Attorney, mentor, and coach Sabrina Shaheen Cronin joins Bethany on the show discussing a massive topic of navigating the waters of separation, divorce, and co-parenting.
Before they get to that though, the first part of the episode is talking about habits to build a strong marriage and getting on the same page financially. Here are some sample questions Sabrina suggests to ask a potential spouse:

What are your values?
How much debt do you have?
Are you a spender or saver?
Do you have any medical bills or prior illness to keep in mind?
If you are blending families--how are you going to treat your children vs how they treat your children when it comes to gift giving, extracurricular activities, etc.

Sometimes people might be forthcoming with values or even their income, so it is important to look for clues during those dating days. Sabrina talks bout how it is important to know where the bank accounts are, how much money is in the accounts, and not take it for granted that your spouse will pay all the bills. It is important for both people in a relationship to be involved, hands on and aware of your finances and business.

As Mamas, we all face the wide spectrum of medical incidents with our children. Wether it be a scrape or cut, fever, allergic reaction, or worse, it is hard to know when to call the doctor or if it warrants a trip to the ER.
On today's episode, 12 year nurse and mama of twins Kristen O'Brien joins us to talk through several different medical scenarios and how to react. She and Bethany discuss common visits for fevers, recognizing an allergic reaction, common medications given, frequent injuries in kids, as well as what to call the pediatrician/doctor for versus go to urgent care or go to the ER.

Documents Needed After Having a Child Pt. 1: Life Insurance Jul 05, 2022

Today on The Motherhood and Money Show, we have our very own social media manager Rebecca Salgado! Rebecca also happens to be a health advocacy attorney in California.
Today Bethany and Rebecca go over documents you need after having a child. This is part one in a two part series where they will be covering Life Insurance. Next week they will cover Estate Planning (will, trust, appointing a guardian to care for your children, advanced healthcare directive, and power of attorney for financial decisions).

Rebecca goes over the two main types term and whole. Term is for a specific amount of time like 10 years. Whole life generally lasts your entire life. Beware with whole life insurance policies because if you’re late or miss a payment it could invalidate the entire policy, meaning your beneficiaries get nothing.

Everyone’s personal situation varies, but generally people are better off getting term life and building their investments. Usually 150 a month to an investment account will provide better financial security than the risk that comes with a whole life insurance policy.

Going through Insurance
Ask your HR about something called an EAP (Employee Assistance Program). These programs will often cover a certain amount of sessions or help pay for therapy sessions for their employees.
Look into non-profits and low fee clinics in your area (Ex Cancer Support Community)
Pre-lisenced Mental Health Professional: Local colleges and Universities might offer inexpensive therapy, sometimes even as low as $1. In these cases, it is common to find less expensive therapy because the therapists are still in training. The upside is that these therapists in training also have trained supervisors who are able to offer input, and they often have smaller case loads.
Ask your therapist if they have a Sliding Scale fee. This is a system where the therapist might adjust their hourly fee to help make therapy more affordable.
Group therapy or support groups are also a great options that can be cheaper than traditional one-on-one therapy. The other benefit to group therapy is that you already have a built-in support system with the other members who attend.
Student in college or community college may offer free therapy through on-campus counseling center.
Online therapy. With the pandemic came a wealth of online therapy options. BetterHelp, TalkSpace, and Headway are just a few options.

Medical bills can be expensive, and sometimes they can even devastate your finances if you weren't ready for them.
Justine Nelson from Debt Free Millennials joins Bethany on the show today to talk about how she received a 30% discount on her medical bill from giving birth and practical steps on how you can negotiate any medical bill.
Why is it important to try to negotiate? Hospital services are heavily inflated. Hospital costs are not transparent. Insurance companies can negotiate what they'll pay with hospitals, why can't the consumer?
Here are a Justine's practical steps you can take to negotiate your bills:

Review your bill - Ask for an itemized bill
Question anything that looks inaccurate or doesn't make sense - (two line items for vaginal delivery - one was for the midwife's care and the other was for the actual room)
Calculate out the discounted price ahead of time - Start with 40% discount, calculate for 35, 30, 25% so you can quickly negotiate a different cost
Use a script - "I'm calling about my outstanding balance and would like to take care of that today." - "If I pay $XX today, will my account be considered paid in full?"
Ask for a confirmation number - Ask how long it takes for your account balance to be cleared and paid in full

The Importance of Mental Health for Moms Feb 08, 2022

Welcome back to another season of The Motherhood and Money Show!

It is so wonderful to be back with Season 2 of The Motherhood and Money Show! On today’s episode, I am talking about something that is incredibly important to me and a topic I would like to normalize even more: the importance of mental health as moms and women. As moms, we carry a lot and juggle a lot of hats. Here are a few reasons why that could be:

Often the mental and emotional labor of the family falls on mom’s shoulders (The holidays is a really great example of this! See the video above).
Postpartum depression and anxiety can affect 10-20 percent of new moms (and possibly even more when it goes undetected).
Moms suffer burnout and exhaustion as they are often solidified as the default parent role. The pandemic highlighted this. Moms also tend to handle the bulk share of communication and organization in the family unit (scheduling doctors appointments, after school activities, schedules, meal planning, etc.). This is often know as emotional or invisible labor.
Becoming a new mom can already be isolating, and over time mom’s can feel a lack of identity and question who they are aside from “just Mom.”
As moms, we cannot pour from an empty cup, and checking in on our mental health is one of the best self-care practices we can do for ourselves and our family.

