Newsweek is reporting that the United Nations investigation of developed countries around the world finds that poverty in the United States is now so widespread and severe, with over 40 million Americans below the poverty level and many of them living without basic sanitation or enough food and without any access to healthcare, that large parts of America are functionally as bad as or worse than many Third World countries.

Republican policies and 40 years of Reaganomics have turned America into a “sh*thole country.” Americans know this, and the vast majority of them think that wages should be increased, healthcare should be expanded, education should be free, and the federal government should undo Reagan and Clinton’s destruction of LBJ‘s safety net.

Bill Barr has hoodwinked the media with his tweet that appears to defend judicial independence- but this is another hoax from the Coverup King. And -- these are the tricks by which democracy is transformed into fascism. Trump has no respect for tradition and is scornful of values, so he has little stopping him from grabbing more and more power.

Now Trump is holding the State of New York hostage for investigating the Trump Crime Family by blocking the Trusted Travel program -- so essentially extorting the people of New York by withholding a federal service.... Extortion is a form of bribery, an impeachable crime specifically mentioned in the constitution.

After all this, what will we have to do to rebuild our democratic institutions and traditions when Trump is finally gone?

Plus, economist Richard Wolff joins Thom for another look at the state of the American economic system and the people within in.

Donald Trump has officially ended one of the most important parts of the American experiment by demanding that an independent Department of Justice go easy on one of his buddies. By taking on the judicial powers of convicting and sentencing, Trump has turned our “system of laws, not men“ on its head. This is the sort of thing you see in Erdogan’s Turkey, but never in an advanced democracy. Bill Barr and Donald Trump have committed a complete repudiation of one of the most important of the values and structures that made this country a democratic republic. Four brave federal prosecutors have stood up to this and resigned, but if there is not an overwhelming and systematic response to Trump’s subversion of the American justice system, our republic is at an end. November may be too late.
