In this episode of The IoClothes Podcast, we’ll be sharing a featured presentation Ben Cooper recently gave at the 2018 Southern Textile Association Summer Marketing Forum in Belmont, North Carolina. The title of my talk, “Who Said We Had to Go to Mars?”. During the presentation, we discuss a common perception that innovation has to be grand and audacious. In some instances, that is certainly the case but the reality is that it sits on a spectrum. The false narrative that innovation needs to disrupt an entire industry is usually how and why programs crash and burn. We discuss what the spirit of innovation really means, and how everyone can start being innovative today!

We caught up with Brad earlier this past fall at the IFAI conference in New Orleans. We spoke with him about some of the cool things happening at Fruit of the Loom Inc, innovating in a large company and the challenges of building unorthodox teams that are needed to be competitive in today's world.

The making of textiles and garments may at first glance seem simple, but are rather complex in nature to produce. When considering integrating electronics, it steps up the level of difficulty quite a bit.
When considering integrating technology into garment being close to the body is a requirement for some applications. It's important to thoroughly consider things like safety, privacy, reliability, as well as function during development.
FOTL, under the Russel Athletics brand, has been integrating sensors in to protective equipment and garment to monitor athletes' health (CarbonTek™ Shoulder Pads).
Bringing disruptive technology concepts is "messy". Being able to navigate, communicate and execute is difficult. The key is relationship building and being open to solving problems in different ways.
To start, CarbonTek™ is serving to help inform design and development of better quality products for Russel Athletics. The vision is to offer real-time insights to coaching and training staff to keep athletes performance at their highest-level.
The biggest challenges as we tackle the e-textiles: safety, standards, privacy with data generated from the devices and the true value that you're offering the end-user.
Crystal Ball Question: 3 years out we won't be talking about how to collect data, we'll be most interested in what we can do with the data. What is the value of the data and who gets access to it.

In this week's episode of The IoClothes Podcast, we welcome Despina Papadopoulos, CEO and Founder of Principled Design to The IoClothes Podcast. Principled Design is a design and development studio based in New York city specializing in creative innovative solutions for connected experiences with emphasis on wearable technology and e-textiles. Despina is an absolute rock star in the interactive textiles world, and has a long list of accomplishments and keynotes. Most recently, her and her team were contributing members to the Ralph Lauren heated jacket Team USA will be wearing for the opening ceremonies in the 2018 Winter Olympics. We caught up with Despina at her studio in New York City and discussed her unique introduction into interactive textiles, what opportunities she's most excited about and get a glimpse into how she sees the future shaping up.

Despina started her career in philosophy and feels it's a driving force in the world interactive design, and smart textiles, that she has continued to have a significant impact in.
Twenty years ago, Despina was working on creating interactive garments. Specifically: jackets that would communicate with one another via infrared.
We are transition from brands and companies purely building integrated electronic garments for PR purposes, and are now starting to realize the potential and the new experiences that can be delivered with technology.
There real opportunities to design and build user experiences, with our clothes, that augment the emotional experience we may be having with our environment or the people around us. This could mean amplifying our experiences, communicating with other or expressing ourselves in new and unique ways.
Collaboration are great. Such as the Nike-Flex or Levi's-Google, but the key to making these work is educating and setting clear expectations as you venture into the unknown.
Projects in this space must have a strong executive champion. Many great project and ideas have failed due to not having the proper top-cover and support that is needed.
In 2016, Principled Design established the Open Innovation Group, which is composed of executives from 5 non-competing companies to discuss where the industry is headed to encourage synergies between them.
Crystal ball question: 3 years out, it's tough. In 5 years, we'll start to see more and more companies releasing projects like Project Jacquard. We'll also start to see the effects of advanced manufacturing and customization creeping the industry. This will allow for less expensive manufacturing and getting control over the production process.

Intexar, is a revolutionary electronic ink and film that seamlessly transforms fabric into smart clothing for multiple applications.

Around 2012, DuPont started investing time and resources into figuring out ways to replace wires with stretchable electronics. Making it more practical and possible to have a robust, effective and washable garment with embedded electronics.
Given the scale and resource of DuPont, it has the infrastructure to support global scale if the market needs so required.
DuPont's is utilizing a well-known process in both the textiles and electronics world for inks application: screen-printing. It offers high-throughput and established processes, thus reducing risk for potential customers.
The stretchable electronics team is open to working with innovator that have just an idea or not idea to a sophisticated product experience as long as it aligns with their strategic vision.
Those that have the expertise hold a very critical role in the finishing process of the product. They provide a critical step in realize the full potential of materials and a final product.
Don't view adding intelligence to your product like a "bold on". View it as an integral part of the value offering and be open bringing in unorthodox partners, and be prepare to make an investment.
Crystal ball question: In 3-5 years, compelling use-cases will be presented. The opportunity to be understand ourselves and our bodies with smart clothing will offer unprecedented insight into ways to live healthier lives.

Today their core technology, Loomia Electronic Layer (LEL), is a fabric that can be patterned to be a circuit. We also learn more about their stance on privacy, as it relates to personal data, and how blockchain is helping enable that.

" The reason we've seen some resistance to the adoption of wearables is because you need to build solutions around a product. " The Loomia Electronic Layer (LEL) is designed to be easily integrated in the manufacturing process they're already using. " It's important for Loomia to be members of both AFFOA and NextFlex because they both are helping build independently important elements of the smart textiles supply chain, manufacturing, education, workforce development and nurturing important core technologies critical to growth of the industry. " Loomia published a whitepaper in August 2017 on personal privacy and their position on data collection. They believe that ownership is that of the wearer and the user has then the right to monetize it if they choose. " The Loomia Title is built on the blockchain. This will enable both users and brand partners to access approved sets of data and exchange token safely and securely.
" Loomia recognizes the importance of data security. Being able to utilize the structure of the blockchain, risk of data breaches for both the user and partner companies comes down dramatically. " Crystal Ball Question: 3-5 years from now the smart textiles, smart apparel and smart footwear will look a lot different. The consumer will expect greater functionality and connectivity in their clothes. Clothes that heat up or have embedded sensing technologies will be minimum standards and be the expectation of the customer.
