049 // Opening Up About Cycle Recovery + Regaining our Periods w. Allie Labazzo May 28, 2020
    Show notes

For the longest time, I thought I was totally alone in my struggle with missing periods. It wasn't until I first opened up about my hormonal imbalance and hypothalamic amenorrhea on episode 16 that so many others started sharing their experiences with me, looking for a path to regaining their cycle.

As it turns out, this issue is far too common, especially among women who are involved in the world of health and fitness. Why is it that the journey to greater health is leaving many of us without our fifth vital sign?

This episode is as real, raw and honest as it gets. I sit down with Allie Labazzo, a personal trainer who also struggled with HA, to talk about our experiences with HA, the recovery process as mapped out by Dr. Nicola Rinaldi in her book No Period Now What, and why it's about so much more than getting your period back-- it's about getting your life back.

This experience has totally shifted the way I look at health, my work, my identity, and what it means to be truly alive. Whether you're struggling with missing periods or not, this episode is worth a listen.

    048 // Releasing Restriction + Getting Fiber Fueled with Dr. B @TheGutHealthMD May 15, 2020
    Show notes

Gut health has exploded in the last few years, and I think now is certainly as good a time as any to be paying attention to our gut health. With the topic of immunity on our minds, the gut isn't often the first place we think of-- but it should be. As you'll learn, "gut health IS immune health!"

What impacts our gut the most? Turns out it's not just what you eat, but what you're not eating. In this episode, Dr. B returns to the show to discuss the dangers of restrictive diets, the reason why so many are experiencing digestive distress, and how the answers to fix your microbiome are revealed in his new book, Fiber Fueled.

    This episode covers...

    • Embracing the now: identifying the positives of Quarantine
    • Releasing your to-do list, letting go of the need to be productive
    • Why gut health IS immune health
    • Gut health and hormones!
    • The impact of restrictive diets on your gut, and how it ties back to hormones (and my own experience with this!)
    • Touching on gut health and disordered eating
    • Using science (GOOD science) as your compass to better health
    • The 5 microorganisms (it's not just all "bacteria")
    • To wash or not wash our produce?
    • The connection between gut & mental health

This is just scratching the surface...

In Fiber Fueled Dr. Will lays out the science (spoiler alert: there’s a lot of it) that supports a plant-forward diet for total wellness. And if you don’t believe me, or him, then we’ll let 600+ scientific citations do the talking. Plus, Fiber Fueled has a 28-day jumpstart program with menus and 65+ recipes, along with essential advice on food sensitivities. And maybe the best part is that this book is fun and easy to read. I can't recommend it enough!

    047 // Astrogeography + North Nodes w. Dara Dubinet Apr 23, 2020
    Show notes

Have you ever traveled somewhere and immediately felt connected to it? Or maybe you've been somewhere that felt really off, but you couldn't quite put your finger on it. Well, there's actually an explanation for that, and it's called astrogeography. I had the great pleasure of chatting with astrogeography and north nodes expert Dara Dubinet all about how "the astrology of place" and interpreting your north node (your soul path) can help you to not only understand where you've been, but guide you where to go next-- geographically and spiritually.

    • What exactly is astrogeography, and what we can discover about ourselves
    • How the energies of different places impact us individually and how to work with those energies
    • How to utilize astrogeography in planning trips, business, and putting down roots
    • The intersection of astrogeography and north nodes (and what those are)
    • South Node vs. North Node: is this our individual "path to enlightenment" ?
    • Signs that we are shifting towards our north node
    • What we can learn from our north node about how we show up in relationships, career, home, etc
    • How does this differ or relate to other personality/design typing, like Human Design?

046 // Responsibility v. Reactivity + Moving Forward in Times of Stillness Apr 15, 2020
    Show notes

These are crazy times, there's no denying that. With the majority of the world in quarantine, plans postponed or cancelled, businesses struggling, loved ones forbidden from seeing each other, there is a lot of uncertainty circulating and as human nature would have it, uncertainty breeds fear. But it doesn't have to be this way. When our circumstances feel out of our control, what we always have control over is our responsibility-- that is, our ability to respond rather than react. This episode goes into the difference between the two words in a way you may not have considered, as well as how to embrace the now as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, rather than closing our eyes until it's all over. In addition, we cover...

    • How to deal with shifting timelines and agenda this season
    • How and why yoga teacher training is for everyone
    • Responsibility vs. reactivity - are you living "above or below the line" ?
    • A more empowering outlook on life's happenings
    • How to acknowledge who you truly are (not just what you do)
    • Breaking up with toxic habits (that may be masked as "productivity")
    • Finding gratefulness in the little things that we take for granted
    • The truth behind “wherever you go there you are”
    • Places AND people can have energy than can be overwhelming and stagnating
    • What lesson can you take from this current experience?

    045 // Identity, Intuition, Integration, Intention Mar 08, 2020
    Show notes

Identity, Intuition, Integration, Intention. These are the 4 guiding principles I've come to live, learn, and love by. These are the pillars of what The HYE Life is all about!

