Atiyah McDaniels dropped out of college three times. The first time, she went for fashion designing. The second time, she went for business. The third time, she went for communications. It just wasn’t for her.

Literally 2 months after dropping out the last time, she had already started her hair business. People would always ask her where she would get her hair extensions from and thought that people should definitely pay her for it.

She set herself apart by creating a professional, upscale and chic brand right from the beginning. She used her sales skills to bring in revenue and by the end of the first year, she grew over 6 figures.

She’s not only in the hair business, but she’s also mentoring young entrepreneurs on how to start and grow their business.

The Glam Kitchen is an online food blog inspiring millennials to be more comfortable in the kitchen. If you already follow Shauntay, you know her food is mouth-watering! It’s been a labor of love for Shauntay, and she’s grown it to over 71k followers on Instagram and has even catered for celebrities like Jess Hilarious.

Shaunte has always loved cooking and creating meals for her friends and family, but she never really thought that she could grow her brand into what it is today. Shaunte’s story is so interesting because Food Entrepreneurship is quite new, and just starting to take off.

I'm sure you've heard the saying "You're the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with" by John Rahn. But how important is our community when it comes to being successful? I wanted to investigate how true this really was.

I looked at some research being done, and I found out that community and your environment play a huge role in how successful you are.

In a study done by the New England Journal of Medicine on obesity and social networks, researchers found that a person had a 57% chance of being obese if a close was obese. This shows just how much influence those around us have on who we become as people. But it's not only about our bodies.

The reality is that we spend our time and energy, which shape our subconscious mind, exposes us to new ways of thinking, and show us what's possible or not. We may even pick up new habits. So it's so important to make sure the people around us are bringing us closer to success and not further away from it.

I'm a big believer that we need people in our inner circle to support, challenge, and inspire us to do better, and that’s what we’re talking about in this live episode.

Ep 107. [REWIND] How to walk away from a career that isn’t right for you, with 7-figure sales coach Jasmine Green Apr 06, 2021

This week we are taking it back to one of my favorite episodes with business coach Jasmine Green.

A huge part of Jasmine's story is that she gave up an opportunity to go to Medical School. She realized it just wasn’t right for her. Just as quickly as Jasmine made that decision, she went from a path of financial and professional security as a doctor to starting over from scratch.

Jasmine went through a turbulent time trying to figure out what she was meant to do. She quickly got caught up in a bunch of dead-end jobs, just trying to survive. Jasmine had no sense of direction, identity, and was completely lost and alone.

She hit her rock bottom when she ended a relationship and had to up move back home with all of her belongings. For most people, this would have been enough to put aside any vision of a successful future, but Jasmine always knew that she was meant for more. So she put a plan in place to live the life she knew she deserved.

Jasmine’s story is so incredibly impactful because no matter what circumstances she was in, she never wavered from doing the work it takes to figure out one's purpose. She had so many career pivots before she got to where she is today.

Now, Jasmine is working as a successful 7-figure sales coach helping business owners reach multiple six figures. Her purpose is to help her clients become who they need to be to in order to earn the results they desire.

The best part of it all is, Jasmine no longer has to continue to seek and search for clients, opportunities, or income - they all come to her.

Ep 102. How to create your own real estate business with Kharmika Alston of Live Love Durham Mar 02, 2021

In this episode, we’re talking to Kharmika Alston, a Former US diplomat who made a major career pivot into Real Estate.

Kharmika is the founder of Live, Love Durham, a real estate brokerage which believes in transforming our community and creating new cycles of generational wealth.

Before she made the Pivot, Kharmika’s job was working as a US diplomat across the world, including Mexico and Amsterdam. Of course, as a Young Black Woman in this field, there were plenty of difficulties dealing with being treated a certain way within the organization, and promoting policies that she didn’t necessarily agree with.

Right before her last appointment, she realized she couldn’t do it anymore. So she packed her bags, moved back to North Carolina, and began to figure out her next step.

She’s always wanted to invest and get serious about wealth generation, and she realized that housing prices in Durham NC were increasing. She wanted something that would give her the entrepreneurial aspect while being able to invest and help build generational wealth within her community.

It wasn’t easy. It was a lot of work, but she made it happen. You’ll hear Kharmika give the details on how to make it happen for yourself.

Super excited for this episode because it’s with one of my best friends, Shonitria Anthony. Shonitria is the founder of the Blunt Blowin’ Mama brand. It’s a podcast, clothing company, and movement for moms who smoke weed, and one of the few Black Woman-Owned brands in the weedpreneur industry.

What I love about Shonitria’s brand is that she dispels a lot of the myths around smoking weed during a pregnancy (and how that doesn’t make you a bad mom).

