This week’s episode comes fresh off the press from the Luxembourg Philharomie with orchestral flute superstar, former Kobe Flute Competition Winner, Jolivet aficionado and super-mom; Hélène Boulègue.
I’ve been a fan of Hélène for years now, so getting to sit down with her to chat about her career, social media and most strikingly, motherhood was a legit privilege.
If you only watch one part of this episode, skip ahead to the chapter on motherhood; especially if you’re a fella.

All music is political; the fact it even exists is a political debate. So on the most political day of the year for the flute, join me as I discuss the role it plays as a symbol for both the Ulster Unionist and Catholic Nationalist communities across Ireland.
I also chat about why music is inherently left-wing, and why classical music insists of being apolitical in an ever changing world.

The Punk Ethos is defined by anti-authoritarian and anti-establishment views, carried out in a DIY fashion. Is there anyone in Classical Music truly doing this, or is elitism too deeply ingrained in the culture?
I explore the roots of punk, the differences between punk as a genre and as an ethos, and finally I give my 3 favourite classical music “punks.”

The flute podcasting world is a rapidly growing one, but there’s one podcast that’s stood the test of time; the reliable stalwart of consistent excellence that is Talking Flutes. I’ve been a fan since the early days, and without it, Inline G wouldn’t exist. So it brings me great pleasure to FINALLY twist the arm of host Jean-Paul Wright into coming on here and giving us the crossover younger Gareth dreamed of.
Not only a podcaster, Jean-Paul is also the Managing Director of Trevor James Flutes, having previously worked with Sankyo and Miyazawa, as well as being a trailblazer in the field of musician’s mental health.
This is a lovely, positive episode talking about validity as musicians, what art means to us and how to look after ourselves. It also has some of the best anecdotes Inline G has ever seen; including the origin story of the red socks, told publicly for the first time ever.

This week’s Inline G couldn’t have had a more serendipitous timing, as I sat down with the brand new (as in, 2 days brand new!) permanent Principal Flute of the WDR Funkhausorchester; Marianna Busslechner.
Formerly at the Staatskapelle Dresden orchestral academy, Marianna chats about her experiences going directly from playing under Christian Thielemann to improvising jazz solos at the WDR.
We also chatted about her now professional connections with Die Maus and Tatort, and I finally get to ask a guest their favourite Arctic Monkeys song.

Inline G return’s to it’s roots this week; hungover with a world-class flutist, sipping on a Spezi and chatting about all the big issues of the flute world.
One of my personal best mates, French superstar orchestral musician and soloist Alice Brie was in town, and after a long night of Guinness until 4am, we emerged at 11am for a podcast.
Alice chats about everything from her experiences as a child prodigy, studying at the CNSM as a teenager, her orchestral debut at l’Opéra de Paris at just 18, right through to French v German tonguing and the role kindness plays to becoming better musicians.
This was a delight of an episode. I’m away for a nap and a kebab now x

After I waxed lyrical on Episode 28 of this podcast about Julien Beaudiment’s latest album, “California Dreamin’”, it was an inevitability that I would coax him on here. He found himself in Sunny Köln whilst on tour with The London Symphony Orchestra recently, and thus here we are.
Julien and I chatted about his time in orchestras in The UK, France and The US, as well as his nervousness before concerts, a shared love of apfelschorle and inevitably; The French Flute School.
There’s also an incredibly special sneak peak of Julien’s upcoming solo album at the very end of the episode. I can’t stress how lucky you guys are to hear this first; a true Inline G exclusive.

On the 12th April of this year, Vulture magazine published an article entitled “A Hidden Sexual Assault Scandal at the New York Philharmonic.”
It details an alleged sexual misconduct case from 2010, and the various related ongoings since then.
I am delighted to welcome the author of this landmark piece, Sammy Sussman, on to Inline G to talk about it, the various reactions and the potential implications for the classical music world.
Please also be aware that this episode contains descriptions of abuse, which some may find triggering.
This was a landmark episode, and I am thrilled that guests of this calibre feel comfortable to tell their story on Inline G.

We also chatted a bit about his experiences studying with Jacques Zoon, Emmanuel Pahud, Andrea Oliva etc and his surprising love for System of a Down.

I know I say this every week, but this episode was legitimately one of my favourite Inline G episodes. My guest is American flutist, professor, academic AND friend of the podcast; Dr Brianne Little.
Brianne came on at my request to chat about one thing; her Doctoral Thesis on the flute concerto “To Notice Such Things” by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and founding member of Deep Purple; Jon Lord.
The piece itself is a stunning, cinematic masterpiece and Brianne has been working tirelessly for years to get it the recognition in the flute repertoire it deserves; and now I (and hopefully all of you) will join her in the good fight.
This episode also features the first EVER time I’ve had to beep out a swear word on Inline G; a landmark moment.

