    Show notes

Did you know that the oil and gas industry is not the only industry that uses underground injection wells. As mineral and royalty owners, it is helpful to understand the difference between a saltwater disposal well and a water injection well used for enhanced oil recovery. MRP 150: Colorado's New Financial Assurance Rules with Neil Ray Apr 21, 2022
    Show notes

In this episode, Justin and I interview Neil Ray with CAMRO. We discuss the new Colorado Oil and Gas Financial Assurance regulations that just went into effect. If you're not familiar with what financial assurance is, it is the process of operators putting up money to ensure that the state isn't left footing the bill for plugging and abandoning wells in case the company goes out of business. This is just one part of the overarching changes to the way that oil and gas is regulated in the state of Colorado.

This topic is important because even if you don't have minerals in the state, other progressive states could adopt similar measures. These new financial assurance rules may make it difficult for small producers to meet the requirements which is important because according to the IPAA, there are about 9,000 independent oil and natural gas producers in the US. These are the small mom and pop operators that employ an average of just 12 people. These companies produce 83 percent of America's oil and 90 percent of America's natural gas.

MRP 149: Are Oil Companies Holding Back Production? What we Learned from the Big Oil Hearing Apr 14, 2022
    Show notes

The U.S. House of Representatives recently held a hearing titled "Gouged at the Gas Station: Big Oil and America's Pain at the Pump" where they grilled six oil company CEO's about the recent increase in gasoline prices. While this hearing was mostly political grandstanding and lacked much substance, we break down the implications of what was said and what might be holding back companies from increasing oil production in 2022.

MRP 148: We React to the Proposed Big Oil Windfall Profits Tax Apr 07, 2022
    Show notes

It's true, energy companies have been profitable lately...to the tune of an 8.3% profit in 2021. Yup, the only segment worse than energy was consumer staples with a profit margin of 6.6%. Yet here we are talking about windfall profits. In this episode we break down this proposal and how it is not only not a profits tax but will have the exact opposite effect on energy prices than what is intended.

In this episode I interview Jim Crompton, oil and gas industry expert, professor at the Colorado School of Mines, and owner Reflections Data Consulting, LLC. He is also an instructor at Top Energy Training which helps educate regulators, inspectors, policymakers, and oil & gas industry professionals so that they can develop informed public policy and regulations around complex issues in the oil and gas industry, like orphan wells.

We discuss all aspects of the orphan wells issue, from the size of the problem, advancements in technology that may help industry better prioritize the abandoned wells that require attention, what landowners should do if they find an abandoned well on their property, and incentive mechanisms that might help solve this problem.

    Show notes

Orphan wells are oil and gas wells that are no longer producing or economically viable but have not gone through the plugging process and usually don't have an owner. They present potential safety and environmental concerns as well as an enormous cost to properly plug and abandon the hundreds of thousands of wells in the United States. In this episode, we discuss some possible solutions to this problem and what surface owners can do if you have an orphan well on your property.

MRP 142: What U.S. LNG Exports Mean for Gas Prices Feb 25, 2022
    Show notes

The U.S. becoming the largest LNG exporter in 2021 with a peak capacity of 10.8 Bcf/day, provides a new outlet for domestic natural gas production. This should provide support to natural gas prices in the U.S. and as a result will benefit royalty owners.

In this episode, we discuss this and the recent letter from New England senators asking the DOE to limit LNG exports to prevent gas prices from rising further. Instead, we talk about how supply and demand will help naturally balance out prices and how LNG exports can be used to support our allies in Europe from Russian natural gas supply disruptions.
