I get a lot of this in my DMs: “Hey Sarah! I’m really excited to be getting my business off the ground, but I have no idea where to start! I’m so overwhelmed! Can you help point me in the right direction? Or… any direction?”

Starting your first business can be overwhelming because there are so many things that need to get done, and probably even more that you haven’t thought of yet! Where do you focus? What do you save for later? Were the three hours you spent debating between fonts for your webpage really worth it? (Probably not, y’all.)

This episode is for you! And it’s also for you business owners who are looking ahead and trying to figure out where to grow and how to move your business forward.

In this episode, I talk about inertia, procrastination, and clarity. I point out the most common places I see people wasting their energy, and remind business owners what their three concrete jobs are. I break down how to think about the money you make in relation to the offers you create, and invite you to answer some specific, clarifying questions about your business. Ultimately, I want you walking away from this episode with a strong idea of what results you get from the tasks you do, so that you easily know what to prioritize, what to delegate, and what not to bother with.

You probably know Cat from her beautiful instagram account @theolivetreesandthemoon. She is a land steward, knitter, folk herbalist and mother who believes in the magic of where one stands, deeply rooted in bio-regional characteristics. Her grid is a gorgeous collection of snapshots from her life on a dreamy hill in Portugal that will have you drooling over some Slow Living fantasies. But did you know about her secret life?

In this episode, I do get to talk with her about her process of finding home on the land she lives on, creating community, and finding groundedness in the act of making. I also get her to spill a dark secret: her grid aesthetics landed her a job as a social media consultant!

So, after we cover the ins and outs of her dreamy life, we dive into the messy world of social media: the beauty of the connection, and the false sense of intimacy. The inspiration and the comparison. The information superhighway and the echo chamber of opinions. Cat shares the ways that consulting has changed her relationship with social media and the boundaries she needs to keep her personal life separate from her professional one. She talks about the phenomenon of shock, when followers find out that instagram influencers do not share their politics and why it is so important to take activism offline and into our physical communities.

Are you the kind of person who likes good news first? Or bad news first? Which order do you want them in this month? August has some really big dreams and some really hard work, and the cards are telling us that we can’t pick and choose, we have to take the whole deal.

This month, we are being called into ourselves. We are being called to remember our passion. What lights you up? When are you the best leader? What do you get up excited and ready to do? Ignore your customers for a minute (but like, not much longer than that. I know they are important to you!) and remember the things that drive you, instead of responding to what others demand of you. These are the things that August is screaming for!

Of course, to make room for new, we have to get rid of the old and that is the harder work of this month. We have a choice: let go of the things that aren’t serving us, or have those doors closed in our faces. Passion and excitement aren’t always enough to cover the pain and discomfort of letting go and the cards warn us that it might be painful.

August calls us to walk away from Good Enough and face the unknown for the sake of a better world.

Alignment isn’t Always Easy with Jen Casey Jul 23, 2020

This week, I talk to one of my amazing business mentors, Jen Casey! Jen is an incredibly successful brain-based business coach and neuro-linguistic programming coach, who supports people running high level coaching programs. She runs the mastermind that I am personally in, so I already know how brilliant she is! I’m so excited to have her here, so that you can get at this brilliance, too.

Jen shares her wild journey from therapist’s kid, to performer, to the amazing coach she is today (with a few more stops along the road). We discuss WTF coaching actually is (and is not) and she tells us how learning neuro-linguistic programming completely changed Jen’s work. She shares her breakdown of the hilariously accurate archetypes that pop up in every coaching program and how she revamped her program to ensure better success for all her customers.

I ask Jen about sustainability in our work and how she keeps up motivation over the long haul. We talk about the difference between hustle and burnout and the concept of being “aligned” in our work; how different times call for different kinds of action; how we discern between when we are forcing ourselves into something we aren’t meant to do, vs. when we are putting in the necessary effort to be masterful. She even manages to successfully rope in a golfing metaphor? I know.

Finally, we dive into one of Jen’s favorite topics: finding your niche! She shares tips on how to have an online presence that people actually care about and shares the three biggest mistakes people make, while they are trying to help everyone.

Last week on the podcast, I talked about the concept of marketing and selling with authenticity. This week, I want to piggyback off of that and dedicate an entire episode to a giant misunderstanding I see in small business marketing: folks are focusing on the wrong numbers.

More followers on social media does not mean more sales in your business!

If you have been listening to this podcast for a while, you know that I am an advocate of social media. I am quick to jump to its defense when people get on their soap boxes about how digital connection is the demise of human connection. I do actually love Instagram! It’s just not the focus of my business.

The focus of my business is in finding the people who want my work, selling it to them, and then giving it to them, and doing that as effectively as possible through high sales conversion rates.

And why are my conversion rates higher than the average in the world of online sales and marketing? Because I dropped my obsession with middle school-esque popularity and focused my attention on service, which is really just another way to say sales.

Do you miss telemarketers? Back in the day, when we had landlines and couldn’t screen our calls and we’d rush to the ringing phone only to have a disembodied voice immediately launch into trying to sell us something? No? Me neither. I always hung up wondering, “who actually buys vacuum cleaner bags from a cold call?”

