The Gratitudeology™ Podcast with Jamie Hess

When Jamie Hess almost died, she woke up.

As the daughter of legendary broadcast journalist Joan Lunden, it seemed from the outside that Jamie had everything… so why did she feel so empty inside?

She pondered that question as she fell into a life of drug addiction, and when she hit her bottom, it hit her: nothing feels good until we get grateful… but we often don’t feel grateful until we have a wake-up call.

Each week, we tell stories of turning pain to purpose… shared by some of the most inspirational people on the planet.

Because an attitude of gratitude is the heartbeat of happiness… let's get there together.

Jessie Buttafuoco | My Mother Was Shot in the Head; The Crime That Came to Define My Family Will Not Define My Life Feb 03, 2025
    Show notes

Imagine you’re 9 years old, living your best life. You have what feels like the perfect family. You live in the suburbs. You go to dance classes for fun. Everything is… perfect.

And then… BOOM. A horrific crime throws your family into the center of the biggest true crime saga the nation has ever seen. You go from relative anonymity to having dozens of news stations camped out on your front lawn… all while your parents are nowhere to be seen…

Because one is in the hospital, fighting for her life…

and the other is under suspicion for attempted murder.

This was the life of Jessie Buttafuoco, the daughter of Joey and Mary Jo Buttafuoco… the latter of whom was shot in the face at point blank range by Joey’s underage mistress, Amy Fisher.

Amy would come to be known as “the Long Island Lolita,” and the case would gain global attention. Drew Barrymore and Alyssa Milano would play her in subsequent made-for-TV movies.

    It was all… a lot.

And so much of it focused on the wrong person: the perpetrator.

Jessie’s story is one of taking the narrative back, working to see life through a new lens, and helping the public do the same.

She’s appeared on Dr. Oz (2018), was featured in a 2-hour ABC 2020 special titled “Growing up Buttafuoco” (2019), and was a featured speaker on behalf of ABC News for CrimeCon House Arrest. In 2021, she appeared on The Doctors, talking about the mental and emotional effects of her childhood experiences.

Today, she is focused on helping to change the narrative around true crime in the media, and the way victims are portrayed, exploited, and often re-victimized. Our conversation on today’s show sheds a new light on her life, her recovery from addiction, and her plans for the future.

Tune in for a major dose of inspo from a bright light who didn’t let the darkness dim her sparkle.

What if you got everything you thought you always wanted… then lost it all? How would you move forward? Would you live in regret? Depression? Victim mentality? Or would you find that maybe, just maybe, it would spur you to find the TRUE key to happiness in learning to let go, pivot, and reprioritize your life?

This is exactly what happened to Ryan Dusick, founding drummer from Maroon 5.

Multiple hit songs, two Grammy awards, and 20 million albums sold later, Ryan found himself suffering and without direction, when his career as a performer came to an end, just as it was taking off.

After years of struggling with physical and mental health challenges, Ryan finally turned a corner in 2016, when he began his journey of recovery, culminating in a new life path full of meaning, purpose and fulfillment.

Curious about what he’s up to today? We sat with him on the heels of releasing his book, “Harder to Breathe: A Memoir of Making Maroon 5, Losing It All, and Finding Recovery” to hear more about his journey from aspiring pop star to global superstar to heartbroken alcoholic to thriving mental health survivor and messenger of hope, recovery, and a new take on GRATITUDE.

[14:13] Ryan briefly talks about Maroon 5’s history: its original name, getting its first record deal, and almost breaking up.

[18:13] Ryan discusses the artists and music genres that inspired Maroon 5’s unique style and impacted its future success.

[24:07] Ryan talks about the road to fame and the realities of touring.

[27:05] Ryan opens up about his battle with alcoholism and what led to him eventually leaving the band.

[35:08] Ryan discusses downwards spiral after leaving the band and reckoning with his identity.

[40:11] Ryan talks about the turning point of his addiction and finally committing to changing his life.

[45:24] Ryan reflects on his privilege during rehab in which he credits his successful recovery to.

[49:55] Ryan explains how pursuing higher education was another level of his recovery and how it led him to dedicate himself to helping others.

