My guest this week on the podcast is Mason Via. It took four quick years for Mason Via to become one of the newest leaders of modern-day American roots music. During that whirlwind period, he toured the world as a member of Old Crow Medicine Show, earned a Grammy nomination for his work on the band's chart-topping album Jubilee, contributed songs to Grammy Winning and Nominated records by Molly Tuttle and Del McCoury Band, and released his solo debut, New Horizons. The momentum continues with Mason Via, a self-titled solo record that balances the progressive with the timeless, reintroducing Mason as a southern storyteller and sharp-eyed singer/songwriter steeped in the bluegrass tradition.

My guest this week on the podcast is Bonnie Sims. Platinum recording artist Bonnie Sims grew up on bluegrass music in Texas, with a professional banjo player for a father and a family band from a young age. She studied commercial music at South Plains College under Joe Carr & Alan Munde (Country Gazette) and double majored in mandolin and singing/yodeling. After graduating she moved to Colorado where she has had over a decade of success in projects with her husband, Taylor: Bonnie & Taylor Sims Band, Everybody Loves An Outlaw, Bonnie & the Clydes, and most recently the female supergroup Big Richard which has given Bonnie the opportunity to simultaneously return to her roots and defy tradition, two things she enjoys immensely.

Big Richard’s new album is called “Girl Dinner” and it is available everywhere and it is also available on vinyl HERE!

My guest this week is Emily Wilson. Emily is a great mandolin player and instructor, who also happens to be the caretaker of Lloyd Loar mandolin #71839 also known as the Karasik Mandolin. There’s a good chance you may have seen Emily at a festival or gathering with this instrument. She has started up The Karasik Mandolin Project. The Karasik Mandolin Project’s goal is to preserve Ely Karasik’s January 5th, 1923 Lloyd Loar-Signed F5 Gibson #71839. While doing this, I also wish to to share the instrument with a variety of mandolinists that would otherwise not have access to a Lloyd Loar. This has been done by taking the mandolin to festivals, events and concerts, and getting video footage of the mandolin being played. The videos have been released on a weekly basis since January 2022.

My guest this week is an absolute legend in the acoustic instrument world. His instruments have graced the cover of David Grisman’s Quintet ‘80 and been displayed in the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. John Monteleone has been pushing the luthiery envelope for more than forty years with his refreshing passion for new and elegant designs. Producing instruments of great tonal expression is also one of Monteleone’s missions in life. A dedication to the refined harmonic balances of tone and playability is always the central nucleus of structural foundation around which he often introduces the more interesting design accents and playful nature of his original and beautiful works.
