    The Left Brain Artist

    Suzanne Redmond talks with artists about their artwork, techniques, and how they’ve created a successful business. With her background in accounting, finance, and exhibiting art, she knows what it takes to get your artwork seen and sold. She’s chosen artists who are working their business – exhibiting their art, teaching others, and finding unusual opportunities. You’ll hear from some unsung artists, who are extremely talented and creative, and hopefully you’ll look up their work and be inspired by what they do. She advises them on how to film and edit their classes, but to also make it in their personal style. She’s found that online classes are doing very well right now, because people are wanting to get an escape and take a fun art class in the comfort of their home. She also offers a 10-week business class online called Creatively Made Business. With all that she does, she’s found a way to integrate her loves of art, travel, home, and family.     Artist Lindsay Ostrom started her art career as a retail shop owner who specialized in craft supplies like paper and rubber stamps. As the art trends changed, so did she, and she evolved into a scrapbooker and a lettering artist. Just since the pandemic began, she has brought her artwork to a large Facebook community, and she creates art with them every morning. She’s published many books and has quite a few online lettering art classes.     #176 Carl Stoveland and Shannon Torrence: An Artist Residency on the Dry Tortugas Aug 19, 2020

    The artists Carl Stoveland and Shannon Torrence are from Lake Worth Beach, Florida. In 2 weeks, they’ll be leaving for a month at the Dry Tortugas National Park, which is west of the Florida Keys, for an artist residency through the National Parks Arts Foundation. Carl is a photographer and he also does watercolors. Shannon is a landscape artist who works with acrylics. They’ll be bringing their art supplies, as well as everything else they’ll need to live for a month on a deserted island. They’ll be off the grid while they’re there, but they’ll be very busy making art and working on their residency project, a documentary film about their time on the island. We talk about how they were awarded this residency, and what their plans are for their month on an island. I will be interviewing them again in October when they return from this residency.     Artist Tracy Verdugo lives on the southeast coast of Australia. Normally she spends the summer traveling the world to teach her classes. In fact, I tried to get her on the podcast last year, but she was traveling so much I couldn’t pin her down! I’m glad to be talking with her today. Tracy is a teaching artist with a unique, brightly colored painting style. You may know her from her book, Paint Mojo, where she showcased her paintings as well as the art of 16 other artists. You also may have taken one of her many art workshops that she teaches all over the world. While she’s had to put the in-person teaching on hold, you can still take one of her 8 online creative courses. She’s even adding another one called Story Painting.