Through all the hard work, frustration, wins, and losses, I always tried to maintain some sort of work-life balance. That was a struggle. Why? Because we’re so used to being overworked!

We had the opportunity to speak with our brand Jakiya Brown Thiaw, founder of The Travelingfro in this episode. Jakiya helped us with The Goal Standard brand, and we love sharing people we know who are amazing at what they do.

We talked to Jakiya about her incredible story, from growing up in North Carolina, to moving to NYC for her dream job at one of the biggest beauty brands in the world. Even at the points where most stories end, (dream job in the big city), Jakiya’s was just beginning.

Dawn was working her dream job at Sony Music when she fell ill with MS. Throughout her journey of coming to terms with the illness, She started creating products that would help her adopt a healthier lifestyle.

Taylor grew up surrounded by entrepreneurs, including both of her parents. She knew she wanted to work in business, so she applied and was accepted to The Whaton School, an Ivy League business school in Pennsylvania. I recently quit my job and became a full-time entrepreneur! As exciting as it is, I feel super blessed to have the support of my partner. When I first told him that I planned on quitting my job, he was shocked because for him, The Goal Standard was just a hobby and something I did for fulfillment! But it didn’t take long before it was fully on-board, and I’m super happy to have him as a support system throughout this entire journey.

A lot of us are looking forward to full-time entrepreneurship, and having the ‘talk’ with your partner about your dreams is one of the first steps that we should take. Having a supportive partner as a creative or a dreamer is super important, and they honestly don’t get enough credit! That’s why I’m shining a light on their contribution to our success. We’re talking about what it’s like to be the one with the steady income and having to be the backbone and support for a creative who’s forging a new path.

What do you do when society has expectations on what your life and career should be, but you don’t feel the same way? - Do what works for you!

That’s exactly what Jasmine Green did when she gave up an opportunity to go to Medical School. She realized it just wasn’t right for her. Just as quickly as Jasmine made that decision, she went from a path of financial and professional security as a doctor to starting over from scratch.

Jasmine went through a turbulent time trying to figure out what she was meant to do. She quickly got caught up in a bunch of dead-end jobs, just trying to survive. Jasmine had no sense of direction, identity, and was completely lost and alone.

She hit her rock bottom when she ended a relationship and had to up move back home with all of her belongings. Originally from Bermuda, Makaela moved to the UK at 18 to pursue her college degree. If you don’t know, London is expensive, and as a student, it’s even worse! Makaela couldn’t find any program that would provide school supplies and living expenses at an affordable price, so she decided to create it herself!

Makaela started her college subscription service with zero funding and within its first year, Free The Fresher had acquired over 30,000 members. Now, at just 24, Makaela’s business has processed over $2 million in revenue (in 2019).

The best part about her story is that The start of Free The Fresher was all self-funded.

Makaela’s journey hasn’t been perfect but it’s certainly been worth it.

This week we’re talking to Khadijah Polly about how she took one of the simplest ideas - Kettle Corn and grew it into a booming business.

Khadijah always had entrepreneurship blood, and she always had a business idea that she was working on. Not long after getting laid off, Khadijah used a skydiving trip as the motivation she needed to go all in her most recent business idea. She started making popcorn at home and selling it to office employees as the go-to afternoon snack. It didn't take long before Kay's Kettle Corn took off, and Khadijah started doing events, servicing colleges, and even created a popcorn subscription business.

One of the things I love about Khadijah’s story is how she was able to infuse all of her interests and skills that she learned during here 9 to 5 years into this business. After returning back home to New York, Sienna realized she wanted more. Life was good, but she felt like there was something missing. So she put a plan together to make her move to Spain permanent.

Sienna applied for a program that allowed her to teach English in Spain. Six years letter, she's working in her dream role as a communications manager and has grown LMDES into a movement and a business on teaching women of color how to move abroad.

LMDES host retreats, provide an online course on moving abroad and manages a community of women who support each other on the journey moving abroad.

Sienna’s story is amazing because she’s literally making her own path, but at the same time creating a lane for others behind her. That’s what it’s about!

Hit that 10k follower count on IG (yes it matters)⁣

Grown my podcast downloads to over 20k. ⁣

In this episode, we’re talking to Christina Duren, founder of Beautiful Brown girls, who talks about leaving a full scholarship to pursue her dream of moving to New York. Christina ended up working at Def Jam, which gave her an opportunity to flex her PR muscles.

