    4 Steps to a Stylish Fall 2026 Sep 15, 2026
    Show notes

My four-step process for approaching a fall wardrobe refresh without the pressure, urgency, or overstuffed hauls that fall marketing pushes on you. I walk through exactly how I personally handle every new season: factoring in how I actually live my life before buying anything, gathering real inspiration without trying to become someone else, shopping my own closet first, and only then figuring out what's actually missing.

This is also the kickoff to our Autumn 2026 series, following along with our Maison Gaton woman as she navigates an overstuffed cornucopia of a season. If you want the deeper story behind the chaos, Chapter One is live now on Substack.

What a Personal Learning Curriculum Actually Looks Like Sep 01, 2026
    Show notes

Welcome back to the First of the Month Files for September 2026.

This episode opens with well wishes for the month ahead, the kind worth sitting with slowly until they do their own bit of magic. Then we're diving into the personal curriculum, which is back by popular request after a member on our end of month Salon call specifically asked about it and several others chimed in that yes, they had been reading and enjoying it all along.

Which is a good reminder. If you think nobody is interested in the thing only you find fascinating: hello pot, meet kettle.

    Three units for September:

Zines and newspapers. This one has taken over completely. We're talking vintage magazine archives, YouTube zine creators, a special stapler, and a very exciting paper project coming to Substack on Friday. Stay tuned.

Close reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. The writing craft is extraordinary. If you've never done a close read before, this episode walks through exactly how to do it: three passes, a notebook for beautiful passages, and a section called Noticings.

Painting hair with acrylics. The portrait series of women with books on their heads continues. Hands remain on the do-not-attempt list after an incident friends have not let go of.

Alternates for when the main units need a rest: Teaching myself calculus. Yes, really. Mary Cassatt and her Japanese-inspired work. And a personal pumpkin bread recipe contest this fall.

How to keep track of all of it: A five-subject five-star binder with rings. Old school, analog, inexpensive, and you genuinely cannot beat it.

If you're working on your own personal curriculum this season, come find us on Substack and tell us what you're learning. The Tuesday Question community thread is where we gather every week: one question, the same question, and the answers are always worth reading.

    Until next week.

Why Busy Women Keep Putting Off Their Best Ideas Aug 25, 2026
    Show notes

If you've been putting off your best ideas, this episode is for you.

We're talking about the long accumulation of later and why busy women keep postponing the things they actually want to do. Not because they're lazy. Not because they don't care. Because we've gotten very good at defending the postponement and forgotten that we could use that same energy to defend the idea.

This episode covers three things. How to talk to the part of you that hears maybe or later as never ever. How to stop procrastinating on your goals without overhauling your entire life. And how to accept that when you finally get to the thing it might look a little different than you expected. That's not a reason to wait longer.

    In this episode:

Why procrastinating on your goals takes more mental energy than just doing the thing for five minutes. The friend who writes her novel between coffee breaks. Why deep work advice ignores everything else busy women are managing. Why starting later in life with more resources and confidence might actually be better. And the mission this week, the first step of something coming out of my own idea parking lot.

Your mission this week: Pick up one idea that has been sitting long enough. You don't have to know what to do with it yet. Just acknowledge it. Just pick it up.

Something is coming out of my own parking lot on September 8th. It's called the Three Day Dare and it ships to everyone on the free Maison Gaton list. If you're already on the list it's coming to you.

    Until next time.

You've Gotten Too Good at Defending "Later" Aug 17, 2026
    Show notes

You've Gotten Too Good at Defending "Later"

What If You Defended the Dream Instead?

You have an idea parking lot. We all do. The podcast episodes, the novels, the 2am mini courses, the business ideas that seemed urgent and then got quietly filed under later.

This week we're talking about the long accumulation of later and the thing most of us have gotten very good at without realizing it. We defend the postponement. We justify why something should wait. We build an airtight case for later.

What if we redirected that energy and used it to defend the idea instead?