Sandwiched in between all the flute superstar guests here on Inline G is the Irishman’s Christmas; St Patrick’s Day. So this week, we take a break from the flute intellectualism (and the flute in general) as I sat down with Niall from Sligo to curate a true Irish Person’s St Paddy’s Day playlist.
From The Dubliners and Pogues to Westlife and Boyzone, we go through everything that gets Irish people turnt on the big day (including the mythical Irish Lock-in.) Fair enough; it took us a wee while to get to the music. We’re Irish and we had a few pints: sue us x

Ok, I know, this episode is longer than usual. BUT, I simply couldn’t cut anything out, this conversation was flute gold from start to finish. So please use the chapters if you want to split it up, and DO NOT MISS Alexis’ History of Flutes; yous are being spoiled.
I often speak of my Holy Trinity of period flute players, and Alexis Kossenko is a cornerstone of them. Therefore I’m beyond buzzed to having him on to chat everything from The French Flute School, to Alain Marion, Conducting and Academia’s role in performing.
I also can’t recommend Alexis’ YouTube channel “Les concerts de Pan” enough; an essential resource for all flutists.

I continue to collect my personal favourite flutists on Inline G this week, with folk music expert, author, recording artist, multi-instrumentalist and all-round icon; Philippe Barnes.
Philippe's brand new record, The Clearwater Sessions, with Tom Phelan on piano comes out fittingly on St Patrick's Day (17th March 2024), so we sat down and had a chat about it, and the 18 year journey from the cult album The Madrid Sessions. We also discussed Philippe's varied career in television and recording, as well as his love for Boyz II Men.
The Clearwater Sessions is available on CD, Vinyl and Streaming, and you can get more info on Philippe's website over at www.PhilippeBarnes.com

Toxic Masculinity has became a buzzword in modern society (and with good reason) so today, I’m here to firstly analyse the term itself, before looking at the relationship it has with abusive behaviour.
I then go into some examples from both the Classical Music and Flute Worlds, before ending with some possible antidotes to the toxicity.
Warning: This isn’t the usual happy-go-lucky Inline G episode you might be used to. I talk about themes of abuse that some may find upsetting, so if you’re not in the right headspace for that, go check out another episode and I’ll see you next week x

Inline G ticks another country off the list, as I headed to Luxembourg to catch up with Polish flute superstar, former Karajan Academy Member, Orchestral Flutist, International Soloist and Recording Artist (and one of my personal favourite flutists); Zofia Neugebauer.
We chatted about everything from her upcoming Mozart CD and the influence of period performance on it, to her teaching philosophy, her compositional life and how Beyoncé and Tokio Hotel play in to it all.

The Great school of French flute playing started way back in the 1800s, and continues to be the gold standard to this day. However, why did it start in Paris? Who are the big players? What make's it so unique?
This week's episode is the definitive guide, covering everything from it's political origins through to the modern day conservatoire system. Along the way, I'll also explain all those French terms like concours and premier prix with their true translations and meanings (relying on my own studies in the French capital a few years ago). So sit back, pour yourself a vin rouge, and enjoy x

Ask and ye shall receive; this week whilst I'm home for Christmas, my Grandfather (and Flute Band legend) Brian Houston has found time in his schedule to make an appearance on the podcast (and even offered up his kitchen for the occasion.)
We chat about his decorated career as conductor and player of some of the finest flute bands in Northern Ireland, over a glittering 67 year career. From competitions with Jimmy Galway, to a titanic clash with Arthur Fleming for the World Championships, this episode is a real treat for flute band enthusiasts.
We also welcomed my Grandmother, Valerie Houston, for the first 10 minutes to comment as Inline G's biggest fan, and she finally addresses those bread knife threats.
I'd also recommend checking out episode 5, "Flute Bands of Northern Ireland" before watching this episode. It'll give you all the background information you need; we had too much to cover to go back to basics today.

I've had enough of the trope that Mozart hated the flute, and so I'm here to put it to bed once and for all. I'll explain where it came from, why it was probably just a 22 year old overreacting and then go through all the wonderful things Wolfie Mozart composed for the flute.
I'll round it up with telling you my three favourite Mozart flute recordings, and why you should love them too.

