How these early efforts put pressure on the Lincoln Administration to make Emancipation a policy and how the United States Colored Troops were eventually raised and utilitized throughout the Department.

HTP EP 80: Connecting To History Through Music Vol. 3 “Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald” w/Producer Parker Russell Sep 30, 2024

It's time for another look at history through the lens of music! While not one of Matt's strong suits, Pat had brought in some backup with show producer Parker!
Parker gives the guys a dive into the development and performance of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. This classic folk rock story was developed very quickly following the tragic loss of the freighter in 1975 and was an instant classic. That doesn't mean that it was cast in stone however.
The many tweaks and changes that have been put into the song over the decades are also laid out by Parker. He makes it clear that this was not a cash grab by Mr. Lightfoot, but an ongoing saga that adapted as new and better research was developed. A fascinating way to keep up with the history of this wreck!
And at the conclusion of the episode is a first of its kind here on the podcast! Pat & Parker are joined by Jonathan Filson from Pat’s band Auld Mally, to deliver a very special THTP rendition of the song itself!

For the 162 commemoration of the Battle of Antietam Pat & Matt turned to friend of the show, Scott Hartwig, to discuss the second volume in his Maryland Campaign series. Following on the back of To Antietam Creek, Scott published last year, I Dread the Thought of the Place.
This massive tome goes into detail on the specific movements of the contending armies during the Battle of Antietam, as well as the personalities of the campaign. Scott discusses the motivations and objectives of both McClellan and Lee during the Campaign, as well as how he pulled all this material together.
Now Pat and Matt are Maryland Campaign guys, so they have lots of questions and benefit from Scott's insights. Join them and Scott Hartwig as the gang heads back to Antietam Creek!

The boys are back with another shipwreck and who better to talk shipwrecks with than the host of the Shipwrecks & Sea Dogs podcast, Rich Napolitano! Rich gives us a deep dive on one of the most famous shipwrecks in both history and pop culture, the Edmund Fitzgerald.
The Big Fitz was the pride of the Great Lakes, a massive ore hauler that did the run from Wisconsin down to Detroit, Michigan. This trip took tons upon tons of ore over the dangerous waters of the Great Lakes, particularly those of Lake Superior.
It was while on Superior on November 10, 1975 that the Edmund Fitzgerald was caught in an early winter storm and lost with all hands. The loss of the massive ship and it's crew sparked an extensive search as well as the famous song.

Heading into the summer, Pat and Matt are joined by Melissa Winn, the now former Director of Photography Research for HistoryNet. Melissa provides the guys with details on a man who is often overlooked by history and was overshadowed by his boss during the American Civil War, John A. Rawlins, aide-de-camp of Ulysses S. Grant himself.
Rawlins, a prewar friend of Grant's, was an influential lawyer and democrat in Galena, Illinois prior to the war. Upon the outbreak of hostilities he famously declared that, "there were no parties anymore" and that he would enlist to fight for the Union. In August 1861 Rawlins was asked to join Grant's staff and was promoted to Captain. In this position he looked after the General, keeping on him about his pledge of temperance and keeping away many who would distract or tempt Grant.
Join us as we learn more about this fascinating man, how he kept Grant on the straight and narrow and what happened to him as the war dragged on.

HTP EP 32: The Siege of Boston May 02, 2022

For our follow-up Quarter 2, Pat and Matt are joined once again by the Curator of the Concord Museum, David Wood. David took us through the coming of the Revolution at the beginning of the quarter and all the way through the fighting at Lexington & Concord. With the forces of King George III back in Boston, the colonial militias that had rallied against them had the garrison trapped. The Siege of Boston had begun.
This often overlooked aspect of the American Revolution, was the last major conflict in Massachusetts during the war and it happened right at the beginning! The Siege of Boston saw not only the loss of a major Crown foothold in the New England colonies, but also the rise of a new commander for colonial forces, George Washington. Unimpressed with the scattered, ragtag militia companies, Washington began the process of molding an army during an active military operation!
As with so many other sieges in history, the Siege of Boston was dirty, desperate and diseased. While both sides watched the lines waiting for reinforcements or relief, the day to day struggle just to stay alive soon became apparent. How long the forces of King George III could hold out waiting for reinforcements, was balanced against the transitory nature of the militias and the internal machinations of their commanders. Join Pat & Matt as they learn about this opening phase of the American Revolution.

HTP EP 31: The Shot Heard 'Round The World - The Battle of Lexington & Concord April 19, 1775 Apr 01, 2022

The Shot Heard 'Round the World! It's a phrase we've all heard, but what does it mean and what is it referring to? For this Season 3, Quarter 2 episode Pat and Matt have the pleasure of speaking to David Wood, the curator of the Concord Museum in Concord, Massachusetts about the spark that ignited the American Revolution, the Battle of Lexington and Concord, fought April 19, 1775!
Before we get to that fateful day however, the guys take a deep dive into the coming of the Revolution. What drove the colonies, particularly the New England colonies, to take up arms against Great Britain is a twisting tail and one that was not necessarily supposed to lead to independence. While tensions between the colonies and England had been on the rise for years, most colonists still considered themselves Englishmen and thus due the rights thereof. This mindset began to change however following the British raid out of Boston to capture stockpiled supplies. This first clash of the war set into motion things very few of the participants could have imagined, embarrassing an Empire and inspiring a loose confederation of colonies. You are not going to want to miss this!

HTP EP 20: One Fort/Three Wars Jul 01, 2021

The second half of Season 2 gets under way with a great conversation with our very good friend, Rob Ambrose. Rob is a Park Ranger who wears many different hats for Fort Frederick State Park, which is the site of the French and Indian War era stone fortification known as Fort Frederick. About 20 miles west of Hagerstown, Maryland and just a mile off of the Rt. 70 exit at Big Pool & Indian Springs, is the location of one of the coolest historical sites you likely never have heard of... well... WE ARE ABOUT TO CHANGE ALL THAT!
Rob was gracious enough to bring to podcast life his living history program that he puts on annually known as "One Fort, Three Wars." Built by the English during the mid 1750s, Rob takes us through the old stone forts history and its experience as "edge of the world," fort through the French and Indian war, its use as a prison (think Andersonville from the American Civil War) during the American Revolution, and as a place for Federal soldiers to loosely use and harass Confederate troops and cavalry across the Potomac River on and off during the American Civil War!

In episode 03 we are joined by our good friend and amateur RMS Titanic historian Parker Russell, to help us tell the incredible, innovative, and tragic story about perhaps the most famous passenger ocean liner company ever to sail on the seas!
In our Quarter 3 epic, we follow the White Star Line from their humble beginnings as a pack trading company in the mid 1840s, all the way until the end of their run in 1949!
This episode was a monster to produce and a monster to record, you can tell by our exhaustion by the end of the episode as we wrapped recording close to 1:00 a.m.! However, as we state early in this episode, everyone seems to go through a "Titanic phase," and building this episode certainly helped reconnect us with that phase in our life!
For those of you tuning in for RMS Titanic specific content... it is there lol! But just a heads up that this episode covers the history of the whole company and we will be getting into the minutia, opinions, and theories about the most famous shipwreck in history in a more in-depth way during the follow-up!