Christina ended up getting pregnant and moving back to Miami, but couldn’t really find her tribe. At first, creating Beautiful Brown girls was a way for her to fellowship and find a community that she could connect with. Her first meetup was a brunch with a total of 15 ladies. Now, it's a global network of 23 chapters with 38,000 members!

The community includes entrepreneurs, corporate executives, college deans, and so many other black women from different backgrounds.

In the beginning, they were not making any money. In fact, Christina was paying for all of this from her full time job. It took about 5 years (including one year of burnout) before they actually made money. Now that’s commitment.

I got so much amazing feedback about The Glow Up Summit! What a lot of people don’t know is that I was completely unproductive after the launch. I was wiped out! Launching is exhausting, and when you’re not fully prepared for all of the marketing that needs to be done, it’s even worse. Lesson learned.

The next time I launch you better believe I’ll spend just as much time creating and automating my marketing strategy as I will curating the actual product. Systems and automation are two of my best friends now!

Today we’re talking to best-selling author, motivational speaker Gayneté Jones, a Bermudian who is also charting her own path. This episode is extra special to me because I get to share more stories of another successful Bermudian Woman! It's really amazing to put my country on the map in ways that haven't been done before.

Gayneté started taking part in international experiences when she was in her teens. While living in Venezuela, she was held hostage by police officers, and it was at this point that she realized that nothing is guaranteed.

After moving back to Bermuda, she enrolled in a college program but ended up getting pregnant. Even though she was technically a teen mom at 19, she didn’t let statistics define what she could or couldn’t be. Most people write you off in terms of what you’ll be able to achieve after having a baby so young, but Gayneté wasn’t having that

She eventually found the start of what would be her passion and began writing her first book. Then, tragedy struck.

After finding herself at over 230 pounds, Tameika decided to start her weight loss journey where she lost 90 pounds in 9 months. This would eventually lead her to create a business that allows her to help others create the same life changes for themselves through online fitness coaching and her wellness retreats.

Her journey is quite unique, but it really shows that no matter what situation you’re in, if you’re determined and intentional about your goals, you can accomplish them. As black women, sometimes it feels like we don’t get the support or recognition, resources, or love we deserve. I want to make sure that I’m creating a space for us and providing things that help us to feel confident, supported, energized, and anything else we need to succeed in our business and career. That’s exactly why I started The Glow Up Podcast. In this episode, I talk about my personal journey as a black woman navigating through life, how the podcast aligns with my purpose, and what I did to figure all of this out.

One of the best parts of the episode is that I talk about exactly what I did to find my purpose.

I’ve been actively trying to seek it out for so long and it’s been in front of my face! It was not easy. Actually, for me, it was really, really hard.

Here are some of the things I did:

I thought about what gets me excited. What can I do or talk about that gets me excited? Don’t think about how you can make money from it right away
I thought about some of the things I hate doing
I tried doing a lot of different things to see what I liked
Based on the things that I like, I talked to people that are already doing what I like to see what my life could be like in 10 to 20 years. If the answer is yes, bingo. If the answer is no, it’s back to the drawing board
I was open to receive whatever it was that was supposed to come to me, even if I didn’t like it
I talked to my close friends and family about what they thought I was good or not good at

One thing that I love about Tonya is that she creates resources and content based on what she’s learned. She started My fab finance after she had issues with money herself, without having a background in finance. She’s a testament for anyone who thinks they can’t do something they don’t have experience in.

Ep 12. Quit making excuses - with Jasmine Johnson Dec 19, 2018

Have you ever had a situation happen to you that you didn’t think you could bounce back from? That’s what Jasmine Johnson had when she found out she was pregnant right before she went to med school. She talks about how she had to get over the “shame” and opinion of others to accomplish what she thought at one point was impossible. If she can go to med school with a family, you have no excuse!

Now she’s a doctor specializing high risk pregnancies and we had a great conversation around her story, how she made it by staying focused and relying on her support system. But my favorite part of the episode was discussing why black women are the most high risks for death during pregnancy. She breaks it down for me why that’s happening and how her role is to change this.

The combination of being a Morehouse School of Medicine graduate, being raised in Alabama, and still holding strong to her Nigerian roots has cultivated her passion for working in typically underserved populations with compassion and grace. She learned from an early age that not all individuals are afforded the benefits that we all tend to take for granted.

At the age of 31, she finally fulfilled one of her lifelong dreams of being a physician. Despite, the polished way it comes across, she maneuvered through obstacles (academic and personal) that might have halted others along this same path. However, with Vivian’s ability to rely on her faith in Jesus Christ and the overwhelming support of her family and friends, she crossed the finish line in May 2018. Vivian understands the importance of being transparent with others who also aspire to become physicians in order to change the narrative that is medicine.