Only 1% of podcasts make it to episode 20, so through pure process of elimination, this is one of the world's best podcasts. So to celebrate, join me as I dive into that famously light-hearted subject; Classical Music within the Social Class System.
I chat about what the Social Class System is, where Classical Music belongs within it and the reasons why. I have a roasting hot take on why it has the place it does, before proposing a "solution" to making it more accessible.

I had a lovely, positive episode lined up this week and then; I logged into Facebook (I know, I've only myself to blame.)
So this week I'll be chatting about what awaited me on Flute Facebook, and how it generated this last minute episode on bullying, community and dealing with the extreme anxiety we can get posting videos of our playing online.
I also take you guys through my (very) long journey of posting online, trying on all kinds of looks for years before landing on this podcast (which fits like a glove.)

In a landmark moment for this podcast, I am DELIGHTED to welcome the world's most published living flute composer, and legit flute superstar, the one and only; Gary Schocker.
Gary and I chatted online over the course of an hour about everything from his early musical on Superman and Lois Lane's child, to the role études play for a flutist; via Alexander Technique, New York in the 70s and his chosen karaoke song.
I even got an impromptu performance of a Beatles tune on the harpsichord from Gary, all while I sat with a can of G&T and drank the moment in.
(We also address THAT Florida flute scandal)
Check out the chapters below for all the different topics and to skip to your favourite bit. I hope you all enjoy listening to this as much as I did making it, because I had an absolute blast.

I accidentally created the perfect environment for creative flow, by preparing to finish the Spider-Man 2 Playstation game.
So this week I'm taking a look at "flow" and it's role and importance for an artist/musician/flutist.
I also chat about the term artist, as well as the definition of success and how variable it is. I round it up by explaining how this podcast is potentially the most successful in the world, all on the same day I finished Spider-Man 2.
Enjoy x

This is a big one lads. I promised you all bigger and better guests, and like my local postman; I've delivered.
In another episode recorded in Belfast's Sunflower Public House, I've managed to get Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble and Irish Memory Orchestra flutist, Aisling Agnew to join me for a non-alcoholic pale ale and a wee chat.
It's a bumper episode, so the chapters are down below if you wanna skip to a certain part, but it's well worth the time. Aisling talks about everything from her days in the 39th Old Boys Flute Band, to studying in London and Glasgow, and her love of contemporary music, as well as the importance of memorisation and her gorgeous wooden flute. If you're one of those people that hasn't caught the modern music bug, this episode is for you.
Soak it all up everyone, Aisling is a player I've admired for a long time so this was a biggie for me personally and I hope you all get as much out of it as I did.
You can find recordings and links for all of Aisling's projects over at www.aislingagnew.com. Two of her records, "Recital" and "BILDA" are on all your streaming services now. You can also google Hard Rain Soloist Ensemble or The Irish Memory Orchestra to catch more performance dates.

I'm back home in sunny (yes, really!) Belfast, and I'm taking a break from sitting in pubs talking about martial arts with strangers to record a few podcast episodes. Thanks to the sound people at the Sunflower Public House, I've been able to use their stunning venue to welcome another guest to the pod; one third of Irish folk trio TRÚ (and my best mate) Zach Trouton.
Zach and I sat down over a few pints to talk about our early days making music together, the influence School of Rock had on us, playing Irish music together in Cardiff, TRÚ's brand new album and even some local ghost stories. Aren't I spoiling you lot?
TRÚ are one of the hottest bands in Ireland at the minute, and you can stream both their first record "No Fixed Abode," and their brand new second album "Eternity Near" right now. I personally recommend checking out their version of the song "County Down," a beautiful song telling the tale of a young man moving away from Ireland and the call of home.

We're finally wrapping up the trilogy of episodes started way back in Episode 12, as we take a look a look at who MIGHT be next in line for the crown that Rampal, Galway and Pahud have all worn.
Firstly, I'll take a quick look at some contemporaries of Pahud who almost got the title (missing out purely because of fate putting them on this Earth as the same time as Emmanuel.)
Then I take three picks; The Favourite, The Up and Comer and The Wild Card as my options for who could be the next, great flute superstar.

Think of this week's episode as a soft-sequel to last week's episode; you don't need the background material, but it might make it more fun to go Easter Egg hunting.
As we consider the flute world and the next superstar to ascend the Throne, this episode take's a look at the unique challenges they may face. From social media, to streaming, the cost of living crisis and the new breed of crossover artists, I round it up by using French violinist Esther Abrami as the new Gold Standard for modern classical musicians.

