Episode 593 - Shrines & Stuff Jun 21, 2020

Show notes

New Shrines! Sure there are lots of other neat cards too, but new Shrines! There are new card versions of old characters, which is pretty awesome. We get to see more of Teferi's family. There are lots of doggos and kitty-kitties! Bronto-Dave is back! There are neat twists on old standard effects (Traitorous Greed is really cool)! There are some SWEET new goblins if that's your thing! There are some nifty brain-bending pieces of art alongside nifty brain-bending card text!

But really, none of that matters. Because NEW SHRINES!

Episode 592 - The Good Boys & the Ugly Underbelly Jun 14, 2020

Show notes

Hey we're back! We took a couple weeks off, first to do a non-podcast chatting stream and then out of respect for the Black Lives Matter movement. By the way, Black Lives Matter. Also, Trans Rights are Human Rights. Got that?

The dorks are first concerned for Dirk, who just hadn't responded to any of our attempts to contact him when he didn't show up for the recording. Then we cover the recent racism concerns that have come to light about Wizards of the Coast, including their decision to remove card images from Gatherer and straight-up ban a handful of potentially problematic cards.

So then we get to move over to the Core Set 2021 previews! Because yes, it's preview time again! There's a lot of neat stuff in here, so let's spend the rest of the episode having fun checking out all the new cards and reprints! AND SO MANY DOGGOS!

Oh, and Dirk did finally reappear, so you can stop worrying about him.

Episode 591 - The Three Tarkirs May 24, 2020

Show notes

The dorks are back with another edition of There's No Plane Like Home! This time we're taking a look at everyone's favorite (?) time-travel affected plane, Tarkir. Tarkir is based on various real-world Asian countries, so the physical aspects of the plane don't really change through the versions.

Of course, when you're hopping through timelines, it's not really the physical world you're worried about. In the past you're at war with the dragons and are in danger of getting eaten. In the Dragons timeline you're subservient to your dragon overlords. And in the Khans timeline...well that's actually not so bad. The one thing that is consistent throughout all timelines is that the Sultai... are just awful. The worst.

Episode 590 - Not the Bees! (Heirs of Trivester) May 10, 2020

Show notes

We now return to Trivester for another installment of Brian's custom MTG RPG! After the last installment's massive exposition dump Karim, Alaric, and the Angel are off to track down someone else that might have some idea what's going on. Along the way we'll be accosted by various critters that could potentially want to kill us. And of course, our beloved soldier boy really has a hang-up about fighting animals. Even when they're killer bees with little swords and shields!

After we're done with the RPG bit the final thoughts turn back to current events. You have been warned.

Episode 589 - I'm Not Going Out to Take Pictures Apr 26, 2020

Show notes

The dorks head back to the Ikoria Card Image Gallery to take a look at all the weird stuff this plane has going on. We begin, of course, with the actual Sharknado. From there we find more shark things, a ridiculous number of mashed-up creatures (like a Porcuparrot and a Tigorilla), and the usual assortment of neat spells, stories told through cards, and assorted other weirdness.

I'm still not going outside to take pictures of ANY of these critters!

Episode 588 - Companions and Ultimatums Apr 19, 2020

Show notes

The dorks are back on Ikoria! Since time is forever limited we weren't able to take a look at the ENTIRE set, but we did hit a lot of the high points. Brian is blown away by the Triomes (for some reason), the new cycle of wedge Ultimatums are pretty amazing, and the rest of the Companions are bizarrely entertaining. Then we circle around and hit the rest of the Mythic Rares that we hadn't covered yet and called it a night.

On the next episode we're gonna come back to Ikoria and take a look at all the bizarre nonsense that's going on in this set. In the meantime let us know what you think of any of the stuff in the set whether we've covered it or not!

Episode 587 - The Biggs & Wedge Commanders Apr 12, 2020

Show notes

Right smack in the middle of Ikoria previews, WotC decided to preview all of Commander 2020. Since that was confusing for a lot of people, we've decided to separate C20 and Ikoria previews on The Mana Pool. This episode is all about Commander, in case you couldn't tell from the title.

We're starting with the three-color legends and moving into the partnered legends. From there it's a free-for-all as we bounce around the card image gallery and call out whatever looks awesome. What are your favorite cards from the set?

Episode 586 - Magic Kaiju Battle Go! Apr 05, 2020

Show notes

The dorks are back! Why are we back? Because Godzilla!

No, seriously. Godzilla cards. In Magic. Like for real. Well, sort of for real. It's...bizarre.

Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths previews are here! And there's some pretty awesome stuff here other than just the inclusion of everyone's favorite Kaiju. Join us as we talk about all the awesome new stuff!

Episode 585 - Just Chatting Mar 22, 2020

Show notes

This episode is going be a bit different. With all the coronavirus stuff going on across the world and tensions running high everywhere, the dorks couldn't just ignore it all and talk about Magic. While escapism is great, sometimes you've got to face the facts. So the first part of this episode is all about how COVID-19 is affecting us and why we need to embrace social distancing. This is genuinely important. Please stay home unless you HAVE to leave.

But after that, we decided to do something different. We're doing an entire episode of final thoughts! We're touching on the big Year of the Phoenix update from Hearthstone that introduces an ENTIRE NEW CLASS (!) and sends a lot of heavily-played cards to the Hall of Fame. Then there's the Castlevania anime, Designing Women, random bits of racism in public, working from home, DoorDashing during these troubling times, ManaStrike, and how movie theaters actually work. Then we're doing a new Mad Lib, sent to us by Infinious, and it turned out REALLY well.

Oh by the way, Mike's getting married.