Cold DMs are the new telemarketers, y’all. But unsolicited pitches clogging up inboxes is only one of many marketing mistakes I see small business owners making as they try to mimic the behavior of big companies that seem to make a lot of sales.

Don’t you want to be CHOSEN by your customers? Don’t you want enthusiastic consent? I want a “hell yes” from my customers. I created my business to create impact, not to collect faceless credit card numbers. And if you’re like most of the small business owners I help, you feel the same passion for what you offer.

So, this week on the podcast, I want to talk about the advantage that small business owners have in marketing: actual human interaction! And what do we want out of human interaction? Enthusiastic consent!

In this episode, I share the biggest mistakes I see in marketing and share the framework for sales that works for me, as a soul-centered, service-oriented entrepreneur: Consensual Selling.

This week, I am so excited to welcome Cameron Glover to the podcast! Cameron is a certified sex educator, business coach, and consultant. She works with sexuality professionals to create successful digital businesses in this cutting-edge field. In addition, she also hosts the Sex Ed in Color podcast, where she centers the experiences of sexuality professionals of color.

Cameron does for sex educators what I do for makers, mystics, and healers, and it is just so cool get to learn from her experience and hear about the similarities and differences in our work!

In this episode, we talk about our horrifying early experiences of sex education, from parents to gym coaches. Cameron explains how modern sexuality professionals are changing the landscape of sex education and why it is so important. She points out the particular obstacles to being a sexuality professional in our highly censored society, and why such professionals need business support that is particular to their feed.

Then, we move on to the business side of her work. Cameron shares her journey with money mindset and what she sees as the future of sex education. She shares her feelings on certification vs. training, how boundaries allow her space to be a full person, and why Inbox Zero is never going to make her list of business goals.

“Episode 111: The Business of Sex Ed with Cameron Glover”

In my first time talking directly to y’all since the national sweep of Black Lives Matter uprisings that started in Minneapolis, I need to lay the groundwork for this month’s energy reading: Fuck “Business as Usual,” a new world is entirely possible.

We are living through a global pandemic, but the police are still carrying on with their racist, violent practices. That is business as usual. We are trying to keep ourselves afloat in the midst of a rapid destabilization, but the stability we crave is not the old norm. The cards this month are meeting us on the edge of this knife. There is pain and anguish, and there is also incredible opportunity.

Whether the cards are speaking to us as individuals rushing to meet the blazing revolution, or addressing our work as individual business owners (hopefully, both), the messages are the same: Plant seeds and actively encourage their growth, tend your boundaries, stop stalling, and take a leap of faith.

The cards want us to remember that we are the drivers of our fate, and that nothing can change while we refuse to act. Action and change are scary when we are not sure about what lies on the other side. This is a time of waiting, but it is not a time for passivity. This month, the cards are calling us to actively engage the wait and ground ourselves in the face of great uncertainty.

This week, I am so pumped to introduce you to Alyssa Chang! I fully admit that I go a little overboard in my fandom here, but I think you’ll understand why once you listen to this episode.

Alyssa is a brain-based health and movement coach who works with clients on improving their connection between their brain and body, so they can heal their metabolism, rewire their mindset, and move pain free. She uses movement, lifestyle adjustments, and neuroscience to dramatically change how her clients relate to their bodies. Whoa. I have personally had a session with her and it exploded my mind!

In this episode, Alyssa explains why traditional ways of approaching fitness and wellness often fall short of addressing chronic issues. She explains how our nervous system works to protect us and how taking care of our nerves, managing our anxiety, and even stretching our eyeballs (no, I’m not kidding) can do way more for us than just muscle movement alone. She shows that brain-based science allows us to work with our bodies without shame or judgement, so every body can feel better.

We also talk about the cutting-edge approach that Alyssa is taking with her business: moving a tactile, traditionally “in-person” career online. Alyssa shares how coaching online allows her to empower her customers, rather than allowing them to be dependent on her for success. We discuss abundance mindset, when it comes to serving our clients, and the radical idea of working to make yourself obsolete.

What if failure weren’t an option? What if all outcomes were neutral? What if you got up off your sad butt and rode off into the sunset? No, June’s energy reading isn’t telling you to pick yourself up by your bootstraps, but it is telling us that we need to check our attitude.

Summer is said to be easy, but this month the cards are pushing us hard into introspection and accountability. Y’all, this is a reminder that humans are meaning-makers. That is our magic. It can be beautiful and rich, but it can also be limiting.

This month, the cards are asking us to take up the reins of our brains. What meaning are we giving to situations? Are these the stories we want to be living in? Are these the mindsets that allow us to live our dreams? How can we better love ourselves?

But it isn’t all down to us. We don’t live in a vacuum (even if sheltering in place might have made it feel that way); there are people ready to hold us. What if we stopped trying to have all the answers? Yes, even us bossy business owners who feel like we have to have it all together! What would it mean to hold the vision instead of doling out the solutions?

Meaning is what we make of it, and when we give ourselves permission to take accountability instead of control, we make space for magic.
