I decided that since this will be the first episode of the new year, I would cover the first towns North Carolina. Bath was the very first incorporated town in NC followed just a few years later by New Bern. Now because these are the first towns in what would become our great state, naturally, there will be some state firsts that occur here so keep an ear out for them.

This episode mostly takes place in England, except for a short but very important part on an island that would be called Roanoke and become remembered as one of the most famous mysteries in North Carolina history. Sir Walter Raleigh had a very interesting life starting as a farm boy, becoming a prominent member of the royal court, and then dying by the very crown he served.

In this episode, I am going to tell you about a hotel that, at one time, was considered the nicest hotel in the world. The Grove Park Inn looks and probably feels like an American castle.

I am going to introduce you to Edwin Grove and tell you how he came to build this amazing resort in Ashville. Then I will tell you about one special guest who stayed at the inn for a year, and another guest who has been there for a hundred years.

She was the daughter of a sharecropper who became a glamourous star who mingled with people like Mickey Rooney and Frank Sinatra. But through all of this, she never missed a chance to come back home to North Carolina and spend time with her family.

In this episode, I am going to tell you all about my most favorite attraction in North Carolina. The largest zoo in the world. Of all the places I have visited in this state, The North Carolina Zoo is the one I have been to the most. I am going to give you a rundown on the history of zoos and take you from into our zoo, from a cool idea to a place where elephants and giraffes graze only a matter of yards away from bison, bears, and alligators. Then I am going to give you a quick verbal tour of the zoo and what you may see there.
