    TMV: Episode 25 – Army Life – Part 1

Today, it is with excitement and a lot of other emotions that we launch into the topic of army life. We are joined by Karem Hernandez, wife of William Hernandez and mother of two, who gives us some background into her marriage. She explains that, although her husband always had a desire to follow in his grandfather’s legacy, she was reluctant for him to join the army. God, however, had other plans and ultimately led them down this path. Karem talks us through some of the challenges that her family and many other army families face, such as the hardships of being separated, having little control over deployments, and frequent moving. She also talks about how to rely on God and keep your marriage strong through these trials. She has great advice for army wives, and wives in general, on the importance of making decisions together, staying together, and keeping the romance alive through the separation and the hard times, so make sure to tune in today!

    Discipline – Part 4 Apr 28, 2021
    Show notes

    TMV: Episode 24 – Discipline – Part 4

Today we complete our series on discipline by talking about how to disciple middle schoolers and high schoolers. We discuss the new challenges that come with this age group as they have more leeway, more independence, more external influences, and more opportunities to stumble into sin. We acknowledge the issue of brain development and how this can sometimes create challenges, especially in middle school-aged boys. We talk about how, as the stakes get higher, conversations around the issues that arise do tend to become more heated, and there are times when we, as parents, need to apologize to our kids. We are also given opportunities to talk to our kids about our own struggles with sin, and demonstrate that, as their mistakes don’t change our love for them, our mistakes don’t change God’s love for us. We finish it off by broaching the tricky subject of teens and dating, and how to help our kids manage their own sexuality in line with God’s purpose for marriage. Tune in today!

    Key Points:

    • Listener question: How do you implement boundaries with a family member who is trying to discipline your children?
    • A recap of the first three parts of the series.
    • An introduction to today’s topic: disciplining middle schoolers and high schoolers.
    • The new challenges that come with this age group.
    • Why you shouldn’t act shocked when they fall.
    • How you can begin to share your own struggles; they are now old enough to understand.
    • Opportunities to demonstrate that your love for them doesn’t change when they sin and neither does God’s.
    • A sin is a lesson, not a life sentence.
    • When and how to apologize to teenagers: never ask for forgiveness with a ‘but’!
    • Why it is sometimes okay to ask for a ‘re-do’.
    • How to help them get back on track with God’s purpose in mind.
    • You can nudge them in a direction, but sometimes you must trust the Holy Spirit to do His job.
    • How to help your middle schooler and high schooler be disciplined in the world of dating.
    • The need for another episode on the topic of teens and dating.

Today we bring you part three of our series on discipline. In this episode, we build on the foundation we’ve already established in our talks on disciplining younger children, and we move on to discuss how to discipline elementary school-aged kids. We reaffirm the importance of discipline and maintaining the goal of using discipline, not to control your kids, but to point them to God. We discuss how disciplining our children takes self-discipline, and the importance of remaining consistent even when it’s inconvenient, which becomes even more vital when raising elementary school-aged children. We talk about creating the right relationship and environment for hard conversations, the importance of timing, and the benefits of positive touch. Hear a number of personal stories from our own experiences as moms, and learn some practical tips to make sure your kids hear you when it matters most. Tune in today!

TMV: Episode 22 – Full Circle Parenting

Today we are joined by Kristin’s husband and Family Church pastor, Jimmy Scroggins, to discuss the new book that they have written together: Full Circle Parenting: A Guide for Crucial Conversations. As the parents of eight children, they share some of the wisdom they have picked up over the years through mentors, books, and their own experiences. Though many people write books that claim to provide a formula for good parenting, Jimmy and Kristin believe that there is no formula. Instead, they suggest that good parenting is about having millions of gospel-centered conversations. They offer their book as a road map to help parents navigate their way through these conversations. They discuss how the theology of sin and redemption applies to parenting, and how your job is to ‘stay in the game’ and constantly point your kids back to God. We also discuss the idea of ‘complexity’ and how if your child is struggling with sin, that doesn’t negate the presence of God in their lives. Tune in for all this and more!

    Key Points:

    • A definition of ‘Full-Circle Parenting’ and how it relates to the three circles of gospel, marriage, and family.
    • What qualifies Kristin and Jimmy to write a book on parenting.
    • The book is an alternative to other books that offer formulas as there is no formula.
    • An introduction to the concept that good parenting is about millions of conversations.
    • The book is a road map to navigate through these conversations.
    • What Kristin and Jimmy learned about themselves through the writing process.
    • Kristin’s favorite chapter: Friendship and Mean Kids.
    • Jimmy’s favorite chapter: Bitterness and Forgiveness.
    • The most difficult chapter to write: Managing Technology.
    • How the theology of sin and redemption applies to parenting.
    • How the Scroggins kids responded to the book.
    • How watching their kids raise their grandchildren is a great indicator of their parenting skills.
    • How the book writing process affected their marriage.
    • The idea of ‘complexity’: How your child’s struggle with sin does not negate the presence of God in their life.
    • Parenting is a lifelong pursuit and the importance of ‘staying in the game’.

Tuning in, you will hear about when and how we discipline our children and how discipline can take on different forms, but the key is consistency! Stay tuned for all this and more!

    Discipline – Part 1 Mar 24, 2021
    Show notes

    TMV: Episode 20 – Discipline – Part 1

Discipline is a foundational pillar of parenthood, and as mothers, it is our duty to child guide our children closer to God. In part one of our multi-episode series on discipline, a topic we get asked about a lot, we dive into what discipline means. There are so many people out there who claim to have a set number of steps to help you discipline your children. While there are some practical tools you can use that we will share in episodes to come, we need to view discipline through God’s eyes. When we see just how blessed we are to be mothers who shepherd our beautiful children closer to the Lord, we understand that discipline is the sum of a series of small actions and that it requires patience, commitment, and consistency. In this episode, we each weigh in with our discipline-related thoughts, talk about the importance of leading by example and nourishing our spiritual lives, and why it is vital to talk about a plan of action long before you come against some difficulty with your children. Remember, you are not in conflict with your children when there are struggles; it is a battle of the soul, so always come back to just what an honor it is to be an ambassador for the Lord because you get to steward your family closer to Him.

    Key Points:

    • There is not a set number of steps to discipline your kids, but theology always helps.
    • The importance of having a plan about discipline and drawing your kids closer to God.
    • It is easy for us to get lost and forget our purpose as mothers.
    • Knowing the reason our children do not obey helps us see the behavior compassionately.
    • Our children are lost and they need help finding a savior.
    • As moms, we have to take care of our spiritual lives to see the blessing of motherhood.
    • Discipline starts early on; think about sleep training to ensure you have a marriage-centered home.
    • Parenting and disciplining are tiring but consistency pays off in the long-term.
    • When times get tough as a mom, remember just what a blessing motherhood truly is.
    • Start talking with your husbands about discipline when you are pregnant.
    • All the choices you make for your family are underpinned by discipline.
    • Parenting is a good and perfect gift, so do not outsource it to other people.
