    The Gist

The Gist is a pop culture podcast and celebrity interview series where yesterday’s icons and today’s headlines collide.

Hosted by writer and cultural commentator Chris Vetrano, each episode goes beyond surface-level entertainment news to explore the stories behind the moments that shaped us — from 90s and 2000s pop music nostalgia to reality TV, Real Housewives drama, and the celebrities redefining pop culture right now.

Expect unfiltered conversations, thoughtful deep dives, and smart breakdowns of the biggest headlines in entertainment, plus interviews with the artists, actors, and reality stars who defined a generation. Guests have included Willa Ford, Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees, Wells Adams, Lindsay Ell, Leva Bonaparte of Southern Charm, David Archuleta, Cassadee Pope, and more.

If you grew up on TRL, reality TV reunions, and dancing in your bedroom to “zig-a-zig ahh,” this pop culture podcast is for you.

New episodes drop on Tuesdays everywhere you listen. Now available in video on Spotify and YouTube.

Clay Aiken on New Music, Fatherhood, and Not Caring Anymore Jul 28, 2026
    Show notes

Clay Aiken spent eighteen years raising his son instead of chasing another album, and he'll tell you that wasn't a mistake. Now that his son Parker is nearly off to college, the American Idol season two runner-up is back with his first new single since 2007, Rewind, and a lot less patience for pretending.

On this episode of The Gist, Chris Vetrano sits down with Clay Aiken to talk about what actually pulled him back into music, from a surprise reunion tour with Ruben Studdard to the phone call he made the moment he first heard Rewind. They get into how American Idol has changed since the show's early, unscripted seasons, why today's contestants show up with managers and pre-built personas, and what it means to finally stop worrying about how he looks or sounds. Clay also opens up about being one of the last public figures forced to come out on a magazine cover, and why he thinks that culture has changed for the better.

New episode of The Gist, out now. Listen and follow at listenitsvetrano.com or at @listenitsvetrano on Instagram.

Kris Allen Reflects on American Idol, the Gap Years, and Pole Vaulter Jun 16, 2026
    Show notes

Kris Allen won American Idol in 2009 and spent the next fifteen years doing the opposite of what that's supposed to look like. He walked away from his major label deal, started his own independent label DogBear Records, and took eight years between albums to make sure the next one was actually worth putting out.

In this conversation, recorded here in Nashville, Kris talks about what the "gap years" between Letting You In and Pole Vaulter were really about — the family decisions, the creative struggle, the COVID slowdown that made him finally sit still long enough to write something real. We get into the "Heartless" moment on American Idol, what it felt like to know he had a chance at winning, and why he still considers "Live Like We're Dying" something like a karaoke song he happens to own. Kris also opens up about the addiction themes woven into Pole Vaulter, why he guards his private life more carefully than almost anything else, and what he's building next.

Kris Allen is an American Idol winner, independent artist, and Nashville-based musician. Pole Vaulter is available now wherever you stream music. Follow me at @listenitsvetrano on Instagram and find The Gist wherever you listen to podcasts.

Kristen Doute on Motherhood, The Valley, and Owning the Crazy May 26, 2026
    Show notes

Kristen Doute has been called a villain, a truth teller, and a chaos agent. These days, she's adding "new mom" to the list and she's more self-aware than ever. On this episode of The Gist, Kristen opens up about filming The Valley Season 3 with a three-month-old, what she wishes audiences understood about her fiancé Luke's first-year-of-parenthood experience, and why watching herself on camera has always been her biggest tool for growth.

We talk about the shift from Vanderpump Rules to The Valley and why The Valley fills a space in Bravo's lineup that no other show does. Kristen shares where things really stand with Janet, why she's giving Jax Taylor grace while being honest about the last five years, and why "hilariously chaotic" is the only way to describe what's still coming this season.

Plus: what she'd say to Season 1 Vanderpump Kristen, her clothing line James Mae, a new YouTube project she's been keeping close to the vest, and the one word that sums up her life right now.

Kristen Doute. The Valley. Bravo. Vanderpump Rules. Jax Taylor. Janet. Postpartum. New mom. Reality TV. Pop culture podcast.
