    Show notes

I get schooled by Jason Heisserer who is the head of school at Crossroads College Preparatory School in St. Louis, MO. He shares tips on how to create a climate that supports kids in navigating their sexual orientation.

How do we have a biology curriculum that is LGBTQ affirmative? How do we have a vocabulary that honors the spectrum of identities?

He addresses these and other questions as a man who has openly identified as queer his entire career as an educator.

When the Church Closes its Doors on an LGBTQ Pastor Feb 18, 2019
    Show notes

The United Methodist Church made headlines when it voted to keep a ban on same-sex marriage and LGBTQ clergy. Yet, it’s one of many denominations that claims to be LGBTQ friendly at the same time as having discriminatory policies. I sit down with a woman who is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ. She has experienced and witnessed heterosexism throughout her time in the church. Most recently, she was fired for being a lesbian– despite fully disclosing this fact before being hired. This interview is a part of our broader series on homophobia and heterosexism.

Talking to Kids About Homophobia Jan 23, 2019
    Show notes

Kids hear and understand the hate of homophobia. It’s important that we talk to them to give them tools to fight it rather than sit by in silence, but that is easier said than done. I took some time to sit down with my pre-teen son Avery to ask him about homophobia and his personal experiences.
