E225 - Castle & Key Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon Jan 31, 2025

Show notes

The Castle & Key Distillery opened its doors in 2018 after years of careful planning and restoration. The castle like distillery was originally called the Old Taylor Distillery and was built in 1887 by none other than Colonel EH Taylor. The distillery grounds are amongst the most picturesque in the bluegrass which is why this has become on of the most popular places to tour. After initially releasing Vodka, Gin, and other spirits, the first bourbon was bottled in 2022 to much fanfare. Even though we never did an episode on it, we were in agreement that wasn't our favorite. Fast forward to this episode where we crack and review Castle & Key's Cask Strength Wheated Bourbon. Coming in at just 105 proof and being a true small batch whiskey (only 100 barrels in the blend), we were eager to see if this offering was better than the initial bourbon that was released. You'll have to listen to hear what we think. In this episode, Anthony talks about a barrel pick, Kenny treats us to some beatboxing, and Steven breaks out a special voice from the old west. Thank you for giving us a listen!

E223 - 7 Year Old Bourbon Blind Jan 24, 2025

Show notes

Did you think we were going to take some time off from blinding after the best of 2024? Not a chance. One night about a month ago, Steven sent a message to our group text and asked if any of us have ever had the newer age stated 7 year Beam. After a skeptical response from Kenny, an idea was born. We decided to do a blind of 7 year old bourbons. The bottles in this blind are: Old Louisville 7 year bourbon/Premier Drams 7 year bourbon/Jim Beam 7 Year bourbon/Heaven Hill Bib 7 year/Nashville Barrel Co. 7 year bourbon/Old Ezra 7 Year. Which bottle came out on top? Leave us a comment before you listen and give us a listen to find out who came out on top. Cheers!

E222 - Elkwood Reserve 15 Year Bourbon Jan 21, 2025

Show notes

How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop? Is it Buffalo Trace? Is it Wild Turkey? The world may never know. Well, even if the world may never know, we are still going to try the whiskey and give you our honest opinion. For this week, we taste and review a single barrel selection by Banner's X The Paddock Bourbon Club of 15 year old Elkwood Reserve Bourbon. Elkwood Reserve is a brand that Bluegrass Distillers has used to release much of this mystery bourbon that shares lineage between two major distilleries. You've heard us talk about it for some time, now it's time to hear what we think. Join us as we decode what is going wrong for Steven at the Chick-fil-A drive thru and also give our opinions on this very sought after distillate.

E219 - Chattanooga Whiskey 12th Anniversary Blend Jan 10, 2025

Show notes

It's hard to believe that Chattanooga Whiskey has been around for almost 13 years. Each year, they release a "Founder's Anniversary Blend" which celebrates whiskey from their past, present, and future. For this week, we taste and review the 2024 release of this bottle (12th Anniversary Blend). This bottle was graciously provided to us by a listener and we are grateful for that. So how does this one taste? It's very unique, like nothing we've ever tasted before. But is that a good or bad thing? You'll have to listen to find out. Join us this week as we talk about digging out of the storm, the heel of bread, and of course, bourbon.

E218 - Prideful Goat 15 Year Bourbon Jan 07, 2025

Show notes

Prideful Goat is a whiskey brand that was founded in 2020 by a popular podcast host and the head of the Houston Bourbon Society. Since then, the brand has grown exponentially and gained a pretty solid following. Thanks to one of our listeners (Ryan), we were able to try batch # 4 of Prideful Goat's 15 Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. For all intents and purposes, this was the whiskey that started it all for the brand. Give us a listen to hear what we thought of it. By the way, this episode barely happened thanks to a rude visit by mother nature to the commonwealth.

E217 - Colonel E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof Rye Jan 03, 2025

Show notes

Colonel E. H. Taylor, Jr. Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey is the 13th release to join the famed E. H. Taylor Collection from the Buffalo Trace Distillery. This rye is uncut and unfiltered. Even though little is known about the age or mashbill of this whiskey, it comes in at a whooping 126 proof. This release has been rumored for many years, but the fact that it is finally here is very exciting. However, the reviews on this one have been incredibly mixed with some expressing love and others describing it as lackluster. What do we think? You'll have to listen to find out. Once again, we are joined by our good friend Jason from Arsenic Culture. This episode is loaded with laughs and is definitely one of the most honest whiskey reviews that you're gonna hear all week long.

E216 - Redwood Empire Haystack Needle Single Barrel Bourbon Dec 31, 2024

Show notes

Redwood Empire gained notoriety early on by sourcing and bottling some excellent whiskey. Nestled in the heart of wine country on the Russian River in California, these distillers recently released 8 year cask strength single barrels of their own distillate. For this weeks short, we taste and review one of these bottles compliments of our good friend (and listener), Andrew. Even though this episode is a shorty, it's chock full of Mash Up goodness. Though you'll have to listen to find out what we think of this bottle, the future does look bright for Redwood Empire. Happy New Year!
