    The Literacy View

The Literacy View podcast is dedicated to providing educators and parents with Breaking News and cutting-edge research in literacy instruction. Nicknamed by one of their listeners as the “Spice Girls of Literacy,” Faith and Judy, two veteran educators who still work in the trenches, bring their expertise, senses of humor, and passion for literacy instruction to the show, making it an engaging and informative experience for listeners. Never shying away from controversial topics and guests, and frequently disagreeing with each other, the hosts break down complex research into easy-to-understand takeaways and provide actionable solutions that teachers and parents can use in their classrooms and at home. And, they are never afraid to good-naturedly call BS or cheer on  their guests or each other when a point or item of discussion excites them. In fact, they have “BS” and “cheer” buttons at the ready for that very purpose!  With their engaging format and wealth of knowledge, Faith and Judy are sure to help you take your teaching to the next level!  It is no wonder that so many of their guests and listeners consider the Literacy View their favorite, can’t-miss podcast in the literacy space. Have fun and learn at the same time!

    The One About…
Multicomponent Literacy Instruction with Bruce Howlett
    Article:
Our Choice: Rapidly Translate, Evaluate and Adopt Innovative Literacy Methods or Prolong the Reading Wars
Bruce Howlett with Caitlin S. Howlett, Ph.D.
    September 6, 2023
(Opinions presented are those of the guest authors and not necessarily those of SPELL-Links |
Learning By Design. They are presented to generate new insights, critical thinking, and solutions for educators and learners.)
    Excerpt:
“As we will see, scholars have questioned the major points of contention — explicit teaching versus implicit learning, and word recognition versus meaning – and found them to be false dichotomies; what the two camps see as opposing concepts are so interdependent as to be inseparable. From this fresh perspective these thought leaders have crafted a new path forward for developmental literacy instruction.
This refreshing perspective has been hiding in plain sight, with its transformative concepts and methods wholly absorbed into the preexisting beliefs and values of both camps. So too, has a solution to the other pressing literacy improvement issue, the lack of a process to rapidly translate and evaluate innovative research into activities that any teacher could successfully use with any student.
We have a choice – continue to debate illusionary conflicts, keep talking past each other and attempting to convert the opposition to our side, while pushing for more time-consuming training — or we can move forward, embracing concepts and methods that clearly supersede – but do not negate – our present beliefs, values and practices.” – Bruce and Caitlin Howlett, co-
authors of Sparking the Reading Shift

    Bio:
Bruce Howlett applies his long experience in biological research at Cornell University
when developing innovative instruction for his special education students. For over 30
years, Bruce has worked with literacy researchers, speech therapists, and reading
teachers to create innovative instruction for long-struggling readers.
Sparking the Reading Shift is his fifth project.
Bruce believes in the power of innovative methods as his own difficulties with reading
fluency, spelling and listening dissipated when, at the age of 40, he began working with a speech therapist on phonemic awareness lessons for their mutual students.
Bruce is currently working on Sparking the Fluency Shift which combines 15 rehearsal
activities that allow the student to practice challenging words and phrases before reading short stories that are arranged by Lexile Level.

Margie Gillis, Ed.D. founded Literacy How to bring knowledge-to-practice research to the classroom. Since it was founded, Literacy How has advanced teaching and learning by helping thousands of educators in hundreds of schools and districts to understand the science of reading and use evidence-based practices to succeed.

Sam Bommarito (Dr. Sam) Presents a Centrist’s View in the Reading Wars
Article: “NC sees big increase in reading skills among K-3 students. Is the state back on track?”
    Keung Hui
    The News & Observer
    https://www.newsobserver.com/news/local/education/article277956948.html
Dr. Sam believes that reading improvements are based on faulty, “phonics-heavy” assessments and the Science of Reading is not a “settled science.”
    Dr. Sam Bommarito (@doctorsam7)
Dr. Bommarito is retired from full-time teaching after a 51-year career in education. That career included teaching at almost every grade from K through graduate school. He taught reading courses to teachers at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. He’s made numerous presentations at ILA (formally IRA) conferences, including national conferences. In spring 2022,
he was a featured speaker at the LitCon conference. Most of his career was spent working in Title 1 buildings as a reading specialist and/or staff developer. Those buildings were often highly successful, as demonstrated by national awards from the Secretary of Education In addition, He tweets daily about his various literacy endeavors (@DoctorSam7).