After two consecutive weeks of guests, we're back to just you and I this week, as we get back to the usual shite-talking you've come to expect. I'll be analysing the three most commercially successful flute players of all time, and how there only ever seems to be space for one flute superstar at a time.
From the 1940s to modern day, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Sir James Galway and Emmanuel Pahud have dominated the flute scene. I look at what stood them apart from their contemporaries, as well as what common themes between them shot them to superstardom (despite being artistically very different.)

I'm spoiling you lot with guests at the moment, as for the second successive week we have one on the podcast, and this one is an actual flute player!
Hot off the back off his TWO debut solo albums, I sit down with Spanish flutist Juan Cossío to sip on Sangria and talk flute.
We'll be chatting about Juan's two albums featuring the music of Kummer and Henkel, his experiences studying with Jacques Zoon and Robert Winn and he even weights in to the Inline vs Offset G debate.
We wind it up with some flute games, with Juan trying to guess the flutist from 10 recordings and then to guess the piece based off a flutey excerpt. Have a listen and see if you can beat him to it.

Well lads and ladies, we've made it to Episode 10! I promised you all a wee treat, so this week we have our first ever guest on the podcast; my former flatmate here in Cologne (and the finest man in Aachen's Fair City,) Jakob Sailer!
As a wee celebration, this week's episode takes a U-Turn and heads down a new road. During the COVID pandemic, I moved into a new flat with Jakob, a non-flutist, so I've got him on to talk about what it's like to spend lockdown with a professional flutist in the bedroom next door.
I test Jakob's memory skills on the orchestral excerpts he heard me play hundreds of times, and give him his first ever flute lesson, all whilst sipping on a few (many) flute themed cocktails.

It's the episode nobody has been waiting for; I'm finally taking a deep dive into the famous Flute Forum group on Facebook, reading you guys some of my favourite threads from within.
Looking at key factors (age and culture), I then look to suggest some reasons why the group can be so volatile, and help you develop a touch of empathy towards it all.
Finally, I have a look at a strange trend in the flute world that looks like an awful lot like a pyramid scheme (and give you some tips to recognise them, if needed.) As always, if there's a specific section you fancy skipping to, scroll down here for the different chapters.

A bumper music history episode this week, as I firstly explore the Vienna Philharmonic's shockingly dark Nazi past, as well as there racist and sexist present.
The second half uses the two extremes of Belfast adjectives, Shite and Class, to analyse Johann II and Richard Strauss. Looking at both of them, I compare their lives, their music and their respective links to the Nazi Party.
I round up with a delicious recording of some flute Strauss, all whilst sipping on an Irn Bru.

I went and saw the Barbie movie and got inspired to do an episode on female flute players, which has quickly spiralled out of control (quelle surprise). This week's episode starts with my own experiences of female mentors, before listing the first female principal orchestral flutists in fourteen different countries, in the form of a game show (yes, really).
I move on to taking a look at a real success story for female orchestral flutists; the current orchestral landscape in Paris. Then finally, I wrap it all up with some of my favourite female players (Magali Mosnier, Irina Stachinskaya, Zofia Neugebauer, Sophie Cherrier and Rachel Brown) and the essential recordings to get your ears around.

This week's episode is a long one, so feel free to scroll down and find the chapters in the description below if you fancy skipping to a certain part. We'll look at the unique teacher-student relationship and the power dynamic that comes with it, as well as the role of social classes amongst students in college.
I'll be rounding it up with 5 tips for anyone going to or currently enrolled in music college, that I wish I had known before going.

Things are getting HOT in the Inline G studio, as I deep dive into perhaps the sexiest piece (and flute solo) of all time; Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel.
It almost goes without saying, however there is a trigger warning for this episode; I'll be discussing things of a sexual nature and strong sexual themes, and the podcast does include strong language throughout (although that bit is hardly news.)
Anyway, this is is your one-stop-shop for all the background knowledge you need on the flute's most famous orchestral solo. The episode includes a quick history lesson, a concise explanation of the story, a short look at Pan (the pervy Greek god), some info on Ravel himself (including his Siamese cat's name) and finally, an analysis into all the things that make this music so God damn sexy.
Scroll down here to find a list of chapters if you fancy skipping to a certain bit.
Pop back next week when I'll be reviewing my favourite 5 recordings of the flute solo itself (including time stamps and track numbers so you can easily find them on all your streaming services.)

On this week's episode, I pull on the thread of the "world's most expensive flute" a little too hard, and end up telling the story of an almost mythical golden flute. I discuss high-end guitars and violins for comparison, before rounding it all up with what happened to the Flute Excalibur.
