Episode 41: TJ McConnell | “The last invite” Nov 11, 2021

This week, The Long Shot welcomes on one of our favorite players in the NBA, TJ McConnell. TJ and Duncan share a lot in common… both transferred to high major programs in college, both were undrafted, and both just signed big contracts in the off-season. The guys cover TJ’s journey through the NBA, how he differentiates himself on the court, what it’s like to get a triple double with steals, what his pre-draft workouts looked like, and more.

They also have an honest discussion about what it’s like to go from the “underdog” to someone who signed a big contract, how you keep an edge on your shoulder, and what TJ leans on outside of basketball to stay grounded. Finally, the guys talk about the “Process” Sixers, who TJ wishes to share a glass of wine with in the NBA, and the time he got mistaken as a coach.

Episode 40: Taylor Heinicke | “A good setback is just a possibility for a comeback” Nov 04, 2021

This week the podcast moves from the hardwood to the gridiron as the guys sit down with one of the best recent underdog stories in the NFL. Taylor Heinicke was out of professional football a year ago and finishing his master’s degree at Old Dominion when he got a call from The Washington Football Team to be their “emergency COVID practice player.” After some injuries and roster changes, Taylor found himself starting in the NFC Wildcard game just a few months later. Now he is the starting quarterback in Washington and just inked a new contract that will keep him there for the next two seasons.

The guys discuss his story, finding a rhythm as a consistent starter, the pressure & responsibility that comes with being a quarterback, and how you find comfort and confidence in that role. They also talk about his career at Old Dominion, how a smaller school benefitted him as an athlete, and why so many undrafted guys seem to find success in the NFL.

Then the conversation shifts into the psyche of playing football, the amount of film that Taylor watches, how you “unlock” your mind during games, and dealing with adversity with so much time in-between games.

To wrap up the convo, the guys talk NFL dress code, meditation, float tanks, and favorite music.

Episode 39: Zach Lowe | “You’re just going to leave me the whole NBA?” Oct 28, 2021

This week, The Long Shot is joined by senior ESPN writer and NBA guru Zach Lowe. Zach began his career in journalism covering crime & government and now is widely considered one of the brightest and best reporters that the NBA has to offer. The conversation begins with discussing his background, how those first jobs helped shape him as a reporter, and his unique style of writing.

Then, the guys shift to basketball and Week 1 Overreactions in the NBA: Do the Lakers have too much to try and figure out? How much trouble are the Pelicans in? Are the Bulls legit? Zach also shares his ‘worst take ever,’ what it’s like to deal with angry fan bases, and where he thinks the future of the NBA is headed.

Finally, Zach gives his list of underrated players that he would want on his team and then Duncan and Zach have an honest discussion about players who are considered to be on “good contracts” and how that really means they are underpaid.
