The Mana Pool — Games & Hobbies
The Mana Pool

Chewie, Mike, Brian, and Dirk have been talking about Magic: The Gathering on the internet for almost 10 years (at the time of this writing). Since there are so many shows about strategy and tournaments, these dorks focus on all the fun you can have with the game outside of that, from flavor to philosophy to game design to history to whatever else we can come up with. We’re funny, we’re serious about what we do, and we love it!

Episode 505 - Dominaria: Layers of Goodness Apr 15, 2018

Show notes

Dominaria is absolutely insane. The set is good on SO. MANY. LEVELS. The cards are good and interesting. The flavor is delicious. The nostalgia levels are through the roof, but not to the exclusion of fun and ease of understanding (looking at you, Time Spiral). And there's even another layer below that, for the hardcore and old-school MTG fans. The full set was conveniently revealed the day we recorded this, so we're just bouncing around calling out awesome cards.

We also spend the beginning of the episode thanking some extremely generous fans for a series of unrelated gifts. Tenthtechpriest, Stark Maximum, SogekingUsopp, and Stijn Meganck - you guys are amazing and we appreciate everything!

Episode 503 - The Epic Mad Lib Apr 01, 2018

Show notes

This one should be a lot of fun! We've got Eric of Many Names with us for the first time in far too long! He's pretty awesome, which is why he's here of course. Brian's got a really long mad lib for us, but he assures us it will be totally worth it. Since it's extra long we'll be giving him card names throughout the episode while we talk about even more sweet Dominaria cards! More sagas, sweet flavor text, awesome art...I can't wait to go back home!

The Mana Pool #501 - Dominaria & the History of MTG Leaks Mar 18, 2018

Show notes

As we mentioned briefly at the beginning of 500, the release notes for Dominaria were accidentally released early. Bill (you know, that guy on Monday Night Magic) joins us to talk about it. Don't worry, we're spoiler-free here! The dorks go over the removal of the Planeswalker Redirection Rule, the upcoming templating changes, and the sweet first card reveal, Phyrexian Scriptures.

From there, Brian rants about how Wizards of the Coast handled this leak. From there we take a look back at the notable leaks of the past, all the way back to the year 2000, and how WotC handled them. These leaks cover everything from IP theft to packaging errors to ENTIRE SET LEAKS to WotC oopsies.

Also, the MTG Arena NDA lifts soon, but Chewie still isn't in the beta. If he gets in there will be content of some sort. Probably.

And finally, JungleRatRob has done another audio clip montage for us! Look for it on the website soon!

The Mana Pool #500 - Magic Jeopanaria! Mar 11, 2018

Show notes

Note: We livestreamed the entire episode complete with dork face cams, so if you want to watch that then check out the YouTube link down below.

This is it! Episode 500! We're celebrating with a full-on live stream game show. Due to legal reasons, we're calling it Jeopanaria! Our game show host is none other than Magic Judge and robotics guy Jake Janssens (@ZueluGaming), who just happened to have a full-blown Jeopanaria! game ready to go. And he offered to run it for us for the show! And it was AWESOME!

After the exciting end to the game, we spent a long while just talking about 500 episodes and doing an impromptu Q&A with the Twitch chat. It was awesome, and I want to thank you all for coming to hang out for this episode! It's extra long, but what would you expect from a 500th episode spectacular?

Episode 498 - Magic: The Video Gamening Feb 25, 2018

Show notes

Magic is venturing out into video games again! With Arena, a MOBA, and an MMO all in the works, we started wondering what other flavors of video games Magic would fit into. It turns out MTG fits into almost anything, from city building to fighting to 4X grand strategy to kart racing, with plenty of others besides. This is a fun one you guys!

Because we're talking about many different video game genres, I asked Cap, whose name really is Stephen Rogers, to join us. He's from the Lair of Lore, primarily focusing on streaming a ridiculous number of games on Twitch. Like a lot.

Oh yeah, we covered all the stuff in the Valentine's Day Mini-Announcement Day too.

Episode 497 - Topical Medley Feb 18, 2018

Show notes

This episode is all over the place with a series of topical...topics. Ahem.

The dorks are showcasing several of the segments we do here on the show, beginning with the always-adorable Sam Quiz. We've also got a Magic Mad Lib (consequence-free this time) and an Ixalan block Story Circle! And if all that wasn't enough, we've also got a discussion about the addition of Jace the Mind Sculptor and Bloodbraid Elf to Modern! What an episode!

Episode 496 - Instant Worldbuilding Feb 11, 2018

Show notes

We all love the Magic Mad Libs, right? We rattle off some cards, we get a funny story, we laugh, and that's it, right? But what if our Mad Lib was actually hiding something from us? What if...there were consequences?

In the aftermath of our Mad Lib, we're building a new set! With some stipulations coming from the Mad Lib itself, it's up to the dorks to figure out how to make this random nonsense work together in a way that isn't completely ridiculous. And you know what? We actually did a good job with it! Be sure to let us know what you think about our set and how you would have done it!
