For those of you who are regular listeners to our podcast, you know how much we love our movies, and how much we love our sports. You can only imagine what happens to our inner enjoyment when those two things are combined…enter in sports movies! And one of the first sports movies that come to my mind isn’t actually just one film, it’s many…The Rocky series. I’ve gone way more than 15 rounds with these movies easily, but there’s one film in this series that actually has some unknown historic origins. I’m sure you’re thinking of Rocky 4 when Rocky fought Ivan Drago during the Cold War, but that’s not what I’m referencing. It has to do with the 2006 film Rocky Balboa and it’s odd, but actually historic premise behind the plot of the film. Find out what historic context this contains and how this impacted not one but 2 boxing legends on this episode of the Missing Chapter.

Well, there’s one nickname that has a cloud of mystery around it with no distinct answer. But today, we’re going to talk about the most credible historical reason behind one of the most iconic sports nicknames…the Hoosiers. Oil-Inclusive Vacation Feb 26, 2022
    Show notes

When someone says “dream vacation” - what’s the first thing that comes to mind - warm, sandy beach, crashing waves, private island, nighttime entertainment, great food. Well, maybe you’re a history buff like we are and want to go somewhere with all of those dream-vacation characteristics with some history mixed in. That’s the best of both worlds, right? Well then, the next time your family wants to venture out onto a private island vacation, why not shoot for the Neft Dashlari, in Russia. This grand, floating city spectacle is filled with all the amenities…a movie theater, soccer fields, lemonade factory, tree-dotted park…oh, and one other part I forgot to mention, it just so happens to be a Soviet-era floating Oil Rig under Joseph Stalin. So it may not be your top vacation choice, but it’s the topic of discussion on this episode of the Missing Chapter.

The Atomic Age Feb 19, 2022

From an early age, Theodore Alvin Hall, had shown an astonishing mind for mathematics and physics. In 1940, Hall had scored some of the highest marks ever on the entrance examination at Columbia University. Due to extenuating circumstances, however, he was not allowed to enroll. Hall was not deterred. He went on to attend Queen’s College in New York and would transfer 2 years later to Harvard, where his professors were so impressed with his grades, he was allowed to bypass the first year of his course.

While at Harvard, Hall immersed himself in relativity and quantum mechanics and even received a special scholarship for his groundbreaking work. He became the star pupil of Professor John Van Vleck, one of America’s leading experts in quantum theory.

By 1942, Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany were expanding throughout mainland Europe will relative ease and unbeknownst to Hall, Van Vleck had been secretly recruited by the U.S. government to help with the most sensitive undertaking in the country’s history; a project so important, the future of the free world hung in the balance. Van Vleck would look to ultimately sway the momentum of the war in favor of the Allied forces by adding his star pupil to his team, while at the time, Theodore Alvin Hall was only 18 years old.

    Shellshock Sabotage Feb 05, 2022
    Show notes

Lyndhurst, New Jersey, formerly known as Kingsland, is a township of about 22,000 people in the Meadowlands. It’s what some would consider a nice, ordinary Jersey community. However, what many might not know about Lyndhurst is that it was not only home to about 22,000 people, it housed the Canadian Car and Foundry Plant, which would be used as a fairly large munitions factory. And this inconspicuous munitions factory ended up playing a fairly significant role in WWI, but the bigger story is that it became the target of one of the worst acts of foreign sabotage to ever take place on American soil. Find out what happened and who we are to blame for this explosive sabotage on this episode of the Missing Chapter.

The internet is flooded with unfounded stories and fake news. Many of these disguise themselves in memes or as short anecdotes on the stage of social media. It makes it difficult – challenging – to decipher what is true and what is fiction. You may have seen one of these claims regarding a woman by the name of Judith Love Cohen. Her story, as it would turn out, is one that even a Hollywood set would have a tough time conjuring up. Listen in for more on this person and a surprising twist on this Missing Chapter Short.

    Game Changer Jan 22, 2022
    Show notes

Many clichés have made their way through the airwaves over the years. All starting off the same way…as a catchy, trendy slogan, then transforming into nails on a chalkboard every time you hear the same cliché over and over again. Well, the cliché “game-changer” is not an exception to this rule, but this time, we’re actually using it in its literal sense. On this episode of the Missing Chapter, we’re going sports history, specifically basketball. And as the game of basketball has changed and evolved, one could argue that this idea turned rule, is what really did change the game for years to come.

Flight of Redemption Jan 15, 2022
    Show notes

The plane jarred violently as it climbed into the gray February night sky, but the 95 passengers onboard were not dismayed. After being grounded an additional 3 hours for severe weather, some were already asleep, and all were excited to be leaving snowy and icy New York on their way to beautiful, sunny Miami, Florida on February 1st, 1957.

Northeast Airlines Flight 823 had taxied off the runway at LaGuardia Airport less than a minute earlier and was beginning its ascent with captain Alvin Marsh at the controls and co-pilot Basil Dixwell by his side. The stewardesses had not yet had the chance to offer beverages from the drink cart, and the ice and wind was pelting the south-bound flight, when Dixwell suddenly screamed, “Al, ground coming up!” But it was too late. Flight 823, wavered like a bird with a crippled wing, before crashing violently into a patch of trees. Less than 60 seconds after taking off, it lay, with both wings ripped off and on fire, on a small plot of land just south of the airport. That parcel of land – was Rikers Island – home to one of the most notorious prisons in the country. This gripping story is our focus on this Missing Chapter Short.
