‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, Considering the Past and Confronting Failure Jun 30, 2022
    Show notes

Rabbis Michael Knopf and Jesse Olitzky are lifelong friends, pop culture fanboys, and lovers of all things Jewish. Join them every other week for a conversation about what’s going on in pop culture from a Jewish perspective and about Judaism through the lens of pop culture.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most important characters in the Star Wars saga. It is Princess Leia’s distress call to Kenobi, her father’s former military comrade whom she calls her “only hope”, that sets in motion the events of the original trilogy, which also depicts Obi-Wan helping a young Luke Skywalker become a Jedi, sacrificing his own life in the process. But the prequel trilogy tells the story of how Obi-Wan once mentored Luke’s father, Anakin Skywalker, until Anakin turned to the Dark Side, became Darth Vader, and led a campaign to wipe out the Jedi order. The new Disney+ original series ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, in which Ewan McGregor reprises the role he played in the prequel trilogy, depicts the character between the events of ‘Revenge of the Sith’ and ‘A New Hope’, a time when he is both hunted for and haunted by his past. What does Jewish tradition have to say about (re)considering the difficult parts of our past and confronting our failures? The Force is strong with Rabbis Knopf and Olitzky in this episode as they examine ‘Obi-Wan’ Kenobi “from a certain point of view”.

The Daily Daf DifferentlyWelcome to the Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Abby Sosland looks at Masechet Yevamot, Daf 115.

When is a woman’s testimony to be believed? Our daf today questions the specific kinds of testimony that a woman may bring about her husband’s death, but the fact that she may act as a witness in the first place is not up for debate on our daf.

The opening and closing music for this podcast is Ufros from The Epichorus album One Bead.

The Daily Daf DifferentlyWelcome to the Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Abby Sosland looks at Masechet Yevamot, Daf 113.

The rabbis offer different approaches for different categories of individuals, doing their best to protect the most vulnerable in society. If we combine their approach with the actual perspective and voices of those very people, we may arrive at the very kind of society they were trying to create.

The Daily Daf DifferentlyWelcome to the Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Abby Sosland looks at Masechet Yevamot, Daf 112.

The Talmud offers a record of society’s attitudes in the ancient world. In today’s Mishnah, we see the rabbinic approach to the deaf and/or the deaf-mute. It’s good to know that Jewish law has changed in the years hence.

The opening and closing music for this podcast is Ufros from The Epichorus album One Bead.

If a woman vowed not to receive any benefit from her brother-in-law, would this vow prohibit him from performing Yibum? It’s good to see a case where a woman’s word was taken seriously, even when her vow was invalid.

The Daily Daf DifferentlyWelcome to the Daily Daf Differently. In this episode, Rabbi Abby Sosland looks at Masechet Yevamot, Daf 110.

The ancient world of the rabbis sounds like it was a dangerous place for women. Perhaps, then, the rabbinic treatment of women in this Masechet was their best attempt to protect women from the hazards of the ancient world. Is this apologetics or an accurate reading of the text? Decide for yourself.
