This week's guest is mandolin legend Andy Statman!

Andy Statman, one of his generation's premier mandolinists and clarinetists, thinks of his compositions and performances as "spontaneous American-roots music and personal, prayerful hasidic music, by way of avant-garde jazz." This modest man takes for granted that a performer might embody several worlds in his art, and seems humbled by the fact that his music, like his story, is extraordinary. This week's guest is Lauren Price of The Price Sisters!

Music has always had a resounding presence in the lives of twin sisters Lauren Price Napier and Leanna Price. Growing up, both of their parents sang traditional and old-time country songs. As the sisters grew up hearing duet harmony, they naturally became accustomed to singing together themselves. Lauren and Leanna were gifted instruments for their eighth birthday and began taking lessons at age nine, though they didn’t take as strong an interest in bluegrass music specifically until their mid-high school years. The girls then began attending as many festivals and workshops as possible. Both were recipients of Bill Vernon Memorial Scholarships at the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival in 2014 and attended the annual IBMA conference for the first time that fall. In 2017, Lauren and Leanna each completed their Bachelor degrees in Traditional Music from Morehead State University.

You can find Lauren on Facebook and Instagram and be sure to also follow The Price Sisters at their Website, their Facebook and their Instagram

    Show notes

This week's guest is Marla Fibish.

A San Francisco native, Marla is one of the prominent voices of the mandolin in Irish music. She brings a deep and distinctive sensibility to the tradition on one of its lesser-heard instruments. She is a dynamic performer and a sought after teacher. Her playing is featured on the 2017 Noctambule release A Sweetish Tune, on the eponymous Three Mile Stone recording with San Francisco favorites, fiddler Erin Shrader and guitarist Richard Mandel, and on The Morning Star, a duo CD with legendary Irish singer and bouzouki player Jimmy Crowley released in 2011 — an all instrumental project that features Irish music on an array of mandolin-family instruments: mandolin, mandola, mandocello, bouzouki, and dordan. She has performed and taught nationally and in Ireland, and was a featured performer at the 2018 Masters of Tradition festival in Bantry, Co. Cork. S1E28 - Mandolins and Beer Podcast Episode #28 Andrew Collins Feb 12, 2020
    Show notes

This week's guest on the podcast is Andrew Collins!

Mando maestro Andrew Collins finds himself – through no actual fault of his own – at the epicentre of Canada’s burgeoning acoustic/roots music scene. He didn’t invent it – but he's certainly been a contributor, having co-founded seriously noteworthy Canadian bands like the Creaking Tree String Quartet, the Foggy Hogtown Boys and, more recently, his namesake Trio. That’s not to mention the fact that this prolific, robust performer – comfortable on mandolin, fiddle, guitar, mandola and mandocello – composes, produces, arranges, writes and teaches across multiple genres, including a popular collision of folk, jazz, bluegrass, celtic, and classical.

You can find more out about Andrew by going to his WEBSITE or by following him on INSTAGRAM

He also mentions Kevin Breit on the podcast so here is a link to his WEBSITE

Thanks again to Caleb Edwards for sending over his new single! Check out Caleb HERE.

And last but not least.....thanks to the MANDOLIN CAFE