    In this episode:

The idea parking lot and why it matters. The long accumulation of later and the perfectly good reasons we've been collecting. Why we get better at defending the postponement than the dream. What changes when you take the pressure off. No monetizing, no perfecting, no helping anyone but yourself. The one spin invitation. What would it feel like to just drive it around the block once?

Your mission this week: Think about one idea that has been sitting in your parking lot long enough. You don't have to declare it yet. Just think about it. What would it feel like to take it out for a spin?

Brainy & Bougie Scavenger Hunt items this week: Search for good smells. A shop, a garden, a market. Attend something live. A reading, concert, lecture, or gallery. Walk somewhere new. Pick a direction and just go.

    Until next time.

How to Add Yourself to Your Own To-Do List Without Overhauling Your Entire Life Aug 11, 2026
    Show notes

Do you wake up every morning to a mental to-do list that's already running before your eyes are even open? You're not alone, and in this episode, we're calling it what it is: the horrible hologram.

In this episode, you'll hear about:

    • The "horrible hologram" the mental to-do list that haunts you before you've even gotten out of bed
    • Why adding to your list (instead of taking things off) might be the key for busy, high-performing women
    • The Brainy & Bougie Activity List: six low-cost, high-joy activities to weave into your week
    • How to reclaim small, sweet moments for yourself without guilt or overhauling your entire routine

Whether you're juggling a business, a household, or both, this episode is a gentle reminder that you deserve a spot on your own list.

    Show notes

Feeling the pull toward pumpkin spice before summer's even over? This week on the Maison Gueton podcast, we're slowing down and savoring what's left of summer with the Brainy and Bougie Scavenger Hunt, a four-week challenge to help you become a tourist in your own life, no vacation required.

Three Stylish Missions from the World of Madame J Jun 16, 2026
    Show notes

Pull up a chair. It's 1951. The linen is crisp, the coffee is strong, and you and I have nowhere to be for at least an hour.

This episode is inspired by Part 3 of The Misadventures of Madame J: Chortler on a Train, and three things it made me think about for all of us.

    Three stylish missions this week:

    • Eat one meal alone. Unhurried. No phone. Order exactly what you want.
    • Slow down for five minutes and pay attention to your surroundings. Notice the stylish clues hiding in plain sight.
    • Write down the rules you've been living by and ask yourself. Which ones are actually serving you?

There's also a stylish clue hidden in Part 3. Did you catch it? Come tell me in the comments on Substack.

Your Style Leaves Clues Jun 02, 2026
    Show notes

Chortler on a Train, No. 1 is live on Substack today. This episode is the companion to it.

Madame J notices what people wear because what people wear is information. She was a spy. That kind of attention doesn't retire just because the war ended.

    This week I talk about:

    • What Madame J sees when she opens that curtain and looks at the dead man across the aisle
    • Why I built her eye for style into the character from the very beginning
    • What we all do every day without realizing it
    • What your style is actually saying right now whether you intend it or not
    • And the research rabbit hole that gave me a better detail than I imagined

    She's Here. Almost. May 29, 2026
    Show notes

    She's Here. Almost.

This episode is about what a story can do that an essay cannot. I have spent years writing essays about formidable women. About refusing smallness. About taking up space without apology. I meant every word of every one of them

I have been sitting on this long enough.

Madame J arrives Tuesday June 2nd on Substack. Five installments. Every Tuesday. Free to read.

Where do you want to be? May 26, 2026
    Show notes

Where Do You Want to Be?

This week I talk about the very human experience of looking for your reflection in someone else's record of the night, what I actually found when I looked, and the distinction that changed everything for me: I wasn't missing from the night. I was missing from the record of the night. Those are two different things.

    This week I talk about:

    • The event, the Instagram carousel, and the very human pang that followed
    • Why I looked anyway even though I told myself not to
    • What I actually found in those videos
    • The difference between being missing from the action and being missing from the record
    • Where you actually want to be this season (not where you think you should be)

Your mission should you choose to accept it: intentionally get in the photo record when it feels good to you. And move toward where you actually want to be. My hope is that this episode helps move you to the dance floor.

Where do you want to be this season? Come tell me in the comments on Substack.