17. Budgeting Basics May 11, 2021

Welcome back to The Motherhood and Money Show where we are getting back to the basics this week with budgeting. In this episode we cover:
Why do we budget?:

Permission to spend
Keeps us in check as a boundary
Stress relief: know what’s coming in and out
Track financial goals
Spending on what’s important to you
Know where every dollar is going

What is a budget?:

It’s a plan for your money
Not restrictive
Personal to you: based on your lifestyle and choices and not everyone’s is going to look the same

How do you start?:

Pick a platform: paper, excel, app (Mint, YNAB, Quicken, Every Dollar, etc).
Zero-based budgeting: every dollar has a plan
List out income: variable or steady. This is what you have to work with!
List out expenses: mortgage/rent, utilities, food, etc. You can be as detailed as you want
Debts (debt snowball or debt avalanche)
Savings (sinking funds & other savings like emergency fund)
Other goals
Tracking expenses through the month vs. cash envelopes
The total of all expenses, debt and savings should equal income. If it doesn’t equal, go back and cut things or add to other categories.
If you’ve never budgeted before, take a look at the last couple months of your spending to know how much to budget for.
It takes a few months to get in the habit!

16. Flying with Babies May 04, 2021

As the world begins to open up again, so does air travel!
Bethany recently returned from her first trip with a baby and shares the good, the bad, and the not-so-helpful. 13. Saving for College: 529 Plans Apr 13, 2021

This week we go over 529s and why they are important!
Just as a disclaimer, we are not financial advisors. This is not financial advice.

Here are a few questions we answer about 529s in this episode:

Why:

College is expensive! In 18 years it could cost well over $200,000 for public in state college tuition
With using a 529, your child could go to college taking on little or no debt - which could help them in their adult future.

What:

An investment account offering tax breaks that allows you to set aside money for qualified educational expenses - like tuition, fees, books & room and board
529 named after its section in the IRS tax code

How Does It Work:

Each 529 has an account owner (often the parent) and a beneficiary (the student). The owner controls the investments.
Anyone can contribute to a 529 and there are no income or age limits on contributions.
529 contributions are made with after-tax dollars. So qualified distributions for a 529 are completely tax-free.
You can even get a tax deduction or tax credit in 35 states!

How To Set It Up:

Each state has their own pan. But you don’t need to use your state’s plan. You can go with the most affordable plan.

Fun Facts:

From tax changes in 2017, you can now use money in some 529 plans for K-12 public, private or religious school tuition. You can withdraw up to $10k per year. Though the taxes may still be owed on the earnings of this money depending on your state. But federally, this is tax free.
The SECURE Act passed in December 2019 now allows you to use 529 dollars for apprenticeships, homeschooling expenses and repayment of up to $10,000 of student loans for the beneficiary and their siblings.
What if your child doesn’t go to college or doesn’t use all the money saved in the 529? You can transfer the funds to another child or even grandchild! And if you want to use the money in a 529 for noneducational expenses, you can. But non qualified withdrawals are taxed and hit with a 10% penalty. And the person who receives the distribution pays the tax!

8. Are MLMs Good Business Decisions? Mar 09, 2021

Are Multi-Level Marketing companies good business decisions?
Before we begin this episode, the two of us here at The Motherhood and Money Show want you to know that this is a shame free space. We will always support you in whatever decisions you make for you or your family. We have your best interest at heart. We use the definition of MLM from Investopedia.com, which says, "Multilevel marketing (MLM) is a strategy some direct sales companies use to encourage existing distributors to recruit new distributors who are paid a percentage of their recruits' sales. The recruits are the distributor's 'downline.' Distributors also make money through direct sales of products to customers.'

7. How We Make Money from Home Mar 02, 2021

We are so excited to start our first series ever: Making Money March!
We often are both asked how we started our businesses, what is it we actually DO all day, and how we are able to make money from home. This month we will answer all of these questions, plus money making apps, service vs. product based businesses, and if MLMs are a good business decision.

5. Two First Time Moms Navigating a Pandemic and One Getting Covid Feb 16, 2021

Going through a pandemic is difficult. Going through it pregnant and as a FTM is especially difficult.
Marissa and Bethany talk about what it was like entering lock down in the third trimester of their pregnancies. They each relive the range of emotions they experienced while they canceled baby showers, couldn't be surrounded by friends and family, and some of the surprises they experienced before giving birth.
They also discuss the choices they each made when it came to letting family visit their new borns and how they have lived in quarantine for the last 10+ months.
Bethany also tells her story of contracting COVID. She goes over how it happened, what she may have done differently, and the feelings associated with getting the virus. She also shares the story her 8-month-old, Caden, contracting the virus and what signs to look for in infants who may need extra medical attention.
