to what drives him personal. It's a longer podcast than we typically do but we really think you guys are going to dig it. As usual, please let us know what you think about the podcast by email Jesse at JRoman@nfpa.org.

Also, subscribe to our podcast on iTunes, Google Play or whatever podcasting app you prefer. If you feel like sharing use with your friends, we wouldn't complain.

The NEC is always a fascinating topic but this upcoming edition is jammed packed with emerging issues. Jeff and Mark talk about the three big items the NEC is either addressing or updating; those items being photovoltaic, direct current micro grids and energy storage systems. Please note everything talked about in this podcast will be up for review at the 2016 NFPA Conference and Expo in June.

How are Local Fire Departments Handling Wildfire? Dec 08, 2015
    Show notes

Out of more than 63,000 wildland fires reported last year, specialized wildland firefighters responded to just 112, meaning local fire departments handled the rest. But there is little information about how well trained or capable municipal departments are to handle this job.

In this podcast, Jesse sits down with NFPA Senior Research Analyst Hylton Haynes to discuss a new NFPA study that looks at how prepared local fire departments are to deal with the increasing number of wildfire calls they receive each year. Haynes and other NFPA researchers interviewed 46 high-ranking fire officials from urban and rural departments on a variety of topics related to wildfire operations to find out what’s working, and where the pain points are. Hear what they discovered in this interesting podcast.

On today’s podcast, Jesse speaks with Randy Tucker, a board member on the Alliance, about the ongoing effort to improve factory safety. Jesse also speaks with Kathleen Almand, the vice president of Research at NFPA, who just returned from Bangladesh as part of an NFPA mission to help the Alliance assess the work that has been done so far.
