According to legend, Stump claimed he was given a magic wolf girdle that transformed him into a bloodthirsty beast. His confession, execution, and the terrifying pamphlets that followed made him one of history’s most infamous “werewolves.”Then we travel to 18th-century France to examine the terrifying mystery of The Beast of Gevaudan, the creature blamed for the deaths of nearly 300 people between 1764 and 1767. Was it a wolf? A werewolf? A lion? Or something even stranger? We break down the eyewitness accounts, the mass panic, and the theories behind one of the most infamous monster cases in history.Along the way, we talk about how folklore turns human evil into monsters, why cultures need beasts like werewolves, and what these stories might really say about us.If you love dark history, folklore, true crime, and the real stories behind classic monsters, this one is for you.

#halloween #frankenstein Join our Parajunkie Family! www.patreon.com/hauntedcitypodcastWhat if Frankenstein wasn't entirely fiction? What if a real scientist actually made a dead body move more than 200 years ago?Welcome to the second installment of our Halloween series, The Real-Life Universal Monsters! This week on The Most Haunted City on Earth, Madison and Chris are joined by special guest Soucy Soucy to uncover the horrifying true history behind one of the most iconic monsters of all time: Frankenstein's Monster. In 1803, Italian scientist Giovanni Aldini conducted a series of disturbing experiments on the recently executed body of George Foster. Using electricity, Aldini caused the corpse's jaw to tremble, its muscles to convulse, its hand to clench, and even one of its eyes to open. Witnesses were horrified, with some believing they were watching a dead man return to life. But this was only the beginning. We explore the gruesome world of 19th-century medical experimentation, when human bodies became scientific spectacles, electricity was a mysterious new frontier, and researchers were beginning to question whether death could actually be reversed. Then we travel to the infamous summer of 1816, when a young Mary Shelley, trapped inside a Swiss villa during a season of darkness and storms, experienced the nightmare that would inspire Frankenstein. Could the terrifying experiments of scientists like Aldini have helped give birth to literature's most famous monster? From electrified corpses and anatomical theaters to the disturbing relationship between science and mortality, we're uncovering the REAL horrors behind Frankenstein.

For nearly a century, we’ve known them as monsters: Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolfman, and the Mummy. But every monster comes from somewhere. This Halloween, we’re diving into the REAL cases, folklore, and historical events behind the Universal Monsters, starting with DRACULA. 🧛

Long before Bram Stoker published Dracula in 1897, villages across Serbia were gripped by a terrifying vampire panic. People claimed the dead were returning to attack the living. Graves were opened. Bodies were found seemingly untouched by decay, with fresh blood still present. Stakes were driven through hearts, corpses were decapitated and burned, and eventually the reports became so serious that officials from the Habsburg Empire were sent to investigate.

And they documented what they found. In this episode, Madison and Chris explore the bizarre cases of Arnold Powell and Peter Blasjevic, the Serbian vampire panics of the 1720s and 1730s, the government investigations that followed, and how these stories helped introduce the vampire to Western Europe long before Count Dracula ever stepped onto the page.

We also get into vampire folklore, sleep paralysis, the strange idea of vampirism spreading like a disease, the official diagnosis of a “Vampiric Condition,” and the very real historical fears that may have helped create the vampire as we know it today.

And if you’re in Savannah October 16–18, Chris will be performing his one-man adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart at Ghost Light Theater!

Cut the lights, turn the volume up, and journey with us into The Most Haunted City on Earth.

In 1799, a voice started rising from the cellar of a farmhouse on Taunton Bay in Sullivan, Maine. It said it was Nellie Butler, a young woman who had died in childbirth three years earlier. Over the next year, more than 100 people said they heard her, and dozens said they saw her fully formed. She preached, she called out the skeptics by name, and she tried to arrange her widower's next marriage.Madison and Chris dig into what's been called America's first ghost. They cover the eyewitness accounts Reverend Abraham Cummings collected, the 48 townspeople who followed a specter across town, and a prophecy that came true. Was it really Nellie? A demon wearing her face? Mass hysteria? Or something that badly wanted to be born? Also in this episode: an accidental ghost hunt in a historic Brunswick courthouse, a Phantom Fact about the man buried in a Pringles can (and Cincinnati's flying pigs), and Chris's night at the Lizzie Borden House, where the Estes Method caught a thief red-handed.This one was recorded live with our Para Junkies. #poltergeist #truehaunting Join The Parajunkie Family on Patreon! www.patreon.com/hauntedcitypodcastOne of the most violent and strangely overlooked poltergeist cases in American history happened right here in Georgia. In 1872, the Surrency family’s quiet farmhouse suddenly erupted into chaos. Objects appeared from nowhere. Glass shattered. Furniture moved on its own. Scalding food was hurled across the dinner table. Knives, bricks, shoes, and household objects flew through the air, and eventually the activity became terrifyingly physical. The haunting attracted reporters, investigators, and hundreds of curious visitors, with witnesses claiming to see the unexplained activity firsthand. Despite the extraordinary attention it received at the time, the Surrency Poltergeist somehow faded from paranormal history. This week, we’re digging into the bizarre documented accounts, the increasingly violent attacks on the family, the theories surrounding what caused it, and why a case this extreme is not mentioned alongside America’s most famous hauntings.PLUS: a new paranormal video from the Savannah Paranormal Museum and the debut of our newest segment, Phantom Fact, featuring the surprisingly paranormal origin story of chiropractic medicine.Cut the lights, turn the volume up, and stay spooky, y’all. 👻Submit your personal ghost stories for a chance to be read on the show! ghostmail@hauntedcitypodcast.com