Do you ever look around and think: how does everyone else seem so happy? If this thought hits you now more than usual, you’re not alone. Did you know that - on average - upwards of 30% of adults in the US report to the American Psychiatric Association that their stress levels significantly increase during the holidays? And 55% of us report experiencing loneliness throughout the season.

Stella Grizont, named a leading happiness expert by Time Magazine, is a speaker and executive coach who helps leaders achieve career fulfillment and organizations enhance employee well-being. Some of Stella's corporate clients include Google, Johnson & Johnson, VMWare, and Genentech. It took a recession, being laid off, and ending an engagement for Stella to hit rock bottom—but in that challenging time (when many would give up) she managed to find her light and start anew… and it inspired her to help the rest of us do the same.

Many of our former guests have dealt with life’s issues and emotional struggles - things like losing a loved one, fighting social anxiety, battling overwhelm and fatigue, or even something simple-but-debilitating life stage fright.

We’ll take a “walk down memory lane,” listening to clips from some of our favorite past episodes from guests like:

    • Fitness and Broadway star, and co-host of The Talk, Amanda Kloots
    • Motivational speaker and joy after grief advocate, Jessica Janzen
    • Founder of The Big Quiet, Jesse Isreal
    • Drybar founder, Alli Webb
    • Olympic silver medalist, Kim Glass
    • Workplace expert and Grant Cardone partner, Natalie Dawson.

Joette discusses how homeopathy isn’t just for physical ailments.. but for mental and emotional well-being as well. She delves into the homeopathic approach to addressing issues like grief, stress, and anxiety, offering insightful guidance and practical remedies that can help listeners on their healing journeys.

With a heartfelt belief in the power of mothers and grandmothers to lead home-based healthcare, Joette offers a roadmap for health autonomy and natural wellness. This episode is an inspiring testament to the healing potential of listening to your body and seeking alternatives when the conventional path isn’t enough.

Anneke Beerten is a mountain biking powerhouse. At just 14, she made her childhood dream a reality by going pro and winning World Championships in BMX and 4-Cross. With sponsorships from top brands like GoPro, Oakley, and - our sponsor for today’s episode, Boiron - Anneke’s journey has been nothing short of legendary from the very start.

Growing up in the Netherlands, Anneke was fearless, racing around BMX tracks while her other friends her age were just ditching their training wheels.

Today’s episode brings us into the life and mindset of this top athlete, who beat the odds time and time again to remain a champion. From her commitment to wellness, which began as a child when her parents instilled a deep appreciation for homeopathic remedies for those gnarly cycling bruises (thanks Boiron!) – to the optimized mindset she coaches into other athletes today, her path to the top is largely underscored by the idea of turning pain into purpose

Danny Seo | The Green Guru Loved by Drew Barrymore, Kerry Washington, and Oprah (Just Don’t Call Him Martha Stewart!) Nov 11, 2024
    Show notes

Danny Seo was just 19 years old when the Washington Post wrote an article about him, rhetorically asking their readership: “Is this the next Martha Stewart?” At the time, the comparison felt lofty and overwhelming to Danny… but the reality is, over the past twenty years, Danny has created a new space all his own as a sustainable style expert and eco-living consultant for celebrities and major national media outlets.

Basically, he was green before green was cool. In fact, he was so ahead of the curve that he was literally BORN on Earth Day. (no, seriously!)

What many don’t know is just how committed Danny really is to the cause… he was so called to help the planet that he chose it over finishing his formal education, dropping out of High School to instead lobby for environmental issues as a teenager.

While it may have seemed a risky strategy at the time – especially back in the 90s, before saving the environment was such a big topic – eventually, it paid off.

From landing on Oprah’s couch at just 19 to collaborating with A-list celebrities, such as Drew Barrymore and Kerry Washington, Danny reveals how he turned his love for the Earth into a vibrant career dedicated to making the world a greener, better place.

We’ll also hear about his decade+ love for Boiron, the French Homeopathic company who makes many of the products you may already use in your own home.

Danny shares insider secrets from his recent star-packed trip to Boiron’s French HQ, and why aligning with brands who you believe in is so important in today’s world.

Danny is smart and successful, humble and hilarious… so come along as he spills his secrets to making it BIG in business by doing things on your own terms, and remaining authentic and aligned with your belief systems.
