    Show notes

Lyle and Meghan continue the Xennial Countdown to Halloween with LVCRFT — Evan “Kidd” Bogart, Amanda “MNDR” Warner, and Peter Wade — and Special Guest Katharine Isabelle. Together, they head back into the Halloween world they grew up with and explore some of the sounds and spooky pop culture that helped make the season what it was for a generation of Xennials.

They also dive into LVCRFT’s eighth album, Skeleton Sam’s Deadtime Stories, featuring an incredible collection of familiar faces and voices from the horror world, including Katharine on “Sweet Kristine.” It’s a conversation about growing up with Halloween, creating for it now, and how the things being made today might become the Halloween nostalgia of future generations.

Leigh Haggerwood Spooky Sounds Composer Interview Oct 05, 2026
    Show notes

Lyle and Meghan welcome British composer and sound designer Leigh Haggerwood to The Halloween Podcast to explore something we hear every October but rarely stop to think about: the sounds that make Halloween spooky. Leigh has spent decades working professionally in music and sound, with credits across British television, live productions, commercials, and sound design, while also creating Halloween and horror soundscapes heard by listeners around the world.

From childhood trick-or-treating in London to creating imaginary haunted worlds entirely through sound, Leigh joins us for a fascinating conversation about the language of spooky audio, Britain’s centuries-old tradition of ghosts and folklore, reputedly haunted places, and how Halloween sound effects have evolved from physical records, cassettes, and CDs into the digital age.

Under The Umbrella Tree Halloween Special (1991) Oct 04, 2026
    Show notes

Under the Umbrella Tree was a cozy fixture of Meghan’s childhood Disney Channel viewing, but this Canadian children’s favorite is completely new to Lyle. For the Xennial Countdown, they revisit Holly, Iggy, Gloria and Jacob—and the wonderfully simple Halloween special that brought the holiday into their already delightfully unusual household.

From costumes and trick-or-treating to a little practical Halloween safety and some wonderfully witchy fun, this is the kind of seasonal television that could make an already-beloved childhood show feel even more special. Meghan revisits a Halloween memory she hasn’t forgotten, while Lyle discovers what made this little corner of early ’90s television so memorable.

    Witches Night Out (1978) Oct 03, 2026
    Show notes

Witch’s Night Out is one of Meghan’s beloved childhood Halloween specials — a wonderfully weird Canadian cartoon from 1978 featuring Gilda Radner as an eccentric Witch who can make a couple of kids’ Halloween dreams come spectacularly true. Meghan still watches it every year and is now introducing it to her own children.

Lyle, however, had somehow never seen it. So Meghan takes him to Anytown for the first time to talk about the distinctive animation, that unforgettable opening song, a surprisingly recognizable voice cast, and why this peculiar little special has remained part of her Halloween for so many years. Will its weirdness win Lyle over without the childhood nostalgia? Well... that may be another story.

Wonderful Sausage By Alvin Schwartz Explained (CONTENT WARNING) Oct 01, 2026
    Show notes

CONTENT WARNING: This episode discusses murder, cannibalism, and harm to children and animals. Parental discretion is advised before listening with children.

Today, Meghan and Lyle sink their teeth into “Wonderful Sausage,” a particularly gruesome tale collected by Alvin Schwartz in Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones (1991), with unforgettable illustrations by Stephen Gammell.

What makes Samuel Blunt’s sausages so wonderfully delicious? You might wish you hadn’t asked! Lyle also traces the story’s folkloric roots to the Ozarks and Louisiana as we explore where this deliciously disturbing tale came from.

Jason Marsden Interview (Eerie Indiana, Hocus Pocus) Sep 29, 2026
    Show notes

Jason Marsden joins us for today’s Xennial Countdown to Halloween! You know Jason from an incredible list of films and television shows, including A Goofy Movie, Eerie, Indiana, and very importantly around here Hocus Pocus.

We had an absolute blast talking with Jason, who is genuinely one of the nicest guys you could hope to meet. We get into some of those Xennial favorites, spend plenty of time talking Hocus Pocus and Eerie, Indiana, and hear a few stories along the way — but we’re not spoiling those here. You’ll have to listen!

    Eerie Indiana Memories (1991) Sep 28, 2026
    Show notes

Today on the Xennial Countdown to Halloween, Meghan and Lyle are heading to one of the strangest little towns of the early 1990s: Eerie, Indiana. Premiering on NBC in 1991, the series followed 13-year-old Marshall Teller as he tried to document the increasingly bizarre things happening around him in a place where almost everyone else seemed perfectly happy to accept the weirdness as normal.

Meghan remembers watching Eerie, Indiana as a kid—most likely during its later run on The Disney Channel—but remembers surprisingly little about it, so she and Lyle revisit what made this short-lived series so unusual. They look at its place just ahead of the huge 1990s kid-horror boom, its distinctly Xennial world, and the surprising amount of social satire hiding beneath all that small-town weirdness.

Buttons and Rusty in Which Witch Is Which (1984) Sep 27, 2026
    Show notes

Buttons and Rusty are heading into Halloween for the first time, and the young bear and fox quickly discover that humans have some very strange October traditions.

Meghan revisits a childhood favorite filled with trick-or-treating, witches, a pair of criminals, and one ridiculously catchy title song. And given her mild childhood obsession with “woodland animals” — something friends and family can readily attest to — putting a bear and a fox into a Halloween special was really stacking the deck. Meanwhile, Lyle experiences Which Witch Is Which? for the first time.