I'm grateful to be able to share this interview I had with another wellness entrepreneur from an online summit series. We talked about these 4 concepts, how they provide a blueprint for us to take a closer look at our lifestyle and daily choices, and how they can guide us back into alignment.

044 // The Healing Power of Carbs w. Diabetes Experts Robby Barbaro + Cyrus Khambatta Feb 18, 2020
    Show notes

There’s a lot of conversation around blood sugar stability in today’s dietary health circles, but not a whole lot of clarity around how to go about achieving it, particularly for long term health. When primary care doctors are prescribing one type of diet, alternative medicine doctors another, and social media influencers another, it becomes even more confusing to know what’s truly trustworthy.

For a long time, the accepted protocol in the medical field for those with insulin resistance and diabetes was to follow a high fat, low carb diet and take high doses of insulin injections for life. But that never truly felt like a solution for the guests on today’s show, who have taken the old methods the outdated science and turned it on it’s head.

Diabetes experts Robby Barbaro, MPH and Cyrus Khambatta, PhD share their stories from being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes to how they conquered their condition and learned to thrive through the healing powers of a high-carb plant-based diet. Since healing themselves, they’ve gone on to help thousands of others manage and reverse their diabetes through diet and lifestyle changes, as outlined in their online program and newly-released book, Mastering Diabetes .

    043 // Creating Hormonal Harmony with Emily Waterfield-Buttner @golden.wellness Feb 07, 2020
    Show notes

Hormones have long been the butt of every joke for why something in us just isn’t quite right.

“I’m just hormonal,” “I feel like shit, my period must be coming soon,” “she’s being so bitchy, she must be PMSing,”… I could go on. But as we are learning more and more, as alternative and natural health medicine is growing in popularity and in depth, hormones are no joke.

A topic that is near and dear to my heart, as I’ve been dealing with my own hormonal imbalance the past few years, I brought my friend and fellow health coach Emily Waterfield-Buttner to the show to talk creating hormonal harmony, the importance of balancing your hormones for overall health, vitality, aging, and how to not just learn to live with your hormones, but learn to thrive.

    • Why your period is like a monthly checkup

    Show notes

“If I’m making progress, why do I feel so off?”

Often times, when we are first stepping into a new level of growth, abundance or opportunity, the transition can feel more negative than immediately positive. Why is that? And how do we proceed without sabotaging ourselves?

Sharing my thoughts and experience with arriving in Bali, how changing things up is vital for self reflection, and my intention for the year.

    041 // The Nitty-Gritty on Non-Toxic w. Jill Sheridan, M.Ed Biology + Founder of Ms. Fresh Organics Jan 16, 2020
    Show notes

“Non-toxic” has become another trendy word, right up there with “organic,” “all natural,” “plant-based” and the like. These are all vitally important terms and concepts to understand and implement, but the fact that they are trendy makes it harder for some of us to actually embrace them— and makes it easier for big companies to abuse them. Just as we can’t always trust every snack label claiming “all natural” and “organic” as healthy, it can be even trickier to discern dishonest marketing practices in the realm of skincare, beauty, and cleaning products. The best things we can do to support our health, vote with our dollar, and shop non-toxic is to make our own (incredibly simple, and affordable!) and to buy from small businesses, like Ms. Fresh Organics.

Today’s guest, Jill Sheridan, M.Ed, biology started her non-toxic business in 2017 after 7 years of creating her own home and body care products for her family and friends. After her son’s bad reaction to the steroid cream he was prescribed for eczema, she took matters into her own hands (literally) to craft her highly-renowned “body buttah.” And thus, Ms. Fresh Organics was born.

A note from Jill: “I just want people to know that safe and effective choices are available at a price families can afford. I specialize in education and empowerment and I provide safe swaps. My products are made in small batches with organic, toxin-free ingredients. I love that women in science and engineering are leading the way with this movement.”

    Episode HYElights:

    • The minimal ingredients that provide maximum benefits across the board
    • Why detoxing is not just about removing the toxins— it’s about keeping them out in the first place
    • Why “Anti-Aging” is a misnomer
    • The product I am the MOST obsessed with, and why
    • The #1 thing to avoid in all beauty and home care products, and other top offenders
    • The heated debate around regulating the personal care products industry
    • Trusted sources for getting your information
    • How chemicals found their way into our products in the first place
    • The impact of these chemicals on everything from our skin to our liver, hormones, thyroid, immune system, and gut
    • Simple ways to start to shift to non-toxic routines
+ SO much more— we dive deep!!

    040 // Finding Confidence Through Vulnerability Jan 10, 2020
    Show notes

    “How do I build confidence?”

We all want confidence but we don’t want to be vulnerable.

But we forget that true confidence requires courage— the ability to do something that frightens us. Without courage, there is no growth.

Vulnerability is courage. To show up, to trust, to walk into the arena, to accept the unknown.
